I think the biggest issue to bring awareness to is how you are NOT SUPPOSE TO TOUCH THE TURTLES AND SEALS. We have a lot of turtles and seals depending where you go, and the biggest thing that tourist don’t know is that it’s literally illegal to touch these two animals. They are protected because Hawaii is like a sanctuary for them. I don’t blame the tourist because we don’t have enough awareness on this topic up until recently.

We have visited several times. We always knew not to touch them, but I researched a lot prior to coming. And I’m a bit of a Dr Doolittle type. Rescues come to on their own often. Everywhere we went, and every island turtles and seals. ♥️ It was very touching to see these animals creatures.

People will try to touch wildlife no matter where they are. I live in Virginia near the Shenandoah national park and you would not believe how many stupid tourists I have seen get out of their car and try to touch a baby bear or take a picture of or with a bear. Like are you stupid?!! That animal will eat you alive especially if it’s a mama with her Cubs. Common sense seriously does not grow in everyone’s garden.

Show how much Hawaiians love all keiki. Everyone is the keiki’s auntie or uncle. If want want to highlight a local business, please ask the owners first. Sometimes they are doing just fine and don’t want the name advertised bringing tons of tourist, and driving away locals. Some businesses want the tourism and some do not even need it so it’s always good to ask. Most locals do not name the trails, beaches, and hikes they are on for the same reason. They show pics but won’t say the name. Show the kindness and how the culture is about being together as a family (blood related or not). Weekend hangouts with family and friends. Where your looks don’t matter but the company your with does. Enjoy hawaii, 6 months won’t be long enough 😊❤

Talk about the homelessness. How it’s such a big problem. How the government will make deals with other governments and ship off mainlanders to Oahu cuz we don’t have a harsh winter and then we have over population of homeless. Talk about how small mom and pop stores have to close because of inflation. Beaches are meant to be relaxing not taken over by people especially tourists and be touching turtles and seals. Or killing fishes. Because that’s our future. Water is so precious here. Be mindful of the water usage. Our keiki need the wai for their future.

I love and appreciate you! We live in Hawaii so our son could experience some part of the childhood I grew up with in Samoa/Polynesian/Aloha/Alofa culture. Increasing awareness, respect, kindness and generosity for our natural island beauty, the ocean animal and bird life and the people who live the day to day life in Hawaii is beautiful. I would also ask, when and as often as our visitors interact with our local natural beauty, people and families. Clean up after your selves and anyone who may have left trash. Give generous tips for your servers. Shop at local restaurants, food trucks, grocery markets, coffee shops etc. Likely, they work 2-3 jobs supporting whole families, college dreams. Compassion, and acknowledgement for those suffering with the lack of mental healthcare, PTSD and who may be unsheltered and uncared for. Write and highlight to the local leadership about the poverty and homelessness needs. When visitors tell leadership how it impacts future tourism when basic needs for people on the streets are not cared for. It shifts priorities and resources toward those in dire need. Mahalo and Aloha to you, your family and the service you provide in your work 🌺

@vaskylark
@vaskylark Жыл бұрын
You're not the only ones who loves the land. Most people save for a decade or more and their visit to Hawaii is a once in a lifetime trip. Then you get some cruel local who flips them the bird and tells them to go home on the first day of their honeymoon when they were just sitting at a stoplight. Then I get a call as their travel agent asking me why the locals are being mean to them at stoplights and when they were just holding hands walking down the beach. Not littering, not speeding, not doing ANYTHING but trying to enjoy their honeymoon. Then they have me pricing out French Polynesia because the wife is crying and the husband is beside himself because he planned the trip of a lifetime to be perfect but the locals seem to be so unfriendly. You Hawaiians are very hard to please and at some point people just say eff it and go elsewhere. Your islands aren't the only islands and once those travel dollars go away it's very hard to get them back. Now after the fires you really need tourism to help pay for rebuilding and yet what do I hear from Hawaiians? "Please don't come but give us your money instead."

Alaska is a paradise for many. Your not the only place with warm weather and lush tropical forests and volcanoes ever been to the Philippines? Nobody owns anything we are all on this planet together even if you live in the middle of the Pacific. You aint special! I hate it when people take themselves so seriously they think they are somehow above others or have more of a claim on land and its use. Someday none of us will be here and non of this will matter. If anything tell people to have less kids we don't need 22 and counting thats why everything is getting crowded, families with 3 or more kids!

I can see how much thought you are putting into this and continue to put into it, and I just want to say that’s amazing. I know you don’t want the focus or the positive attention to be on you personally so I’ll keep it brief as to not distract from your main message. I just think it’s really beautiful how you absolutely respect and are completely committed to the preservation and honoring of a culture that isn’t your own and isn’t something you’re trying to appropriate or get credit for. You can tell it comes from a genuine, selfless, and informed individual. Keep using your platform for good as much as you can! You’re not perfect, you’re human, and I’m sure there will be times where you miss the mark, or even just think you did, but the most important thing is that it’s all coming from positive, loving, and empathetic intentions. ❤ As for your question I’m not giving any specific answers, other than to keep up the good work and keep that same energy, simply because it’s not my culture or my home to speak on. I know how important it is to keep in touch with your culture and heritage though as a first generation immigrant to the US. It’s been even more important for me to stay connected to my roots now so I don’t lose touch with that part of myself just because I’m not surrounded by it 24/7 anymore. So, I have mad respect for what you’re doing. 🙂

Mahalo, I was very fortunate to live and work in Honolulu, Hawaii for 3 years and I was horrified at the amount of homeless people living in the streets and in parks. Not on main streets that tourists see but on the side streets when you take local buses. You never hear about that on the mainland. Mainlanders always think it's just a vacation spot. They don't realize that Islanders have to live and work there...like "normal" people. I learned to appreciate the culture of Hawaiians and respect their traditions. I always shopped local and when friends or family came to visit - I took them to local events and businesses. I hated to leave the island but it is ridiculously expensive. I just could not afford it anymore and I made $76,000 a year! So you can imagine how hard it is for the locals to actually live there! You are doing the right thing - sharing the real Hawaii. 😊

Your heart is pure and wonderful! I grew up in Hawaii, and each person on this comments page have mentioned much of what is important in Hawaii. The only item I would add is immerse them in the culture, the actual Polynesian culture. If you have daughters, have them take hula lessons- both ancient and modern, they will also learn about the language. Teach them the history of Hawaii, good and the bad things. If there is an opportunity, have them taught in the language. The app Duolingo has Hawaiian words they can start learning the meanings and pronunciations. Just immerse them in culture and there are some beautiful museums to visit, historical landmarks. Have them try the food- I go to Hawaii every year to recharge my love for Hawaiian food and culture! They can start learning now before the trip! Good luck and looking forward to seeing you blog on your stay.

Homelessness in Hawaii is a huge issue. I lived on Oahu, and the issue was rampant. Tents everywhere, on almost every corner. Something needs to be addressed and a resolution found to not only help the homeless but to keep them off the streets. Many of these people are mentally ill and either spit, hit, harass or steal from you. Hawaii is NOT the paradise the mainland believes it is.

That is very powerful and they will cherish these memories and hopefully do the same when they have keiki of their own one day. Government here is extremely corrupt- and you will see in government how lawmakers are creating a Hawaii without Hawaiians. How is that gonna workout ? There are not enough opportunities or options for local ppl in general but especially Hawaiians. Tourism is connected to almost everything here. The biggest problem is our wages are terrible. The biggest problem is our real estate and foreign ownership. Enjoy your time here ! Hopefully you folks can do this every year ! Aloha MM

As a Pacific Islander, I absolutely agree with you. People need to treat people in Hawaii like family. Show the respect and love to the locals and islands. Learn about the culture and family there.

It is like this for anyone who lives in a 'tourist destination'. I have lived in the Miami area for almost 20 years. Don't blame the tourists, blame local officials who can't get their act together to improve infrastructure.

Many are poor, living in small family homes with multiple families. It is expensive and the jobs are mostly service industry and don’t always pay well. They struggle.

Grew up in Kihei. We used to have ogo (seaweed) in an abundance. It's all gone now. Surf schools operate with so much clients trampling over all the rocks the the ogo grow on and all the sunscreen killing the ogo. I lived where you could just walk on the beach and pick ogo or even ba y opae, it was knee deep at times. Because there was a blding that serviced the tourist, they had someone come with a tractor to scrape up all the ogo, now the ogo didnt go back in the ocean to replenish. Now no ogo in Kihei.

Growing up on Maui and now living on Oahu, one of the hardest is how all these tourists come to enjoy our Hawaii, without respect to the aina and ppl, traffic (especially in Hana). Then they want to move here, especially the retirees, and raise the cost of homes, renting VROBs that the owners can pay the mortgage renting the home out for 1 wk. , now taking homes away from locals. To rent a 3bdrm home $3000-$4000 a month. Then they come because of our beauty then want to change the beauty they fell in love with (ask ur husband how beautiful it is now from Puunene to Kihei to what he saw growing up) to accommodate their mainland wants. That's when we say "Go home"

I'm not local, but I've lived on Kauai now over 4 years. What I've observed is the ignorance in both influencers AND tourists who are not there as influencers. It's just sad! People who will glorify being YOLO in areas that even the locals know are DANGEROUS to be accessing... & regardless of any warnings or signs given, people STILL ignore, then end up getting injured or killed & expecting the state to pay out for their ignorance... that NEEDS to STOP... You can see how lacking someone is in the realm of respect, just by how they act on the islands. Full transparency, I was once a tourist back in 2016, yet I've observed that common sense is still not that common, when it comes to basic manners & respects, including in a public or foreign arena... if you would not allow someone to enter your home with muddy shoes, then show respect in a cultural environment... & I can tell you, that the trauma with the Hawaiian culture runs DEEP... I feel most Hawaiian natives/locals would rather not have so many main landers here & the only reason why many are accepting or tolerating, is because the majority of the jobs available that pay their bills, are through tourism-based industries.

Thanks for asking: Our definition of Local is both born and raised on the islands. Hawaiians are only by blood. Locals love and respect people who love and respect locals, our home, our culture and our blended beliefs from before Statehood. We love givers with a generous heart and give unconditionally as we do. Always, always bring more than enough food to a party you've been invited to. We love good tasting foods!! Btw hot dogs and hamburgers are not good party foods to bring here. One last thing to know, never correct a generational island elder about sustainability practices who does not live on Oahu - dude.

Is that offensive in some way? She is acknowledging that as a non-Hawaiian she has a lot to learn and asking for help. She’s asking people with the knowledge to assist her in being accurate, helpful and responsible in the way that she is using her platform. If a person wants to be offended they will always find a way but it seems to me that this woman has good intentions and is really trying.

@M Durham you're right. The "you guys" is disrespectful. I don't think she meant it to be disrespectful. Its important to get to understand the culture of the island. You guys is kind of dismissive.

I know our culture in Colorado does not compare to Hawaiian culture, but I relate to some of the points you spoke of here. In my community we were taught to basically implement the meaning of this phrase “love thy neighbor like thy self” and to always respect the land, especially the mountains! It’s hard to see this way of life muddled and lost with the influx of new people to this state (tourist or new residents). I just try hard to outwardly live this way of life and hopefully be a decent example of my community 😅

The huge homeless problem in Honolulu is cataclysmic. The people from Guam live a nomadic existence in the bush and need support. Finally, the men suffer poor circulation in their legs at very young ages which doesn't get addressed.

Aloha I thank you for showing ppl around the world how Hawaiians and locals residence are being push out from our own land. I also feel that making a change for us Hawaiian to speak the truth about how that all became. How our kingdom was over thrown illegally it is so important for us Hawaiians to remember what our Kapuna’s installed in us. My tutu always told me to remember a teach my Keki’s the truth about us Hawaiians and to never forget so our ancestors will never be lost or forgotten. The problem for most Hawaiians is No change? like dropping the Hawaiians 50% for Hawaiian lands. An how our all’i tried to make it 1/8 percent. Now that never been forgotten.

I think that these things are everyday rules. Like trashing places, respect on roadways, giving to your local businesses ect. I believe we all should know these things in general. I mean I see humans that just clean their vehicles out in a parking lot, throwing their trash on the ground. I can't stand humans doing this. I don't want to live in trash. Then people just sitting in the road talking to a friend or yelling at someone on a sidewalk. This causes traffic backups or dangerous situations. I mean adults know basic everyday rules. They just choose to do the opposite which is horrible. Prayers and love to everyone 🙏 ❤.

I learned that the day to day life isn't any different than anywhere else. It's not what you see on TV. Also, I saw so many tourists act so entitled and treat the locals horribly. When I go, I live local, shop local, eat local and do anything I can to respect the culture.
