Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he has to work on his own vehicle! Yes even his stuff needs attention once in a while. In this video he shows how to replace the front brake pads and rotors on his 2013 Toyota Tundra TRD 5.7 4x4. These trucks use a 4 piston brake caliper and are unique in that sense. We use all OEM parts (Made in USA) and show how to clean lubricate and install them. Enjoy!!

Toyota tech here, when I saw it was brakes on a Tundra I thought "oh shit, the pins are gonna be frozen and so are the pistons." But for being out in that rust belt you got way luckier than the ones we see here in Illinois. For future reference if you're interested, Snap on has a nice little air hammer attachment to square up on those pins and shoots em out like bullets, it also fits perfectly thru the holes to drive them all the way thru. just make sure no one's standing by the other end when you shoot em out because boy do they fly! And I think it's Blue Point that makes the ratcheting quad piston tool, don't bother it's junk!! Very nice work, you did everything we do. Impressed by the OEM parts too and not aftermarket crap. Lastly, never seen any other tech replace the caliper bolts and in 7 yrs haven't seen any problems. Love your channel Mr. O!

Eric, as a former automotive trainer for our U.S. Air Force (33 plus years of service) I really appreciate a GREAT job of task based repairs via video training. Detail was excellent and presentation equally impressive. I really like that you can laugh at your mistakes, speaks volumes about your character. I wanted to come back and say this was the clearest and most comprehensive video I have seen regarding the Toyota front brakes. At the end of a dealer service they dropped the hammer on me and said my front brakes were “in the red” and “only 1mm left” and wanted $650 for the job. I spent the next day watching videos of how to do the repair myself and first thing this morning started at 8am replacing the pads and rotors. By 10:30 I was buttoned up and testing the new brakes.The file to clean up the channels was a great tip as well as applying grease to the channels and pins. Really a great video and you saved me $400 right before Christmas, I really appreciate it. I have to do the rear brakes in a week or two, time to start the research for that project. Thank you again for a great how to video.

@@josephszilagyi5651 Joe, get them from NAPA Auto Parts, no matter what type of vehicle. For Toyota products, they are OEM Toyota reman units, powder coated with an awesome coating that doesn't rust and they come with a lifetime warranty. I agree, this design is shit. I replaced my calipers in 2016 and warrantied them yesterday and got two new ones. I paid $109.99 each, back in 2016 and they are priced about the same today. Buy them once, never pay for them again. Thank you for this video, I rarely ever respond/post and I know this is over 2 years old, but still thankful for you and your video. I just purchased a used 2015 Tacoma a few months back and just hit 50K and need to do a brake job. The Tundra brake system is almost identical to the Tacoma. My rotors look good on the truck, will have to get them off to check them fully, but I'm not getting any noise and only has 1/4" or less left of pad. At the least I will get the rotors turned, local shops charges $15 each. I live in Allen Park, Michigan with the amount of salt used etc. the Tacoma doesn't look bad. I went ahead and a Krown treatment done when I bought it and bought a pack of fluid film and some of the other products on your Amazon site. Well this is probaly why I don't post, I end up writing a short story. Thanks again, all of your videos are excellent, some... most are over my head, but the more simple routine maintenance jobs is what I'm after to save my family money, I always try to do it myself 1st. I have a 2012 Ford Escape as well, so any more videos on that especially the 4 motor/trans mounts would help me out. Take care and God Bless!

I just did front brakes on my 2010 Tundra Limited about 6 months ago due to exact same problem with a rust ring on inside of rotor, but mine were a lot worse (approx a 1inch ring). Then brakes started squeaking again, this time rear brakes had rust ring on inside rotor. Replaced with all Toyota parts 2 weeks ago, and brakes are smooth and work very well. Toyota technician mentioned rust ring is a common problem, especially if vehicle sits for long periods of time. Would love to see future maintenance videos on the Tundra. Keep up the great videos Eric O. , I've learned a lot watching your videos. Cheers from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

I just did one last week , and I watched your video to see if there was anything special about the brakes . It did look like I might have a little bit of a problem but once I got into it it was a breeze . I contracted the 4 pistons with a single piston hand compressor with a small plate for the rear of the compressor , worked well for me , I assume the width of the piston compressors are the same , if not then I guess mine was just small enough to fit in . It was easier for me than to use 4 clamps , I seen the tool on amazon its not all that expensive , but the one I had worked well for me . Love your work you give people a lot of great ideas

What a turn around, it's a challenge just to keep up with the punches sometimes. Ya pulled out an actual torque wrench, that's pure evil genius right there. So relaxing to see a professional doing it right. The cost of those rotors, pads and shim kits in my country are huge. Possibly looking at $600 per side just for the parts for the front. Then the labor charge on top of that. About $80 to $120 per hour, depending if its gone to the agent or your local motor engineer. Owning trucks is expensive.

Instead of playing whack-a-mole with the pistons to get them all back in just use 2 large flat blade screwdrivers and pry the pads away from the rotor until they fully compress the pistons. Then remove the pads and unbolt the caliper.

I wonder why they didn't make the shims one piece. Sure would be easier. Does your Tundra have the 10,000lb GVWR? Reason why I'm asking is the 4 piston caliper seems to be over kill, but then again probably why they last so long. I think I just answered my own question. Another great video. Thank you Eric O.

Seth Leeseberg the full tow package includes 6 lug wheels/brakes, and since his are 5 lug, it doesn't have the larger brakes. But even without the larger brakes, the tundra has been 4 piston up front since 2000

Seth Leeseberg my 2010 Tacoma 4x4 has 4 piston calipers on the front as well. I think Toyota is a overkill kind of manufacturer. This is my first Toyota truck and coming from 3 Ford rangers previously, I don't think I'll ever buy another supposed domestic truck. Toyota is built like a tank and made me realize that the rangers were truly pop cans with wheels.
@SmittySmithsonite

Seth, I think Toyota's reasoning there with the 2 shims is to allow for movement without the piston gouging or wearing through one side of the shim. Just my personal observation - I have no proof of that. Just a guess.

Eric you are so right about the 'American' car makes having their OEM parts made in foreign countries. Not just GM and Dodge I just purchased a bunch of OEM Ford Motorcraft parts for my 02 and 05 Focuses: brake pads (mexico), spark plugs (japan, mexico), spark plug wires (mexico), ignition coil (china). I had always purchased OEM parts based on generally better quality and usually domestically made. But that is clearly not the case anymore. Ive always owned 'American' cars (for 40+ years) as I wanted to support my country's workers, industries, and economy. Im not sure Im really doing that anymore. It IS a disgrace for all this stuff to be made in foreign countries! God bless you Eric O. Paul

Please stop promoting pushing pistons back without the bleeder open. It's more critical on 2 and 4 piston calipers. The wear debris that settles at the bottom of bores is more than on single piston calipers. I end up seeing so many of these with the bottom inner piston stuck after someone pushed back without the bleeder open. On Toyotas you can get the domestic pads from Toyota that are competitive priced and comes with shims. Many top line after market pads come with the pins too.

I agree with the top of the line aftermarket pads. I have found on many customer cars that the aftermarket pads last even longer than the OEM pads. I generally don't use OEM pads unless the customer requests it, and the cost of the job goes up to the customer because of the additional cost.

I understand your point too but for 30 years I have never heard about this and no one I now either open the bleeder and never had any problem but I understand that there could be trouble........... but I keep do brake job this way like Eric. Hey Eric, Keep the Tundra service videos coming please. I have a 2011, and do most of the maintaince myself. My factory brakes lasted 80,000 miles. Last spring I did new pads and rotors on all four corners. FYI - When I completed the rears I had a bad rubbing sound and it took me a few hours to figure out what was going on. Turned out there was some rust build up behind the dust shield and it was pushing the dust shield up against the new rotors. Took a hammer and tapped around the dust shield real good and a lot of rust was fell out. After that, and a year later nice and quiet. Also did the transmission, rear diff, front diff, and transfer case fluid changes. For the transmission, I just did a drain and refill times three, over the course of two weeks. I was careful to measure what came out and put the same back in plus a little more. Each dump was like four quarts. Also did an idler pulley and serpentine belt at 70,000 miles as preventive maintainence. Love the videos - Please keep them coming !!

The rotors have threaded holes to use bolts to break the rotors free from the hub. I am surprised that you did not explain that process since some folks like me don't have a pneumatic hammer/ thingabob. Also.. If you could demonstrate the caliper spreading tool that you mentioned ( and I think I noticed a link for). That might sell a bunch of em and if it's possible. I would think you could sell the fluid film on your Amazon store if you had a link on this video. I know that I was disappointed not to see a link for it on this video. Thanks for posting your videos ( especially this one, I found it just in time). Your willingness to help folks by sharing your knowledge and experience is what makes u-tube cool. 👊
