I am a beekeeper and I found the live bee packages conversation hilarious. For more context, a lot of the live bee boxes actually contain queen bees inside cages that have attendant bees free in the box taking care of them. They are packed in special boxes to keep ventilation as well as can only really be shipped with USPS! I wouldn't be able to do my job without the postal service being shipping heros!

I asked him if by any chance he was related, turns out the guy was his uncle. He was born a few months after his uncle died in the accident and was named after him in his honor. He had no idea that his family member was well known! I showed him the Wikipedia page and the youtube videos surrounding the demon core and he was totally blown away. Re: the issue of pumping 700’ verticle. The best way to move that amount of fluid vertically that isn’t naturally under pressure is to build multiple pump stations. Each of these pump stations would have their own reservoir that they pull from that is filled by a pump further down the in the mine. This will allow the discharge pressure of the pump to only be affected by a fraction of the pressure that would be needed for 700’ in one pump.

I was driving past a kiwifruit orchard last year and they must have been pollinating the vines because there were heaps of bees in the air. Anyway, one flew in the car's open window before I thought to close it, smacked me in the forehead, and landed on the small patch of seat right between my legs. I was going swimming so was unfortunately also in commando mode, and a determined bee could have definitely found an opening in my defenses. There was nowhere to pull over but luckily I was only about 500m from where I was headed, so I just edged back in the seat as far as possible and rode it out.

Fun fact. I have a friend who is a bee keeper in Georgia. He ships his bees to California every year to pollinate their crops. And then they travel back. This is all via trucks. And transporting them is becoming expensive due to gas prices. So it makes the food cost more too.

Funnily enough I opened this while designing my first attempt at a laser cut kit. All I'll say is that I want to make weaving more accessible. Water pressure is actually not dependent on cross section of the tube holding the water. It's only F = rho*g*h. It's only dependent on the height of the water column! Edit: The pressure will depend on the cross section of where the water is pressing, but the force which the column presses with is density of water * gravitational constant * height of the water column

I'm an Australian invertebrate and reptile breeder whom specialises in huntsman spiders and I have to deal with the debate about posting live invertebrates a lot. Shipping most things are fine as auspost pretends bugs aren’t animals so they all get let through and even on cargo planes. I’ve sent numerous colonies of bull ants which are excellent escape artists & have quite a nasty sting as well as highly venomous spiders (funnel web spiders and redback spiders). These do have to be sent via express post but otherwise there’s no requirements. There used to be a sticker stating live invertebrates but that got phased out quite a while ago. I have had packages go missing in post (auspost code for stolen) which I just hope got opened to the complete dismay to the package thief - just like a glitter bomb just without the glitter or the bomb. Purchasing live food (cockroaches and crickets) for spiders in Australia has quite a high demand and there’s one business who basically owns the market. They send feeder crickets and blowflies in quantities exceeding 10 000 in cardboard poster tubes via express auspost. Now, cardboard works well for the crickets and flies which don’t chew the cardboard though Cockroaches on the other hand, do. This live food business decided one day that they were going to sell feeder cockroaches which are common for live food but just hadn’t been done by the aforementioned business. They didn’t change packaging technique from crickets and on one fateful Monday shipped out roughly 200 orders including the cockroaches. Once these orders went throughout Australia, they ended up at the regional post offices which the cockroaches promptly ate away the cardboard and ran rampant in these poor post offices. Now, each order for roaches wasn’t a measly 40 like pet shops but around 5000 spread over a few poster tubes so an escape isn’t taken well by minimum wage postal employees. Surprisingly, nothing happened to ausposts policies and they didn’t punish the live food business but its just a funny story told around invertebrate keepers of why live bugs have to be packaged well. I believe most wasps can chew out of cardboard and might give plastic a go unlike regular honey bees so I hope Allen has fun if he does manage to ship out his wasps.

Ok apiarist here. I often have bees in my car. Honestly I open the windows and sunroof, turn the AC on, and just drive on. I have never been stung at the wheel. They mostly blow out, the hardest ones to shift are the ones buzzing at the rear window. If they’ve come in while I’m harvesting honey I’ve fucked up, but sometimes I fuck up. Each bee will have their fill and then fly home and that’s not actually very much honey per bee. Out of kindness I just drive round the block a few times until they are all out. That way they are still in range to get home safe. Bees don’t make it back in if You stay on the move.

You can connect an air kopressor tank vertically next to the pump. It will fill up with water untill the air is compressed to the same pressure as the water and then it acts as a buffer to smooth out the waterflow in the pipe. But it has to be able to withstand the waterpressure, which will be more than typicall air compressor ratings.
