Poor Old girl 2 hard falls in her life, The last one I think may have taken too much out of her non less I pray she recovers from it. They might just retire her from public viewing. Her room now separates her from the other gorillas by a fence but they are able to see each other The issue seems to be related to her arthritis so moving around will always be a challenge for Nene. If she improves they need to find a way to get the other gorillas away from her

I did see in one video Nene had a mini fall from the rope going to the ground but was hanging and not wanting to fall as it was a bit far so you could see she thought about it and then let go and she did hurt her right leg and that was before the big fall,so I don't think she is going to make it back to the family not this time,can still hope though.Love you Nene rest up well.x

With great sadness I need to say that I feel within the very near future we are going to hear the dreadful news that Nene is no longer with us. I'm just preparing myself. She is 52, which is a long-life span for a gorilla. I hope that I am wrong, but there is nothing being said about what's really going on, so that makes me think they don't want people to know. We love you Nene.💖 PS: Shabani, Ai and Kiyo have all lost weight. Annie appears to be holding her normal weight. I feel for this troop. They don't know what's going on, they just know somethings wrong with Nene. Kiyo looks so sad. 😥

I worry for the troop because when Nene dies I don't know what the troop or the zoo will do when that happens as they've only basically lived in captive and haven't had a Matriarch die there. This concerns me a lot.

Bingo. As someone who spent many years in this field, I completely understand what the zoo staff/vet are doing. They have an elderly, ill gorilla to care for plus many other species as well. They also own Nene, as she is not on loan like Shabani. This zoo has the right to release or withhold information to the public. Personally, I think they're doing a great job, and are following the correct protocols for her care. Viewers don't understand how truly hard it is to care for a sick gorilla, especially one I'm personally assuming is asymptomatic and elderly. I do not believe Nene had a stroke. They have to maintain an extra degree of sterilization, maneuver the rest of the gorilla family around, keep limited contact, etc. I'm sure there's a lot of vocalizing going on indoors too, especially with Nene being separated. We just have to believe when the time is right that Nene will make her appearance, but I don't believe she'll return to the family any time soon. That's just my personal opinion.

I believe Nene had a stroke when she fell from the rope. Her back right leg went completely limp & her right eye lid drooped to the point of complete closure. I wish the zoo would be open and honest with her medical disgnosis. I don't understand why they are being so secretive about her medical disgnosis and true current condition.

My suggestion of a possible stroke came from a primate vet who watched the episode of Nene falling off the rope, along with other YT visuals of her following her fall. Thats when her right leg went limp along with her right eye fully drooping...along with her loss of appetite. I'm glad her appetite has improved according to the zoo keepers. So, what are you basing your diagnosis on?

I wonder why the zoo is being so secretive, all they say is Nene is getting better but not what happened was it trauma from a fall or an over zealous attack or a stroke? They left her for days before doing anything and allowed Shabani to be too rough with her, when he pulled her down off her spot my heart stopped, she nearly fell from a height because of Annie. It's just shameful.

@@lyndamac1058 her leg was either injured or failing due to old age. No one is really sure how the initial injury happened. She actually did fall from about 12’ up off the ropes onto the concrete floor smashing her head and already injured leg. She was also not eating either due to pain or something else. The last video she was shown with the troop was when Shabani ripped her off the perch. They segregated her shortly after that.

Shabani is her mate and also AI's as well. Shabani is the Sire of Annie (AI) and Kiyomosa (Nene). Shabani has an amazing lineage, and is an amazing silverback. Nene is a grand ole western herself. If you like Shabani, check out Haoko and Momotaro. Haoko is Shabani's brother, and Momotaro has a link as well. Shabani's family lineage encompasses many zoos around the world.

I think Nene has a very serious hip sprain/fracture after an extra rotation, inflicted by Shabani incidentally, the kind that forces humans to undergo surgery to walk again. Kiyomasa is scared because last week Shabani (again) he pierced his foot with a canine. He has a 10 cm scar on his foot. ..They look inside also because it was a their space that is now closed.

It seems from this video we've lost any emotional progress with the troop; they're stepping over uneaten food and pacing again. I know the zoo is keeping info close to their chest, but would a keeper answer a question? Did they remove Nene from the troop completely with this "bedroom"? It appears the family are looking for her again which would be unlikely if they knew she was in the basement. Gorillas have object permanence - they don't need to have Nene in sight to know she's there somewhere. But the family are acting like Nene has disappeared?

The zoo appears to be ill equipped to handle this situation. Releasing statements through KZbin channels instead of publicly posting something is a sign that they don’t have a good handle on it and are just letting everyone in the troop suffer through this including Nene. It’s their responsibility to do the humane thing for her and the troop and they have failed terribly at it. It’s now our responsibility to hold them accountable for this.

The order is broken in the group due to Nene's absence. The rest of the family follows Shabani around to give him the sense that he is their leader, restoring order. That is the feeling that I get 🦍🦍🦍🦍

Kiyomasa isn't worried about Nene. She reached out to him for help the day Annie pummeled her and he drew back from her and even joined in the beating. Ai truly cares but she let it go on too. Only Shabani intervened on Nene's behalf. 🦍
