Spider-Man: Planet of the Symbiotes - Atop the Fourth Wall

ORIGINAL INFO: A terrifying story of bodily possession, invasion, and alien menaces! It’s a pity THAT story couldn’t be the plot for this one.
RUMINATIONS: So there was a brief moment at the beginning without any music or background noise, so since this was also the time I started saving videos in proper HD, I also took the opportunity of removing the background hiss, something I wouldn’t start doing for at least another 10 or 20 episodes.
This is a big one! The storyline finale is finally approaching and it would be difficult to pull off. I’ll get into more of that in the next episode, but this is the WHAM episode, the one where the Entity stands revealed, both in who it’s been hiding as AND its true identity. During this time, I had started using MusicLoops tracks and I had grabbed several tracks that I thought would be perfect for the reveal… plus it helps get around copyright issues, so I’m always grateful for that.
The revelation of the Entity’s identity had been there from the beginning, but the character association had come later, something I had thought up during the Vyce arc. People have speculated for how long he’s been possessed by the Entity and I try not to think about that kind of thing, myself, since it really was only important that he hasn’t been himself for some time. He’s been possessed since AT LEAST the KISS Comics review, though you could argue he’s been that way since the Vyce finale.
Many people figured out the poem, but half of them were only JOKING about their answer to it, so I was really worried that when the answer was revealed, they’d reject it - that it’d be too stupid, too silly, too esoteric, or just something that they couldn’t buy for a second. To a degree, I understand the trepidation there - it’s an admittedly silly concept, but really all the things done on this show are silly. The question is whether it’s CONVINCING. That being said, whatever it began its life as, it’s no longer that being - it’s why whenever people ask me about it, I always refer to it as the Entity and not its other name(s). And yes, I kind of condensed all the various forms into the one, since all the research done into the topic began with the one thing.
Some have criticized Liz suddenly walking off the way she did, but honestly it’s just my fault as a filmmaker that it’s not made clear. Liz was stepping in closer because she thought she saw something, 90s Kid obviously didn’t alert her of what was occurring, and she was snatched away in an instant. Most of them were. I had forgotten to get a shot from Liz from behind to show how quickly she could be taken, so I just worked with what I had. One other filmmaking thing that I wanted to do but couldn’t recreate was something I had done for the October trailer. I usually release a trailer (didn’t last year due to how busy I was aside from a Longbox one) for the October reviews since they’re usually a storyline in themselves and I just frankly love doing something spooky like that and get people all ramped up and excited for it. In the trailer, 90s Kid’s shadow just happened to recreate the Entity’s true silhouette. It was PERFECT. It was BEAUTIFUL. It… was something I couldn’t replicate during the reveal shot. I don’t know how I did the lighting, but I just couldn’t do it again and thus we lost that AWESOME shot. Ah, well, that’s life.

Agent Venom was a pretty good take on the whole "Fighting the Symbiotes animalistic urges while trying to do good" thing. After the first Venom and Carnage himself I think he's probably one of the better Symbiote characters from Spider-man.

A comment from the future: yeah, this backstory was entirely retconned out. Either the story is no longer considered cannon, or it’s been completely forgotten, but they’ve now created a completely different backstory to the symbiote in the pages of guardians of the galaxy and finally gave the race a damn name: they are the Klyntar, a race of liquidesque creatures with a hive mind. They were created originally as a malevolent army by a being as powerful as the Celestials, the god of the Symbiotes, Knull. One day, during a battle with Thor, their connection with knull’s mind was severed while being bonded to some ancient Nordic warriors, “tainting” them with the concepts of honour, nobility and protection. They rebelled against their master and imprisoned him. Ashamed of their past, they set out to protect peace within the universe by seeking out noble species to bond with to create an organization of noble warriors. When a member begins to display certain traits, they are somewhat severed from the hive mind.

Honestly I love the idea of Venom as an anti-hero it works with how Eddie Brock always wanted to report the facts and be a good guy before putting on the suit. So him deciding to try and help people is great development for a villain and if they had stuck to it with proper characterization and writing could have been a great long running series .

This storyline is particularly chilling when you realize 90's Kid is supposed to be a kid (Lewis apparently stated somewhere 90'S kid was actually in his early teens) and we never find out if those taken by the Entity are killed when they are taken or what. TL;DR: I find it really creepy that an outer god possessed a kid and we don't know how aware those taken are

This story is worse when you realize that the issue of Spiderman where Eddie does from cancer,get back to you on that, has the Symbiote say he was only using Brock as a means town end to survive and get back to Peter. He was only willing to join back when he realised Spiderman would never join back. And no, it wasn't as a result of these events he felt that way as they never allure to this plotline.

Interesting thing, there was a video game using the whole "Thousands of symbiotes" thing to much greater effect. It is called SpiderMan: Web of Shadows. It was a pretty good game, although I only played the DS version. But yeah, the whole city gets taken over by symbiotes. It has some limited branching paths two, depending on if you decided to use the regular suit or a symbiote.

I don't know if someone has mentioned this, but here's a fun fact about Venom. I've done some checking, and it turns out that the original intent was that, instead of Eddie Brock, the Venom symbiote was supposed to go from Spidey to a woman who had a grudge of her own against the web-slinger. Her story was to be that an inattentive cabbie, who was watching Spider-Man in action instead of the road, accidentally hit and killed the woman's husband, who was trying to flag the cabbie down. She was also pregnant at the time, but lost the child. However, Marvel discarded this idea because they felt that their readers wouldn't find a woman to be a credible enough threat to our favorite wall-crawler (never mind the fact that a woman with the Venom symbiote would be, by definition, physically STRONGER than Spidey, just like scrawny Cletus Kassidy is with the Carnage symbiote). As a result, it came to be something of a self-fulfilling prophecy in that Spidey doesn't have many memorable female villains. In fact, the only one I can think of is Black Cat (who is technically a knock-off of Catwoman). There's an actual article detailing the original intent for Venom online, but I don't know if KZbin would let me post a link.

There's no need to get hostile about it. Let's not forget that in comic book land, characters tend to make decisions based on things that make sense only to them. The woman was also pregnant and going into labor at the time, but the child ended up being stillborn. According to the article, the experience of losing both her husband and her child caused her to go insane and be institutionalized in the Ravencroft Institute. She would've eventually regained her sanity, but still blamed Spidey for the death of her husband and child. Plus, let's not forget that Eddie Brock's motivations for hating Spidey weren't exactly either. He hated the wall-crawler because of events that resulted from his own stupidity, and he had a "Never My Fault" thing going on as well.

I remember when I first saw this episode. The twist was freakin' amazing! I had to admit, I didn't really enjoy the storylines until this point because I had just started watching and I didn't really understand or care about what was happening. After the end, I HAD to go to see what happened and how everything fit together.

When Flash Thompson went to the Symbiote's homeworld and found out they were Klyntars I thought about this comic mini-series. Klyntars were aliens who bonded with other beings to survive and took the personalities of their hosts. Most Klyntars are peace loving creatures, but the Venom Klyntar was corrupted by its genocidal "first" host (its original host was a Kree, but after separating, the Venom Klyntar's memories were erased) who used it to slaughter most of the inhabitants on the continent, no matter how many good hosts it had, the rage and evil from the first host was inbedded in the Venom Klyntar's personality. The Klyntars then "purged" the evil from the Venom Klyntar, resetting it to its default personality, and the heroic Flash Thompson was able to be a superhero with a perfectly docile and obedient symbiote at his command. And then the writers blew all that up, stuck the symbiote with a gangster, turning it evil again, and then gave it back to Eddie Brock.

The Symbiote actually highjacked Peters body to let him rest, while the symbiote took on the role of Spiderman to protect the city ( However a more Violent Spidey, since it didn't know the difference between his and Spidey's version of being a super hero) Again, this is a new revelation in the comic series during the time of this post; but does kinda show it actually did like spidey and wanted to protect him.

While I have a hard time calling Venom one of my favorite Spider-Man villains, I do think he's one of the greatest characters in Spider-Man's ever-growing supporting cast. Part of that was due to marvel's push for Venom to be more of an anti-hero, which to be fair made for some interesting stories down the line. CARNAGE on the other hand, I think makes for one of, if not the most intimidating foes for NOT just Spider-Man, but ALL of Marvel comics due to being pure blunt brutal savagery and insanity all at once.

Actually Eddie was permanently bonded to the symbiote until he became Antivenom. It is proven in Sensational Spiderman: Back in Black , specifically in The Last Temptation of Eddie Brock in which it is shown that after selling the Symbiote, it still manifests within Brock's psyche, the symbiote even mentions that he is waiting Eddie to die, because the doctors will make Eddie an autopsy and set the symbiote free.

Capable of furious vengeance, ferocious, unwilling to back down from a fight, determined and strong in their convictions. Honorable, however. Reasonable, with time. Carnage is the Borg. Relentless. Can’t be reasoned with. Every confrontation comes with the threat of total Annihilation.

Unpopular opinion, but I actually prefer Venom as an anti-hero or hero than a villain. Flash Thompson’s Venom was so much more likable than Eddie Brock, and I love the idea of the symbiote itself undergoing a character arc that leads to it becoming a hero.

Why do I get the feeling someone at MARVEL mentioned Planet of the Symbiotes to Disney's execs as they were coming through the MARVEL Universe looking for stuff for the MCU and their MARVEL Animated shows, specifically anything related to Venom, and in doing so revealed that there was more then one Symbiote so now it's YOU GET A SYMBIOTE AND YOU GET A SYMBIOTE SYMBIOTES FOR EVERYONE!!!

Interestingly, I also love Venom, to the point where he is one of my favorite Spider-Man characters, but I prefer him as the Anti-hero "lethal protector", over being a straight villain. The writers don't always do it justice, but at his best potential Venom can be pretty much my favorite Anti-hero, much more likable than someone like Jason Todd and much more interesting than someone like Frank Castle.

24:05 Actual Lee: despite symbiosis commonly thought to mean when two organism have a relationship which is mutually beneficial this is more specifically known as mutualism, which along with parasitism (where one organism benefits at the expense of another) and commensalism (where one organism benefits and the other isn't affected at all) all fall under the general term of symbiosis which just describes any relationship between two organism, so it is still accurate to call it the planet of the symbiotes. Also, it doesn't matter what you think sounds better Linkara, symbiote is a real word with an established pronunciation!

I kinda disagree on that notion, while Venom might be more effective as a villain, I personally am all for it him being a hero or anti-hero. This may sound absurd but it sometimes sucks to see villains with designs better than the heroes get their ass kick on a daily bases and Venom is an example (Okay not entirely cause Spiderman is actually pretty cool looking) It's like in some backwards universe the Power Rangers was the villains and Rita Repulsa, yes Rita Repulsa as the hero. I'm sorry if that sounded ignorant it's just how I feel.

Gat720Dua As a huge Venom/Eddie Brock fan, I agree on this. Him becoming an anti-hero is far more logical than anyone is willing to give credit for (he's far less villainous and bloodthirsty than Deadpool and I find it hilarious how people trash anti-hero Brock while they are perfectly with Magneto as an anti-hero.

saidi7975 Well it makes sense that people are fine with an anti hero Magneto, in comparison Magneto has a far more sympathetic motivations than Eddie did as a villain. He was an extremist who wanted the best for mutant kind who are mistreated, in comparison Eddie was a guy who hated Spider-Man. It’s not really hard to see why people are fine with Magneto being an anti hero.

I also think Venom deserves the title of Arch-Enemy for Spiderman. Also, he should of been kept the way he was in his first appearance. Being a villain who sorely wants to kill Spider-Man and has the know-how to achieve it is way better then being an anti-hero. We have enough of those. I'm also not fond of the new "Venom".

I do think Flash Thompson Venom is awesome, or at least he was when he had his own solo comic, before being put in the GOTG and sidelined, but I agree that Venom needs to go back to basics. He was so much more compelling as a villain.

While I do prefer Venom as an enemy of Spider-Man, I do feel like Green Goblin earned his title as one of Spidey's archenemies, considering he was responsible for a LOT of bad things in Peter's life. Of course, given Norman Osborn's recent graduation to an enemy to the Avengers, I guess that does leave a spot open. Too bad Venom's too busy cycling between being a straight villain, an anti-hero, or whatever the writers want him to be, leaving Doctor Octopus as the only remaining member of the Big Three Spidey Villains as his nemesis. However, I also really like the idea that Venom, Goblin, and Doctor Octopus all collectively share the spot for Spider-Man's archenemy, in a similar vein as how The Cheetah, Ares, and Circe are generally considered Wonder Woman's three archenemies (even though in recent times Circe's been getting the edge out, because The New 52).

Holy crap. I'm a huge Spider-Man fan yet I've only read two comic books and watched all 5 movies plus some TV Shows. I do have a sort of "guide" to Spider-Man where it talks about stuff like this in a sort of general recap than actual detail. I really should go out and buy some of these comics despite how terrible they might be. In my own opinion, Venom is the best villain for Spidey and presents the biggest threat. Yeah the Green Goblin is great but, like you, I think Venom is a bigger threat. Carnage is good because of what he can do (using his symbiote to create actual weapons) but because he only uses it for villainy in general and not directly at Spider-Man makes him seem less threatening to Spider-Man.

Honestly everything that's said in this review, I can't help but agree. Instead of this feeling like a true creature feature horror thriller like John Carpenter's The Thing crossed with Invasion of the Body Snatchers, it's instead the Spiderman/Venom equivalent to Aliens. If I were the one writing this, it would start as any everyday Spider-Man outing, complete with him interacting with everyone around him. By the end Peter would notice that something isn't right with the way some people are acting. Then it's revealed that Ben Riley has a symbiote infecting him but not venom or any of the others Peter knows about and Ben explains desperately that it's a symbiote invasion. From then on, the following issues become a suspenseful mystery about who is infected and who isn't. To add tension, Peter could suspect or even pray for it not to be someone he loves like Mary Jane or Aunt May. Eventually, it's revealed that a chunk of both heroes, villains, and a mass of new York's population has been infected. As such it is now a battle for the sole of the city. Who will live and who will die?

The entity is not the result of the glitch, or causes the glitch, it is the embodiment of the glitch, a broken piece of earth's existence that was never built right. A glitch in the universe. THAT IS DOWNRIGHT WHOVIAN. Referencing a pokemon glitch as your villain... not so much. MissingNo has well-known "summoning" method, and as far as I know, Linkara has never gone up and down cinnabar island's coast in order to get infinite rare candies.

actually missingno as a world destroying villain actually does make sense. Yes Missingno has benefits, but it can royally fuck up your gamesave (not so much break it but nevertheless). Beyond that some of the glitches it causes range from terrifying (look up the skeleton glitch) to unnerving (being able to talk to your own duplicates). It is a pretty nasty little bug that if we deviate from the official statement and go by what's in the game has some pretty unnerving implications (essentially an incarnation of pure chaos).
