As a biologist that used to work in a spider lab, I can say that Jenny definitely gives off the same weird energy as the entomologists I worked with
@allisonhomiak23364 жыл бұрын
I can second that. Entomologists have a very strong weird energy. I'd like to think it's a fun, quirky kind of weird. Also, I have a spider question, since I don't have a lot of experience in that area. Jenny mentioned "spiders on corkboard" in this video. Is there a situation where pinning a spider (to foam, not literal cork) would be preferable to putting it in ethanol?
@seaspinster32464 жыл бұрын
Allison Homiak From what I understand and have seen, putting a spider on display not in ethanol only really happens when either it is a complete reconstruction not made of spider parts or if the abdomen of the spider is removed cause that part tends to rot and can’t be preserved well outside of an ethanol solution. Most of the times spiders have to be kept as wet specimens cause they tend to famously shrivel up when they die, which isn’t great for pinning. That’s what I’ve heard on the subject anyway👍
@allisonhomiak23364 жыл бұрын
@@seaspinster3246 Thanks. I wasn't sure if there was some kind of exception to that rule, but the reconstruction thing makes more sense. Putting a pin through the cephalothorax seems pretty destructive for a research specimen, even ignoring the dehydration issue. But then again, I've seen some pretty bizarre choices in specimen preservation (looking at you, house centipede with a million pins holding up each of your legs), so I didn't want to risk missing an opportunity to learn something, you know?
@nothankyouthanksforasking4 жыл бұрын
She talked about that in a ramble video. She wanted to become a entomologist as a kid but changed her mind when her class had some kind of career day and entomologists at a university told her that they work with dead specimens and also scorpions.
@OlleLindestad4 жыл бұрын
Also entomologist here. I was surprised to hear about the "spiders on corkboards" thing because my impression is that spiders can't be pinned the way insects can because they fall apart as they dry. When we worked with spiders in class, we always just used ethanol. But maybe people preserve the spiders and then pin them?

Just here to say that as an entomologist, most of what we do looks at insects as they live, as do arachnologists. The pinned insects are just used to represent diversity, most of what we do is in the field with love bugs
@OriginalDonutposse2 жыл бұрын
I like the Freudian slip of “love bugs” for “live bugs” there. Bird person here but I love live birds and cringe at the thought of people killing specimens to draw and document them (a la Audubon - most of his drawings are from birds he captured and/or killed). I mean, I’ve picked up a few dead birds in order to identify them and to save for a study on a then-prevalent outbreak. And I get banding and releasing. But I didn’t even like killing chicks to feed the snakes at the zoo I worked at. Thanks for pointing out the difference between an entomologist and an arachnologist. I wanted to, but didn’t want to belabor the point or be rude.

That OK Corral show was one of the last things I ever did with my father, at the end of 2019. The whole family went there during the holidays, and we took a bunch of old-timey pictures together. Then we went to see the show. The Doc Holliday actor had the same cane I legit use to walk with. He seemed awkwardly unsure of what to make of that. When I held my cane forward to show him it was the same one, he nervously clacked the knob of his into mine, like some kind of disability fist bump. Good times. A few days later, January 1, 2020, my father passed away. It's weird and good that a pit stop in Jenny's spider quest reaffirmed those memories. I'm oddly grateful. So, thank you.

As a European watching this I feel a bit strange in realising how stereotypically 'American' a lot of the USA is. The love of western things, the weirdly specific themed roadside attractions, the 'we love freedom' bits, and associating that with certain kinds of behaviour. Like, I have seen it in media, but that it's real? Maybe I am weird. I really love the road trip content, and I used to have a big pillow with aragon embroidered on it, so I do appreciate the content!

Yeah oddly enough real Americans love real American values. And since the wild west was probably the biggest single cultural event in American history and is truly and wholey American, obviously we're going to like that thing we did and invented. We also like personal freedoms and liberties, at any cost. No matter the risk, even if people get hurt because we'd rather people get hurt while exercising free spirited independence than get restricted(And thus hurt) by government intervention. Pretty much all the places in America not completely washed out and blended with foreigners to the point theyre not even Americans anymore(Nothing against those people, just saying, theyre not red blooded Americans, theyre Mexicans and Russians and Japanese and Iranians, ect, not the same as an American family with 6 generations of American history) are going to be huge into all those American cultural norms. Southern hospitality. Loving guns. Wanting true freedom at any cost. Rugged individualism. And because America is such a young country and our mass expansion was noticably recent, the idea of having boomtowns and temporary hot spots show up along the road and become attractions is kinda a thing in our culture as well. When us white Americans got here, this was 90% unpopulated, empty land. There wernt very many natives here so a crap load of that expansionism was into wild unspoiled unknown. Naturally caused such landmarks to arise as civilization was brought to empty, beautiful landscapes. We really are like that, when you get out to the small towns and heartland of America. Obviously if you go to some big city its just a collection of 'everyone' like any city anywhere in the world. Kinda feel bad for peopel who go to foreign countries and then just visit cities, since you cant understand a nation's culture if you dont go to the heart of it, the small towns, the places where the culture is still preserved. If I go to Africa to learn how Africans live, I dont want to be in Capetown, I want to be in some small white farmer's ranch or off in a traditional village.

In a perfect world, yes, you wouldn’t have to study any other insects. But the reality is when you study any form of invertebrate zoology (or even just general ecology like I am for that matter) you will have to take entomology, and almost definitely you will have to hunt and pin insects. Fun fact tho: you can’t pin most spiders bc their exoskeleton is too fragile and will deteriorate exposed to air, so most all spiders are kept in alcohol :)

Things I vibe with in this video: 1. Love of FAO Schwartz 2. Hatred of minimalism as a style 3. The ironic Beastly wallet 4. The spider playlist on the entire trip to Arizona 5. The jingoistic lingerie 6. Trump building a wall around the dystopian Flintstones town. 7. The only guy in the vicinity mansplaining Flintstones 🤣🤣🤣 8. The Leaning Tower of Betty 9. A big spider that's actually really cute!! Why would kids be scared of that one? 10. Just plopping the giant spider down at the bar 11. TAYLOR SWIFT 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 12. The underrated "whites of his eyes" joke 13. The promise of more (but not often) content like this with more subscribers.

I can’t believe that in an abandoned theme park in the middle of nowhere in the middle of a pandemic there’s STILL a man calling any woman he sees a fake fan of something

"Ah, but you can't *prove* beyond a reasonable doubt that it was a sexism thing! Just like you can't *prove* the cops doing horrible things are racist!" - A bunch of people who are probably so bad at pattern recognition they see tartan and tell you your clothes have some stains on them.

Wait, you really can't believe it? As a man, I think you aren't a real connoisseur of bizarre fandom gatekeepers.

God, the "I stand for the flag, I kneel for the fallen" negligee just made me laugh for a whole entire minute.

Imagine working at a hotel's bar, normal evening, but then Jenny Nicholson walks in, proceeds to tell you she had just acquired a giant spider plush, goes to get said plush and sits it down at the bar

The way Jenny finds so much joy in everything is what makes her channel my go-to when I'm feeling depressed
