Here in Germany's North conversations are sometimes very rudimentary. Let me give you an example in High German: "Guten Tag" "Guten Tag" "Wie geht es dir denn so?" "Es geht mir eigentlich ganz gut" This becomes here: "Moin!" "Moin!" "Na? Und?" "Joah, ne?"

"huch" benutze ich zum Beispiel wenn ich ganz vertieft in etwas bin und dann etwas Ungeschicktes mache. Also zum Beispiel wenn ich ganz in Gedanken bin und dann jemanden anremple. Dann kommt erstmal "huch." und dann erst die Entschuldigung.

+An Awesome Potato Nee, upps ist: "Da ist mir was Blödes passiert." Huch ist: *aus den Gedanken hochschreck* "ist irgendwas passiert? Ja, ich glaub, was blödes." Also immer, wenn man "huch" sagen kann, kann man auch "upps" sagen, aber nicht andersrum. Also, nicht zu jedem upps passt auch ein huch. Aber das ist natürlich nur mein Empfinden, andere sehen das vielleicht anders.

+Linguaphile You are correct. It was in fact the capital of pagan, pre-Christian Sweden. The name may be a false cognate and purely coincidental as regards the German word in question, or the two may be related in some way. It would be interesting for you to try to see if you can find a connection.

Since so many people brought up «huch» before, which is an awesome word, I can focus on the other things: Trixi kind of sneakily hid a very powerful word from you! And that word is «Na». It's north German and exists in a variety of forms («Na?», «Naa?», «Naaaa?» etc.) The number of «a»s denotes your closeness with that person. As to the meaning, «Na?» means «How do you do?» and has two possible answers. You can say «Hm» which means that you're fine, but it kind of ends the conversation. So usually you would reply with «Naa?» (note that an «a» was added) indicating that you're doing fine and are interested in how the other person feels too. And that's pretty much the entire conversation. Let's imagine, for example, that you meet your sister from Hamburg, then the conversation would go like this: You: «Moin!!» Sis: «Moin.» You: «Naaaa?» Sis: «Naaaaaaaaa?» You quickly hug and then stare out to the sea.

It might interest you to know that in Jiddisch two people can carry on an entire conversation only using variations of the word "Nu". Same idea, I guess.

For disgust I like to use "pfui Teufel" or just "na, wäääh" xD And I also like "aha" but in the sarcastic sense, when you don't believe something and you're like "Aha, wer's glaubt...". And "Ach so" just gets shortened to "Aso" (pronounced as "asso"). Well, there a quite a few onomatopoeia in German that I like :D

Was "T!" said already? (Alveolar snapback tongue with Air intake) It is when you are upset about something or more about an action by another, mostly youth. (Older people do it more often (older than the offensive one, that is)) It can also be done 3 times or more to express that something should not be done or is wrong. Oh, "Na na na" is almost the same. "Na" alone like "T" alone. :D That is quite funny. For disgust like "bäääh", I would rather do "Uäch" or something. Hard to write down. And how about "Pfff". It is like Ach in a dismissive way, but probably less polite. "Pff, interessiert mich nicht." Or even without explanation. Love that collaboration and the inspiration to think about that stuff. :D

I remember maaaaaannny German Teachers...and even other students started counting every "ähm" you said, making a game out of it. It's more like "Ähm, wo war ich?" or "ähm....was wollte ich gerade sagen?"...could be called confusion, yes....but I consider it...weaker than actual confusion...It's more likely for me to link it with...being nervous :D

oh I love 'Hä?' You can really put a lot of 'I don't get it', 'What?' and a pretty wide range of 'How stupid is that? ' in this tiny word. And the grimace you make, when you say it very intensely, is awesome!

+Yuki Yume no Tsubasa It really depends on the context. When a friend tells me about a silly thing someone else did, I say 'Hä? Why did she/he did that?' When I don't understood, what someone else said, because I was elsewhere in my mind or because it was to noisy I say 'Bitte?' or 'Sorry, was hast du gesagt?' in the last context Hä? really is rude :) in the first one its okay.

+Wanted Adventure yes I would say... it is also used when you have little accidents, like you bumb into someone because you did not pay attention and then you might say "Hoppla"... at least this is the way it is used in the Alsace region (where I lived 20 years).. There is a German saying "hoppla jetzt kommt ich!"... this is more in the sense: attention, it is me arriving (on stage e.g.)!

Yellow House what do you mean by "it does not make sense"?. Do you mean that YOU don't understand the meaning? "Hoppla jetzt komm ich" is a saying in Germany and a famous song by Hans Albers, so I did not make this up!
@yellowhouse4911
@yellowhouse4911 8 жыл бұрын
+Ulrich Lehnhardt im from Germany and lived here my whole life and in your first comment you wrote "hoppla jetzt kommT ich" the kommt in this context does not make any sense and you will never hear a German say "hoppla jetzt komm ich" because we say hoppla if some small accidents happen and not to announce ourselves

Woo! It's so great to see you two together! I really like both of your channels, so I hope that this isn't the last collaboration between you guys. :D I also really liked this video as such. I remember thinking, on the "Sounds Americans use" video, that it would be fun with a German equivalent. While I knew the American expressions really well, these German ones were a lot harder. I recognized "ach" and "ach so", even if I perhaps wouldn't have been able to define exactly define what they meant. But I remember my relatives using them a lot whenever I'm in Germany. :D

"Hm" -> thoughtful noise "Äh" -> filler word if you lost track of what you wanted to say "Pff" -> noise of disgust or disapproval "Hmpf" -> noise of frustration "Uff" -> either used after/while doing a strenuous task (like lifting something heavy) or to show sympathy for someone who tells you about a hard thing they're going through ("Uff, das klingt übel") Also I may be wrong but I feel like clicking your tongue if you're annoyed isn't really common in English, but in Germany it's definitely a thing.
