Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara takes a look at the origins of Captain America!

ORIGINAL INFO: The star spangled man with a plan! That plan? Punch every nazi in the face. Twice.
RUMINATIONS: Sorry to say I can’t include the ending bit of the episode where I play a clip from the First Avenger where we hear the awesometastic “Star-Spangled Man with a Plan.” I love that movie - it got Captain America down perfectly… and in a way it got Superman down perfectly, too. Sure, Cap is willing to kill people, but there’s an essential goodness, an inherent decency to both characters that makes them so likeable and wonderful. Anyone who says that being a good person or a “boy scout” makes them boring characters or the like clearly has a very limited field of what constitutes a good character, especially since it’s so damn hard to be a decent person when the rest of the world doesn’t play by the same rules.
Not much to say on the storyline front for this one - it’s just a sign to show that things may not be exactly as they appear on the Mechakara front… and that things will be coming to a major head for the next part of “His Blue Soul.”

Another fun fact: some Nazi thugs once called the offices of Kirby, threatening violence on him and dared him to meet them in the lobby. Kirby, having grown up in the lower East side of Manhattan, promptly rolled up his sleeves and went down to the lobby much to the horror of his coworkers. As expected, the thugs were not there by the time he arrived. Also served in WWII as an Army scout and witnessed the concentration camps firsthand. Makes Captain America something of a reverse autobiography

One of the coolest aspects of Captain America, is the irony of two Jewish men creating a comic where Nazis get their asses kicked from pillar to post by the same blonde-hair, blue-eyed ubermensch they were obsessed with. That’s just awesome.

What's even more awesome is that despite proclaiming their racial superiority, in real life, they got their asses handed by a man who actually fought in the war with a sword and longbow while playing bagpipes. His name: MadJack Churchill (not related to Winston Churchill FYI). The dude had used tactics, trickery, and badassery to defeat his enemies despite going up against incredible odds (for instance, one night, he managed to take 42 prisoners with only his sword and the help of just one officer). He survived and shrugged off injuries such as a shot through the neck and twice escaped when he was captured. I'm surprised that this guy hasn't yet got an adaptation of his incredible feats.

@@supernintendochalmers3385 I understand. The adventures of MadJack do sound like something you'd see in fictional stories. However, as the saying goes, truth is stranger than fiction. Lots of crazy things happened in real life. Many of them being things that would be considered bad writing, ludicrous, etc. But still, I'd be delighted to see an adaptation of MadJack Churchill (probably either a TV series, comic, or any medium that makes it easier to tell longer stories due to episodic/serial nature). He truly is an awe-inspiring person who loved to seek danger (so much that he was pissed when the war was over) and kick the asses of racial supremist assholes despite incredible odds.

It's nice to see Linkara can love a patriotic hero, but still acknowledge (and mock) America's flaws. And, yeah, early comic book characters frequently ignored continuity and claimed that other superheroes only existed in comic books, only to team-up with them later. Finally, I think Cap's secret identity was a top-grade military secret, and his direct superior as "Private Steve Rogers" didn't have high-enough clearance.

Heck there's an issue of Superman where Clark sees a Fleischer Superman cartoon episode in a theater with Lois. What's even more awesome is that in real life, there was a man named MadJack Churchill who fought in ww2 with a sword and longbow while playing bagpipes. Despite wielding archaic weaponry while commanding smaller forces, he managed to kick Nazi ass. In addition to balls of steel (hell, he was a lifetime seeker of danger), he survived multiple situations that could have gotten him killed (shot through the neck, blown by a frag grenade, etc.), twice escaped when captured, and took prisoners despite having a vastly inferior number of men. I'm surprised that this man has not yet received an adaptation of his life of adventures and badassery.

My favorite military mascot was an exiled Polish unit who adopted a BEAR. I'm not joking. It's interesting how afraid of saboteurs the US was. The closest the Nazis got was a lot of propaganda that made Americans isolationist and so stayed out for two years, and submarine warfare meant to terrorize the merchant marine into staying into port. This fear also applied to Japan-they expected Pearl Harbor to be attacked by the Japanese Americans in Hawaii, never dreaming that the immigrants were patriotic and than the Imperial Navy would attack instead.

For some context, the bear in question was a Syrian Brown Bear, and his name was Wojtek. He was adopted as a cub by Polish soldiers and enlisted as a Private so the army would have to pay for his food. He enjoyed beer, cigarettes, playing with his buddies, helping them carry artillery shells (he was very good at this), and legend has it he pulled a Captain America (Captain Poland?) by catching and terrifying a Nazi spy who was not expecting the bear. @Cody Hines - Quick correction; the sniper you're talking about was actually Finnish. All the other stories about him are true. Especially the one about surviving an explosive bullet to the face and sniping the guy who shot him.

Actually Rafko's plan to kill high ranking army officers would actually be a pretty big problem for the US. If you want an example, one of the problems the Soviets had in the early.days of the war was that Stalin had purged so many officers he saw as disloyal they had large holes in the command structure. And even as they filled them, the new officers where often less experienced as well as needing their old post to be filled, which just started a whole cycle.

Actually Linkara, Military Mascots are a thing although: 1. They were usually animals and not children, so the comic is wrong in that regard; and 2.They usually stayed back at base and helped raise morale between battles not during them. Although there are examples of mascots breaking that rule; in WWI a dog in the American Army was able to detect when people were gonna be gassed, saving lives. In another example, in WWII this time, a Bear with the Polish Army delivered artillery to gunners and marched with the 22nd Artillery Supply Company.

A artillery caring bear is the most Slavic thing i ever heard. The only thing that would make this whole story even more slavic is that the bear was drunk on vodka while he carried the weapons without the safety on.

As for the review of his very first appearance, it's defiantly My favorite out ALL the secret origins reviews. Covering the history that led up to Caps creation as well as fun facts and details throughout. I especially love how Lewis highlights his nobility and decency which are the main reasons for my love of the character. This comic is, after all one of the greatest for not just the golden age but for ALL TIME!!!

Captain America! Hell Yeah! He's my favorite Avenger in the MCU. It's nice to see someone else like him as much as I do. Why do I like him? Chris Evans said it once in an interview, that he's, "Good for the sake of good, and just everything I want to be as a man." THATS WHY! That is why I LOVE CAPTAIN FREAKING AMERICA!!!
