So nice to see you diving into the metal side of music, so much talent. I would still love to see your reaction to Brittney Slayes of Unleash the Archers. She has an amazing range, great lows in songs like "Northwest Passage", and amazing highs like in "Tonight We Ride". She also does a lot of interviews with reactors, like the Charismatic Voice. They are such a talented band, and I think you would really enjoy something new. Love all your reactions as always, keep up the great work!

I like Courtney a lot, and this one take recording might be the coolest thing I've heard from her. I liked the music video version too, in that one for the last bit she didn't do the clean-scream-clean switchups like that though. When I saw the one take I was blown away. It's one thing to switch from verse to chorus or whatever, but she does it from word to word in the same phrase. Amazing control.

The Studio/Video version would be difficult to sing live due to the layering of the end part, she changed it to the flips to keep the impact but make it easier to preform live (from a technical side not a singing side).

Great reaction and analysis. Courtney's an interesting metal vocalist because she can allow some true fold phonation into her harsh vocals without hurting her voice, which is quite tricky to do safely. It lets her play on the edge between clean, distorted, and fully harsh vocals in a fairly unique way, as well as being able to instantly shift between the three. As you mentioned, she also uses lots of variety in her vocals, and she does it in a way that aids storytelling. One thing that's not always obvious about her singing is that she places a big emphasis on rhythm in her vocals, and vocals seem to have a deliberate rhythmic relationship to the other instruments. Also going to second the suggestion for Unleash the Archers, as Brittney Slayes is an extraordinarily talented vocalist. Tonight We Ride is good if you want to get a sense of her insane range and power.

I discovered Spiritbox at about the same time as Jinjer and I love both bands. Even though I've been a musician since I was a kid and have played in multiple bands in several genres, I was never into metal music with scream/growl harsh vocals until I discovered Jinjer and Spiritbox, which is not only due to the incredible vocals of Courtney and Tatiana, but also the interesting, sophisticated and varied songwriting and fantastic musicianship of both bands. Tatiana and Courtney both have the ability to instantly transition back and forth from their beautiful clean singing voices to powerful harsh vocals. Both of them have great harsh vocals, but I tend to prefer Tatiana's because it's power and deep tone.

The band is from Victoria, BC, Canada. Formed by Courtney LaPlante and her husband ,guitarist Mike Stringer, in 2017 after parting ways with their former band Iwrestledabearonce. Thanks for checking them out. Most of their songs are mixed harsh and clean vocals, the amount of one or the other varies somewhat. If you would like more, try Rule of Nines, Holy Roller, Constance, Blessed Be, or Rotoscope.

These new-ish hybrid vocalists are & have been breaking & gaining ground. They're setting new bars to what is considered great vocal skill. And female vocalists are leading the charge. Ever since I saw this vid of Courtney flipping between clean and harsh vocals in the same words (first beakdown)... Litarally splitting sylabols, I was hooked! I've tryed to emulate this, but it's so hard!! Going from clean to harsh quickly is relativley easy, I recon I got that down. But going from harsh to clean in the next sylabol... Yeah thats just silly.

To me, it sounds like she is not so much flipping between the true and false folds, as much as engaging both a little on those more clean notes. Which ever it is, you have to have total control to not hurt yourself. And you can tell she's not hurting herself because she can sing the clean sections so well. I am still a bit new to harsh vocals myself, but it is clear to me that most tend to make it and extension of a more clean technique. They still have to warm, up, take care of their voice, and do most everything you do when you sing...they then just go a little further into a different sound. I find this less true in the people who just yell, but she is one of those few who really have mastered the voice to a whole new level. Others I have heard who master harsh vocals are Tatiana Shmailyuk from the band Jinjer, and Will Ramos from Lorna Shore...though usually he just does harsh vocals only, but I have heard him sing cleanly a few time, but he's probably the best harsh vocalist out there, as far as different sounds and styles of what he can do. It may be more advanced than you are ready for, but he's one you should work into someday. If you did go that rout I would suggest his "And I Return to Nothingness" One Take Playthrough it is a good beginning song to start with with no real effects added, just his skill.

Jennifer! Ok a day late again but I had a chili cook-off party to prepare for and attend yesterday. Hmm another metal singer. Well she has a nice voice outside of the guttural rasp from hell sound. Interesting ... she can flip from one word to the next. "This could ALL(distorted) BE (clean) YOURS (distorted). Not heard that type of quick change before though my exposure to metal is admittedly limited. Blue hair ... hey that's what you could do for your 100K celebration! Color your hair blue! Great reaction, Jen! It IS nice to hear a solo vocal again. And what a vocal. Courtney LaPlante's screams belong in their own category. I love Tati from Jinjer as a mistress of the metal growl, but Courtney's screams feel more natural, as though she's having a fight with an intimate friend. She uses them very effectively and tastefully. Spiritbox are all their own; you might appreciate their song Rule Of Nines. Here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIeniYd8mqyMrcU

The weird thing about Courtney is that, while what she is doing is definitely a false-fold scream, she makes it sound like a genuine scream of rage. If you'd like to see another example of this, check out Say Cheese, Cue, or Spit by Poppy. Now there's a girl who sounds in real distress - no, not distress, more like anguish - when she screams. Right down to the voice crack at the end.

Don't worry, Jen, Courtney'll clear your sinuses. I have to say, though, this version is *considerably* breathier than the studio version. I kinda like it. Yes, Courtney's special talent is her ability to switch from true vocal folds to false and back again, all in the same breath. If you want to see how far she can go, try Holy Roller next. Or the vocal cover by Will Ramos, but I'm not entirely sure you're ready for that just yet. Not until you do some Lorna Shore, anyways. And if you want a REAL challenge, well, there's always Darko US... You *will* be spoiled by metal, Jen. One of us One of us

The break in her voice wasn't really purposeful; I've read that the day she did these, she was battling a little bit of a cold. Even those these say 'one take', she did more than one take this day. However, the one that was chosen had no editing in it, it was a full take.

So many react videos give here credit (where its definitely due) of being able to transition from melodic singing into her screams. But you're the first react video I have seen that gives her credit for the most difficult thing that she does absolutely seamlessly in going back into the melodic FROM her screams. And she does it without skipping a beat. It's truly incredible. Great review.
