Having just watched Mrs. O take matters into her own hands and change her oil, swap winter tires for summer and change out the cabin air filter, I'm not at all shocked to see Ms. Marie doing her brakes. I loved that she turned down gloves and wasn't embarrassed to have grease on her face. You're obviously a hero in her life and that's just awesome. Dude, you've got a fantastic family. You and the Mrs. are very definitely doing it right. Can't wait to see Trinity swapping the steering rack on her cozy coupe. (OK, she was driving that around the shop 7 years ago, but you get my drift...) I'm proud to say that all 3 of my kids (including my daughter) can drive a manual, change tires and brakes. My daughter is the first one to get a call from any of her friends when they have car problems. She may call me for advice, but her friends (in high school and college) knew she was a the first one to ask.

@@staceyfisher1479 I think it's common among young people these days to not do the basics for themselves. I work with a lot of twenty-something men and women who barely cook for themselves at all and when they do, it's food that is mostly prepared already in part or in full. Mostly, they just eat out and it is often food not good for them. As you said, the same goes for building or repairing stuff they use and need. I don't doubt that government schools are partly to blame, but I also blame parents who didn't take the time to teach their children the skills they need to be self-sufficient. However, everything a person needs to know is available on the internet so ultimately, it is up to the individual to learn; just have to want to do it.

As a ASE certified technician made me proud watching her do the job her self with very little help from a master mechanic. Takes me back when I first started wrenching. Learned how to service brakes and built my knowledge from that point on. She did good for her very first brake job. Only thing I would have done differently (again I am a pro and working against the clock; gotta love flat rate) use my 3/8's impact on the slide pin bolts and my half inch impact on the bracket bolts (if my 3/8's didn't have the muscle to break them loose). But overall good job, more women/young girls should take an interest in auto mechanics. I have always said; the vehicle don't care if your a guy or girl. It just needs fixing. If a girl wants to fix it; let her do the job.

That was awesome. She was actually excited about doing her own brake job. never could get either one of my daughters excited to do anything like that. On another note, I can see she has actually listened to you through the years from comments you have made and she says the same. That's awesome.

I'm all for young people learning how to do some auto work for themselves. In this case, a young woman to boot... kudos to her! I know in my life of owning vehicles, doing alot of the work myself has saved me a lot of time and money. Hopefully other young people, women included, can see this and get motivated to do some of these things themselves.

It was great to see the young lady doing the work herself and building her confidence. As the father of a confident, Independent daughter myself I believe it's important for them to understand the mechanics of the car even if they choose not to do the work themselves. Way to go.

Eric.. Been watching your vids for many a year now... If Avoca wasn't over 8 hours away, and across the border from where I hail from - you'd definitely be my go-to guy for all things mechanical... This video only reinforces that - not only are you a treasure trove of knowledge and more importantly - experience - but your willingness to share it in such an easy to understand and patient manner is simply unparalleled in all the other mechanic's videos I try to learn from. Seeing this video tonight - not only were you a teacher, but you were a mentor and a friend.. Willing to let Marie learn at her own pace, let her make her own mistakes but always there to catch them so that she ultimately never had to worry about paying for those mistakes but rather learn from them instead. As has be already said here before, seeing Marie's confidence level grow by the minute for every successful step she accomplished was truly a joy to watch. I have no doubt that her confidence and ability to learn more as time goes on will only grow faster and faster under your tutelage sir... Marie - keep up the great work... I have no doubt you will be the inspiration for so many others to follow in the future. Your confidence, your willingness to learn, even your willingness to get a little dirty - is and will be truly inspirational... But the awe, the look in your eyes when you did something new, or learned something new - coupled with the laughter all the way through - just shows that with a little patience and willingness to TRY - it only reinforces that cars aren't really the big scary mystery machines so many believe. So as Eric always says (with a little editorial license for this edition): "Remember folks... if *we* can do it, so can you..." and you've proven that in spades... Now, all you need to do is get Mrs. O to help you get the camera away from the old guy a little more often! LoL...

I love this! When my daughter was about 14, the family's car had brakes squealer, she was "SOOOOO EMBARSARSED" When I picked-up and dropped-off. At the time I was working long hours so I let it ride for a bit. She DEMANDED I resolve this issue. So, I told her she would have to replace the brakes (If she ever wanted to regain her dignity). Obviously, under considerable oversight, She actually completed the brake job. On a side note; not many Dads get to have bonding moments like this with their 14 year old, much less daughter. Fast forward 3 years, She's in a car with four boys, they have a flat tire. Not one of those guys knew how to change a flat. She came home and told me they couldn't believe she made them change it under her in direction. (proud Dad moment two)
