Thanks for the fun review! I just got back from seeing it and concur with your thoughts. McAvoy was great as a psychopath. The summer-long bombardment of trailers didn't leave me dying to see it, but I gave it a try because it was getting good reviews. Glad I did. I'm not a big horror movie guy, so I was glad it was mostly a psychological thriller rather than just a madman with an axe or a chainsaw. I hope it does well at the box office.

The Danish original was the most disturbing movie I’ve ever seen, and I saw the original Funny Games in a movie theatre in 1997 (at least Haneke had the decency to move the camera away in the most terrifying moment). Speak No Evil stayed with me for a long time. So when I heard that my friend bought a ticket to see the remake at the same film festival where we saw the original last year I thought he was crazy. But now that I heard so much about the ending being so different from the original I’m intrigued to watch it after all. Someone in the comments wrote that the passiveness of the father was almost unbelievable and hard to endure,and I agree with that. But I guess the director went with it to play the audience. By the way, I would recommend all people who haven’t seen the original not to watch the trailer of the remake before seeing it because it’s giving too much away. That one shot of the boy basically explains the title of the movie.

The original Speak No Evil (which was already mostly in English) is one of the most daring, bleak, darkest movies of the decade. I put it in the same category as, say, Funny Games, Goodnight Mommy, and Eden Lake. I'm surprised that the director of Eden Lake adapted this and changed it so much from the original. I'm still curious to see it, especially because I wasn't the biggest fan of the original (the Scoot McNairy equivalent in the original is INFURIATINGLY passive), but I just don't see how it can work with how neutered it is? It's like The Vanishing vs. The Vanishing, if you know what I mean.

@SeekingFilm4 ай бұрын
The original is, to me, one of the most laughably stupid and ineffective horror films I’ve seen in the last decade (as someone who doesn’t actively seek out trash and only comes across it when recommendations from others go awry). The Funny Games comparison is funny, because it just struck me as the movie people thought they were getting when they saw it and hated it. The new ending here is incredibly stupid, which is why I can’t be overall positive on the film, but it’s still better than the tonally confused garbage it’s remaking; at least this one knew it should primarily be a comedy for this level of character ineptitude to work.

@holmbjerg4 ай бұрын
But something an American mass audiences would NOT accept. Online audience reviews made it clear, that breaking with horror conventions in the ending was unacceptable to especially Americans, who gave the original negative feedback because of the ending being as bleak as it was.
@Markunator4 ай бұрын
This ending is still plenty crazy, but far more satisfying and considerably less infuriating.
@kouaxiong70704 ай бұрын
@Markunator I didn't find it infuriating at all. I thought it perfectly punctuated the theme and title of the film. A great cautionary tale against social politeness. I'm open to seeing the change, but by changing it, like most USA remakes, it defeats the purpose of its original intent. I also assume that by changing it (or what I think was changed), their actions throughout the film made less sense.
@Markunator4 ай бұрын
@@kouaxiong7070 No, their actions didn’t make less sense at all. On the contrary, their actions in the movie’s climax made _far_ more sense! They didn’t feel incongruous with their actions prior to that at all. Also, themes cannot take precedent over writing. Nothing in the original movie’s final act made any sense in the slightest. At that point, politeness should have completely left the equation, yet the husband didn’t even bother telling his wife what he had found, for fuck’s sake!
@kouaxiong70704 ай бұрын
@Markunator I completely disagree. Perhaps we come from different cultures, but based solely on my experiences: the ending of the original was an honest and plausible outcome. My parents once made an innocuous offense to a societal elder and had to bear the brunt of the communities criticisms for an entire event. They could not defend themselves or explain. Otherwise, they could lose even more face for appearing to double down on the offense. And in the end, had to shake hands and thank everyone for coming to the event. Essentially, by the time the ending came, you were already there, so you just go with it. The film obviously is an exaggeration of this societal politeness, but that ending is very much rooted in truth. A perhaps more relatable film example is Cat Person, about how women let things happen to them due to not wanting to be viewed as difficult. Edit: I assume the change would make less sense, because if you're allowing so many transgressions up until the end, why didn't they leave earlier? But I'll have to see the actual changes.

The big advantage to living in the city for movie watching is coming back late you can be home in a jiffy without traffic if taking a cab or riding a bike. The subway though is a crapshoot. What keeps them from leaving in the original is their fear of offending and being impolite in social settings. Tolerating almost anything in an effort not to break the social norms is a trait that is probably specific to Northern European/Scandinavian culture (+ some Asian). So that doesn't translate too well to a culture built on rugged individualism. The original is also a commentary on modern masculinity, a theme that reoccur in other movies from the same director.

The American version has me hesitant that I’ll get a cookie cutter ending.
@iansmart41584 ай бұрын
Kristian views it as a bug, but I see it as a feature. The moments when you go, "Well why would you do that? Don't go in there!" in a horror movie, that's you interacting with the film and what's it's doing. It's playing you like a fiddle, purposely. I get it takes you out of the movie, but mainstream horror especially is meant to be a ride to engage you, not something to make you think deliberately about big ideas. And that's ok! MALIGNANT, one of my favorite horror movies of this decade, is all about that. About being so outrageous that it's constantly ripping you out of the reality of the movie to have a laugh. I get that may not be for everyone, but it is a fun component of these types of films!

This remake was not really good in my opinion. I am a big fan of 2022 original movie. In the original The pacing was better, the tension was far better and overal just a better written film. The movie is for the most part a beat by beat remake, except the end. The last half hour was indeed different, but also generic as hell. I disagree that horrormovie characters have to be dumb, for the movie plot to go on. The characters should be put into a position that make them THINK they can survive, but in reality (the viewer knows that) is quite impossible to escape from. Make it smart, but in the end also impossible to escape from. I was kinda bored by this film. This director can make a great horrormovie though (Eden Lake 2008) but this one was just average. James mcAvoy was great, but we already know that. This should be ROTTEN. No Fresh…. Btw the rating system is so dumb…. 7.2?? What is that 2? Why no 7.4 or 7.0?
