Holo the Hustler Episode 3 was always the litmus test I think, it becomes a lot more clear that economics are a key part of the story and it's not just a slice of life or romance series. Back in '08 some people dipped because it was too dialogue heavy, but most people completely fell in love with the show. You're in it for the long haul now!

Holo says move aside young man. Let me show you how a wise wolf negotiates a deal. Now, don't worry about how much money I spend, been hustling for centuries, I will make money for you just fine. But when a girl wants a compliment, you'd better remember to giver her a compliment lol

Can we talk about how much trust Lawrence put into Holo taking over the deal talks? The furs were all he had on his cart and he was really eager to do future business especially with this company. Then Lawrence's quickly picking up on her theatrics and playing along like its nothing but also Holo "asking" for Lawrence's approval of her little act before actually going on with it. It's amazing.

The difference here vs most romance stories in anime/manga is Holo IS the ideal ride or die girl. Holo is written as a real person with her strengths and her flaws, her charm and her charisma, but also her fears and her insecurities. She is the girl that lifts Lawrence up, and helps him become the best version of himself. He's got a good hart, and a sharp mind, but he has zero game. So even when at the start of the episode Holo could not have made it any more obvious if she tried that she was fishing for a compliment from Lawrence, he missed it completely and left her totally deflated. But then he made up for it by being a little bit protective and jealous when his sleazy friend is just completely going over the top with hitting on her later. Neither is a perfect character. Other romance anime/manga makes the lead female character flawlessly ideal if Shonen, and the lead male character flawlessly ideal if Shojo. Holo is the one that will always have your back, push you to be your best, and even take the lead and show the way when she needs to. But She's also just a girl who wants someone to reassure her. Lawrence wants to prove himself and become great at his profession, but he wants that so that he can find a partner who wants to settle down and build a happy life with him. The thing people love about these two characters is that the things that motivate them aren't some grandiose epic thing, they both are driven by the things every single human being alive is driven by. The desire to love and be loved.
