Being a Canon user for over 15 years this has been a tremendous help. Sony menus just suck but with your help, I was able to give it a conscious meaning and get the most out of the camera. And yes, I watched the whole thing, although it took me a couple Scotches to go through :)

Thank you, glad it helped. Sorry that my long rambling triggered an inevitable drinking binge! :-b

One thing that took me ages to realize is that if you want to record 4K back up video to the card inserted in the slot 2, you need a larger capacity (at least 64 gb) SDXC UHS-1 card. I spent ages trying to figure out why my 32 gb SDHC UHS-1 Sandisk Extreme PRO card would not allow that for backup video, but would work fine in slot number 1!

I almost never comment on anything online, but I learned so much from watching your video that I can't thank you enough. It was informative and to the point! Thank you!

This is definitely the best A7R III controls survey on KZbin. Thanks so much! And no, you can never be too detailed talking about this complicated camera. I wish you would think about doing a companion vid concentrating on stills settings. Your communication skills are the best I have found on photography.

Thanks for your kind comment. I'm afraid I couldn't do justice on the still photography side of things, and hope you'll come across a good resource on that. I did notice that the new pixel-shift technology (a photo-only feature) is summarized here: camerajabber.com/sony-pixel-shift-multi-shooting/

Thank you thank you. I love the pace it allowed me to dig through the menus and follow along at the same time. Great job!

This is a great video, very helpful and thorough. My comment is that you had no subject material in your field of view. The lens cap view isn't working so well, something to look at besides black would have been an easy thing to do in this video. Why the black?

I agree that an ideal, best-case video of this nature would include visible content from time to time that shows what the menu settings are doing (though actually there's no case of the menus ever being capable of transparent overlays). The running time is quite long at one hour and forty-two minutes, and alas, then it would have been the longer to hear my endless rambling... :-)

Well in any case I think it was a fabulous video, you have cleared up a mountain of questions I had about my A7Riii. Thanks!

You're a fan of baritone William Sharp? Good taste.

It's been a delight to work with him on two films. He's the first featured artist, singing "Dover Beach," in my feature-length documentary about Samuel Barber that's available now: www.samuelbarberfilm.com. And I'm in post-production on that opera film you saw footage from, while you can pre-order now if interested: www.scroogeopera.com. Thanks for spotting him and pointing him out, I'm a big fan too.

Also I disagree about the custom buttons. Even though the camera may change and those custom buttons follow, the same can be said about learning the menu, in either case you need to relearn. And besides how hard is it to set up a handful of shortcuts, really.
@focuspulling6 жыл бұрын
I must admit to over-simplifying that feature, and to each their own. But if I hadn't mentioned in the video proper (can't recall), my reason is that the custom slots on the mode dials are more than sufficient for me. Past a certain level of shooting quality, numerous (if not most) parameters require manual tweaks responsive to varying environments, and the best that presets can do, is dock us into just a few of the biggest variable marquee functions.

Agreed.

Hello :-). Are you able to set AF face priority during video?
@focuspulling6 жыл бұрын
Definitely, it works well (described here briefly at 31:32). Does not include the more sophisticated tracking function introduced for still photography, though.
@kamotionmarketing6 жыл бұрын
I think all the picture profiles are set to "some setting" but all of them are customizeable. So it let's you have 10 different presets for video. Where it says s-log 3 : you press enter on it and another deeper menu shows up and you can pick what ever you want for that picture profile. You have the best video. Thanks. RP
@focuspulling6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Randall. I confess that I have not done much experimentation beyond the baked-in defaults for the S-Log picture profiles, but the principal reason has been my reliance upon LUTs that require stability as to those settings. For example, in order for FilmConvert to not only emulate certain film stocks precisely, but also to match different cameras to the same look, it needs to apply its LUT to footage at the default picture profiles. I do envision us all moving toward Hybrid Log Gamma mode (PP10) once there's enough of a community of LUTs and workflows supporting it! It's reportedly superior even for non-HDR outputs.

First sample is at 21:00, next at 33:18; the first few seconds of this video (and interactive guide at www.focuspulling.com/a7riii) map out to you that my review points and footage samples are integrated into this menu tutorial.
