Pete has just arrived in Bangkok as the country is celebrating the festival of Songkran -- the traditional Thai New Year, where people splash and soak one another with water in the streets. It's a joyful holiday, but Pete can't participate. He's in town to make a business deal, as part of his job selling high-end coffee machines.
He gets stuck in Bangkok's infamous traffic and decides to make his way to the hotel on foot. But when he gets lost amongst the many back alleys and side streets of the city, he drops into a coffee shop for help, where he meets its proprietor Mai. As pressures mount on Pete, he heads out into the city for a night that will change the rest of his life.
Directed and produced by Bank Tangjaitrong and written by Ben Macleod, this thoughtful short romantic drama takes advantage of cinema's inherent ability to capture the unique time and tenor of a place to show us a different corner of the world. With an appreciation of sensory detail and an ambling pace that soaks in the sights and sounds of a faraway city, it encourages its main character, and us, to slow down, take in the surrounding world and people and enjoy the ride of life.
With its combination of melancholic romanticism and a somewhat lost, alienated character wandering in a strange land, the short may remind some of Sofia Coppola's award-winning film Lost in Translation. Visually, those films share a thoughtful, considered approach to composition, an almost musical sense of editing and a romantic softness in the lighting and color. Both films, too, set up their main character amidst a hotel setting, feeling unmoored by their present life but not sure where to go quite next.
But while Coppola's film had no meaningful interaction with Japanese culture that transformed the characters, much of the narrative here is driven by Pete's improvisatory friendship with Mai, which develops throughout a near-magical night full of wandering, conversation and connection.
Actors Danny Lee and Kanticha Chumma have an easygoing, affectionate back-and-forth as they embody two people both struggling quietly in life and draw each other out with palpable connection. As the storytelling develops into a night-time whirl of sounds and sensations, it captures the intoxicating magic of Bangkok at night, and how both find the fun and adventure in life once again through one another.
Rich and romantic in feeling and sensibility, SONGKRAN captures the magic of connection, particularly during traveling, when we can be unusually open despite knowing we may never see someone again. But it is wise enough not to overplay its hand and isn't afraid to reveal that a magical night doesn't always lead to a happily-ever-after. In managing that disappointment, Pete learns a valuable lesson, one that reflects the ethos of Thailand, whose people believe in the spirit of "sanook." Often translated as "fun," it is a profound appreciation of life, no matter what your circumstances, and a willingness to enjoy the moment -- because that moment is all we truly have. As Pete learns, there will always be disappointments and difficulties, but there is also beauty and adventure that await us, if only we jump at the opportunity.

We had such a good time; laughing and talking so much that the flight attendant had to tell us to keep it down. She said she felt like she had known me for a long time. This was my second time watching Songkran, and the first time I watched it, I focused on the relationship between Pete and Mai, what should've been and couldn't be. But this time, about a year later in my life, the most significant part of the film turned out to be Pete's smile as he said "don't worry about it, I've got time," to his driver. Although I am so young, I spend so much time fretting about what needs to happen and the things I need to do to get there, while I should really be spending more enjoying all the opportunities I come across, such as Pete did as he decided to explore the rural town in Thailand instead of continuing his unpleasant work experience.

I think Mai has issues not being thought about. She’s frustrated with her husband, and maybe her life, and is the one talking about jumping, “to the other side”. Pete is a typical guy in a foreign land. He’s got his work issues and is a bit lonely and falls in love too easily. At least Pete jumped. Mai remains stuck in her situation, in an unhappy marriage and not willing to jump, so she encourages him to jump. Living vicariously through others. Great story and excellent actors. First time watcher but subbed up for the next one.

That's an interesting take. It seemed to me she felt free, enjoyed her work (by the way she described her passion for making coffee), and had time to enjoy life, go to her friend's bar, enjoy a night out in town with a random stranger, and still come back home to her family. She was not complaining about her situation, so I'm curious how you deduced she was stuck and unhappy. Is she stuck and unhappy because she has a husband and child? To me, she felt for him because he was obviously sad; on the surface, he had this amazing job where he gets to travel and discover new places and people, yet he didn't seem to enjoy it; and he was stuck because of the fear of the unknown (didn't know what else to do). She therefore gave him the logical advice, which is to take a leap of faith.

Last year I met a girl in German class at university, it began with just a hi and our names. The next week we started talking, grabbed a drink after class and chatted for an hour or so and exchanged numbers. That night she invited me to "study" in the library but when we met up we knew no one was going to study, we walked around campus together. With small breaks sitting, the conversation ran more fluently and comfortably than I could ever imagine. A few days later I asked her out and took her for some ice cream and a surprise picnic under a tree by a river. A week went by with alot of hours together. She asked me out for a movie that we enjoyed and afterwards we walked through campus holding hands sharing thoughts. One night was cold and we cuddled together, neither of us wanting to say goodbye till about 3 am. It was the first time I have ever experienced something like this, someone truly enjoying me and wanting to spend time with me. I asked her out to a dance and surpised her with a small succulant plant because she loved gardens and plants. We enjoyed the night of the dance ending it with another movie as it was our last night together before we went home for vacation (living far apart). We fell asleep together about mid way through so I took her home. We said our goodbyes. After 1 day back home I saw her on instagram kissing her boyfriend.

Despite the nonaccents, the film captured many of the essences of Thailand. Thailand can fundamentally change your perception of life. I write this as I sit in a seaside condo in Thailand. I sold my home and gave away the rest. I owe nothing and own little but am happier than ever. Thank you for this film. I needed to remember my first experience here. It was much the same.

Mai looks like and reminds me of an amazing woman I knew through work. She was smart, kind, and full of energy. We got along great and I appreciated the time she gave me. It was never romantic but even after she stared a life with a co-worker, she still made me appreciate the small connections we still had. She was all smiles that night because for once in a long time, she felt free from it all. Going back was not an option -- she just jumped. Thugs were nearby, looked up, saw Pete, and immediately nabbed him, threw him in the trunk and sped off. When, through torture, they discovered Pete worked for a large conglomerate, he was held several months for ransom as payback for the loss of Mai but was released when they finally realized the company didn't give a damn about him. Now, Pete -- missing three fingers, walking with a limp and suffering amnesia not knowing who he was -- stumbled the streets of Bangkok aimlessly, begging for a cup of Mai's Special Blend from passersby.

I don't know how I feel but I've got to be honest. I've been single for a long time after a near fulfilling relationship but have never really met anyone the same way again. These movies are so well made that we forget to appreciate them. Instead we start to look for these in our own lives, and that's something that might not even happen. How crazy is it that a clip like this sends us down an emotional lane we love and we hate. Was that even the 'jump' that Pete wanted? What was she hiding from? And the hug?! Was as beautiful as it could get, but messed both each other up. Do we even try to fall in love? Do we engage our 'brains'? I feel a little hollow inside. Man, I must stop watching these. I knew how it was going to end the second Pete walks into that cafe and there's a man sitting with a boy at the table. At first, I thought it was unusual this time because unlike many Omeleto movies I had watched before the whole thing was completely predictable. Then I saw the director's name in Thai after which all my wonder disappeared. This kind of plot twist is so common in Thai films that every Thai has been subconsciously attuned to it at this point. Edited: I just realized there’s a hidden message in this movie. The woman's name, Mai, means "new" in Thai. So she symbolizes a new chapter in Pete's life. But that might as well be a coincidence.

Having lived in Thailand for about 12 years I can confirm this kind of thing happens almost everyday ! The writer and director has also seen the same thing many times over and they captured the essence of a stranger in Thailand perfectly ! The moment Pete stepped out of the taxi and got his first experience of Bangkok in between rain showers he was seduced, there was no hope for him and he would fall for the first girl that showed any interest in him. Mai also recognised the symptoms of a man about to be absorbed by the romance of her exotic land and was happy to be a part of that experience for one evening, especially as her husband was preoccupied, she meant no harm but also was clearly not looking for anything more. Pete was tired of his job and was not appreciated by his boss so it wouldn't take much to set him free, Thailand is a great place to get away from it all !

I saw the husband coming from miles away, they did an excellent job chosing her dialogue when on the phone halfway through, the kid is slipped in as a little bit of a surprise but it makes sense. The ending though, was absolutely brilliant!! I wasn't sure what was going to happen at all for the last 4 minutes or so, very well done!!!! I loved every second of this one!!!!!!! She is amazingly beautiful too!! 'Pete' is a better actor than you think too, I believe he was acting to make himself look like he wasn't very good at acting, if that makes sense? Lol All around GREAT FILM! A WORK OF ART THAT ALSO SLIPS US A MUCH NEEDED LIFE LESSON!

Good story, although the ending was disappointing. I understand not every story is "happily ever after". I'm thrown off by the female protagonist actually being married with a kid. Its perfectly fine that she went out alone for the night, and again no issues in her inviting the foreigner to join her. People are gregarious and meeting new people sharing thoughts and interests especially cross culturally is great. I enjoy learning about differences & similarities, etc... You may even find yourself somewhat attracted to them. BUT she absolutely should have disclosed the fact that she is a married woman. I feel it was very disrespectful to her husband, and extending to her family. Additionally deceptive was the lack of information shared during the night out on the town. I enjoyed the sights of Bangkok and it was nice to see a connection between the two characters. Very well acted, and believable roles. Thank you👏

That's the point... the story has less weight and no conflict if there was no ambiguity and shock behind her actions, which is arguable, reality. Emotional struggle creates chaos in decisions, which is why we admire and see strength in those who do the "morally" correct decision (morally in quotes bc our morals are not black and white always, but often colored in grey). This makes the story true interesting art bc its messiness is real. edit: in my opinion lol

This short was well done as most all of Omeleto's offerings are. For me it provoked somewhat mixed feelings about Mai. Was she a flirt? Was she totally honest with Pete? Maybe they both saw their short time together as a respite from a life they may not have been totally happy in. I really liked the short. I am sorry that happened to you Sheryl. I know how that feels. Same thing happened to me with my ex girlfriend. I found out later after she broke up with me that she was always weighing me versus the other guy and I guess I came up short because I was not into money as much as the other guy was. I was more into her and what I wanted to do for a living which was flying. Anyway it is pretty awful how some people don’t really care about how much pain they cause the other person. You’ll meet a another guy who’ll treat you the way you deserve.
