Sonic Adventure 2 - All Dr. Eggman cutscenes

Deem Bristow, bless his soul, did a fantastic job at helping build Eggman's character in the 3D Sonic world, which is such an important thing for the series. It saddens me that his performance is so overlooked, especially due to ahem, recent meme related occurrences. :( But Deem makes me hold Eggman so dearly to me, just as much as Mike does! His voice is so nice to listen to and I find his quiet, gruff and sinister tone very soothing. It brings so much nostalgia because it's part of some of my most special memories 💜
These were all recorded by myself but I obviously didn't animate the cutscenes so I am not the owner of them lol. So they are free to use clips of, even without credit. Enjoy! ;)

For me SA1 eggman was the most intense. Not only did he get his own hands dirty by pursuing Sonic and Tails himself for the emeralds but he also built two space ships to stop them, 2 giant mechs which was egg viper and egg walker alongside a simple one at the start, made 5 e series combat robots and the green robot that chased Amy, found chaos and made him his super minion and even tricked Knuckles to go against Sonic for the second time and doing that was just a last minute plan. Dude was a beast in that game

A lot of characters peaked in this game. Shadow’s another example. He clearly had an unbreakable sense of honor that could have become his main strength as a hero. Instead, he fulfilled his one mission and, to paraphrase Inigo Montoya, he didn’t know what to do with the rest of his life. He became Identity Crisis the Hedgehog. Rouge, the anti-hero, treasure-hunting spy and double- and sometimes triple-agent, became a pointless background character. Knuckles, the Master Emerald’s guardian with no real idea of how he came by this sacred duty, and one of the few remaining members of an otherwise extinct echidna tribe, became a dumb brute who either approves memes or IS one. Tails, a brilliant machinist who single-handedly defeated Eggman twice, is forever Sonic’s kid brother. And Amy, who vowed after Sonic Adventure to not let her life be ruled by a crush, showed a little promise as a team leader in Sonic Heroes, before losing all sense of direction and merely putting on whatever face the writers want her to wear for the scene.

A:"shadow's story had plenty of potential, but they we're fumbled by so many little things, like his earbleedingly bad theme music that's impossible to understand, the memory tampering tomfoolery, and his clumsy resurrection. The writers could've made it so mutch easier for themselves to just leave out the memory tampering, and make him somewhat hesitant, but ultimately coaxed into it like Razer in the Green Lantern animated series. B:"rouge is a pair of boobs, who's overpacked role in the story is like trying to fit round pegs in a square hole, helped only slightly by a somewhat tolerable vocal performance. She should've iether been killed by eggman for spying and sabotaging him, or captured by g.u.n. for aiding two dangerous terrorists, allowing them to blow up a military facility(more than likely leading to casualties), and done nothing about the activation of a super weapon, that blew up half the moon, wich could've caused problems on a planetary scale(not that this game delves into that😂😅). She could've been so mutch better as an antisocial Rogue who's only concern is personal gain, but doe to repeatedly kind acts from knuckles and shadow, she comes to see there's more to life, ala Han Solo! C:"knuckles is an interesting nut to crack, because his potential and usage always had the pieces to become something great, but nobody ever assambled the complete picture. The lore about echidnas angering chaos leading to their demise almost reads like zuko's continual disillusionment towards the fire nation from avatar season 2 onwards, as if they we're hints towards knuckles potentially abandoning his"sacred duty". Sonic Prime, through knuckles the dread, highlighted the repetitive and restrictive nature of constantly involving the master emerald in a story to bring in knuckles, but never used it to drive his character choices, like being put in a position to choose it over his friends or vice versa. While media like sonic riders,the o.v.a. and even somewhat boom demonstrated what he could be, a muscular treasure hunter and adventurer who occasionally helps out his friends. Not to mention, the descisions involving casting old and generically gruff manly man sounding actors for him, constantly writing him like edmund from the Narnia movie but with way too many concussions, and his terrible writing and portrayal in Sonic X, practically garanteed he'll always be known as"knuckle-head"! D:"the guy who couldn't figured out that eggman hide on a space station after blowing up half the moon, then broadcasting from said station, is"brilliant"? You Sonic fans should seriously learn what words mean, otherwise garbage tumbles from your mouths, Tails' whole nightwing esque"I wanna be a hero in my own right, don't opress me"shtick has always been overplayed, and nonesensical from an in universe/meta perspective, because even from day one Tails has been a valuable partner to sonic beyond just giving him a boost when a surface was unreachable. So many of the things he says and does never seem to ring true for his character. He was pretty mutch perfect from day one, and just like with d.c., sega's attempts to make it more three dimensional and meaty, fall on deaf ears and make things more complicated and stupid then they need to be. E:"what's so wrong with amy liking Sonic? Does she have to be some kind of butch tomboy, with man hating tendancies and flip their dynamic(sonic is in love with her, but She don't return it) for you and other fans to like her? Most of the growt she recieved over the years are a direct consequence of meeting sonic back on little planet, so I wouldn't be surprised if they'd officially dated. Further more, unlike Sally who tends to be an obnoxious know it all, and bossy, amy is equally free spirited as sonic, her temper provides a good foil to his laid back attitude, and her adventure seeking personality would be fare more fitting for the slightly thrill seeking and careless sonic then, a stay at home house dad king with his life sally. By trying to make her less closely associated with him, not defining her relationship to the others more, and giving her unfulfilling different stuff to do(her m.o. in s.a. 1 is literally the same as big's), sega achieved the complete opposite of what the fans we're hoping to happen. Because"Surprise", making a female character More independant doesn't make her Less disposable, but even More so! "Hallo(2x),anybody home?"-"think(2x)McFly"! By having them officially be togather, you can involve her in stories fare more naturally, her can do attitude and growing skill level would make for an effective rivalry with sonic that'd actually make sense(unlike the others) and would make sense why it sticks, and the rivalry angle could also keep their relationship from being stale and overly sugary, I can imagine them playfully ribning on each other, racing, compliments and occasional smooches galore, maybe you can even extend her backstory. She's one of the most consistently/least horribly handled(with a few exceptions)chracters in this whole franchise, and the only fictional heroine from the 20th century who hasn't become a man hating unlikable girlboss(she-hulk,captain marvel,ect). She has so mutch untapped potential and stories to tell. But don't gut the emotional core that make her Her! If a female character is to be a good role model, then wouldn't it make sense to not Sand down the edges, so relatability can be achieved? I admit sometimes that can be overdome and lead to a character becoming unlikable, but with careful planning and good writing, it's not an impossible task. "Every Rose, has it's Thorns"

As much as I like Mike's Eggman,Bristow's take on the character made him seem like a James Bond villian. It suprisingly works for Eggman and would fit pretty well with a more serious take on the character like in this game with how he literally blows up half of the moon.

Eggman used to be a serious villain. He regularly builds over planets, uses little animals for a power source, and has more death traps in a single game then the entire James Bond series combined. I do enjoy modern Eggman's softening in some regards, but at the end of the day he was designed to be an evil conquer who destroys environments and torments animals. That's his history and while I think this series was an interesting bridge to soften him up, I appreciate that they don't shy away from that aspect of the character here. Deem Bristow really captured that aspect of the character while giving him enough realism and caution that you could believe he would help his enemies in saving the world. It would have been interesting to have seen what performances he could have given going forward.

Something that I like about this Eggman is that he is not just another villain out of the bunch, the serious intonation and how he expresses himself is fantastic; even when he thought he finally won he showed respect to Sonic by calling him his admirable adversary. I really don’t like the sound mixing in the cutscenes. The music and the lyrics commonly drowns out the dialogue, especially for Eggman, as he doesn’t talk as loudly as the others.

Yeah, that was a huge issue with this game. It sucks that you can barely hear him because I love the hushed tone Deem Bristow gave him. They should've considered it when adding the music because you shouldn't have to listen to the raw voice clips to hear them in their true glory. Bristow gave us the Eggman I pictured if he was real, a super criminal with a silly name yes...but one with an entire empire of machines at his beck and call, an armada of floating battleships, a weapon capable of battling Sonic both even ground and surpassing him in speed...and is smart enough to play his enemies for fools...the perfect enemy for someone like Sonic.

Something about the whole "blowing the moon in half" thing kinda bugs me; wouldn't that create an unstable climate for the world? I'd rewrite it to where the story treats it more like he's holding the moon as a bargaining chip. Something with lines like "The destruction of the moon will ravage the planet, but I am not without mercy; if your world leaders submit to me in 24 hours, I will use my machines to repair the moon."

I think it just goes to show that Eggman will do some wild things and not have contingency plans if/when something goes wrong, like him not being able to control the Zeti in Lost World long because he never bothered researching the instrument to control them first. It's what makes him such a good villain, but also a easily beat one. He never plans for failure, even though most of his plans fail.

one of the few times (in the games) we dig under the surface of Eggman as a character, with him dealing with Geralds betrayal and his discussion at the end. Shadow 2005 had a bit of this too. it shows that he's not just a evil villain, it hinted at things that would be further expanded upon 22 years later to great success.

I still feel that with SA2, he was disappointed that Gerald hadn't considered him personally as his grandson that admired and was inspired by his genius might still be around to be affected and how his actions almost resulted in his destruction and the world he wants to rule too. He only said "did he really mean to destroy us" in his refection of it because everyone literally would've died if it had succeeded. It really seems that way when he'd still go on to cause catastrophic global destruction just steps away from completely destroying the planet himself multiple times after. And Eggman being shocked and appalled by Gerald betraying his people for Black Doom? I don't feel like it's for any other reason than he hates betrayal when it affects him and is appalled to find out that his idol has done just that, once again putting the world and people in it, specifically himself, in potential danger again. But it's also hypocritical of him as he is a master of manipulation and betrayal himself, so the way he's personally mad about it is rooted in his selfishness, aside from it being something that can surprise anyone. And his confession to lying to Shadow during the Devil Doom fight also isn't even an apology, he never says sorry. And after that, in his Expert Mode dialogue, he literally laughs the gaslighting situation off and not only doesn't understand the impact he's had on Shadow but also doesn't care that he's upset with him, pointing this out with amusement and a "very well" because he's a bastard 🥰💜

I love Mike Pollok and I understand why he's synonymous with the character now, but much like with Kevin Michel Smith vs Mark Hamil in the role of Joker, Deem Bristow is the man I keep coming back to as Eggman. He has the sadistic creepy tendencies of classic Eggman, with the hints at a genuine respect and concern for his allies that would become more prevalent in later games. Sonic Adventure 2 is the bridge between the classic and the modern Eggman and is arguably the game that shows us the most of his character. I will never not love this game's story, no matter how outdated the graphics are. RIP Deem Bristow.

Fun fact: Eggman spelling out the password as "MA-RI-A" instead of "M-A-R-I-A" is likely a translation error. In Japanese, there are no individual characters for consonants except for N. Instead, the characters indicate a consonant followed by a vowel (for instance, there are unique characters for "sa," "so," "mu," "mi," etc). In the case of the name "Maria," in Japanese it is spelled "マリア" or "MA-RI-A," hence Eggman spelling it out using syllables rather than letters.

I can see it irritates you seeing people are more concerned with the achievements of a bunch of rank amateurs than the real VAs.
