A lot of people don't know how to use the docking lines and the engines as a leverage to maneuver the boat and that was a great demostration right there.

A few things may complicate this in a privately owned yacht. Pivoting on the bow is hard on paint, fiberglass and the pocketbook. Anchor and anchor pulpit and pilings don’t mix. The step up on most pointed bows with anchor overhang and God forbid it’s a Kady Krogen…. You get the idea.

I'd like to see how he would come back to the same dock position under the current wind/current conditions. Possibly in a very similar manner using his engines in reverse to slow his drift towards the dock and let the bow touch first?

He made it look pretty easy when in reality-that big enclosed passenger area acts like a sail in that wind.The wind can push it a lot as it did near the end.your suggestion about saying left in the fairway was right and he shoulda stayed a little more left in that wind/tide situation.He still made it look like he knew what he was doing though.A bit of speed/power was necessary there even though you have to watch your wake in a Marina- going too slow could get you in trouble when that wind catches you.

You're right on all accounts. I believe he allowed the wind to move the boat a little to the right before making the left turn at the end of the fairway. That turn is kinda tight with boats docked on the face docks. This Captain does this all the time, he is a pro!

@@AskCaptainChris It's still on my boat. I actually started it yesterday and let it run for about 15 minutes. I only like maybe 2 days having the inside finished. Need to wire up the new LED taillights. Going to take a few days off Memorial day weekend and try to finish up. It ran great. I put a little extra oil in because it hasn't been started in a while smoked up the neighborhood 😅

Captain Chris, have you ever tried to spring off a dock but without using a spring line? It's more of a pivot off the dock using your bow against the dock as the pivot point. This when considering solo undocking against the wind where you can't operate a spring line.

I've done a lot of creative docking and casting off. Whatever works and does no damage to my boat or others.

Impressive, the same could have been done with single engine and rudder but not as easily. The flat front aluminum bows helped. An overhanging fiberglass bow would have been harder no to cause hull damage , never the less a , really good video of ‘springing’ off.

I agree, an excellent example of "Spring Off" to back away from the dock.

Why not back out with engines hard to port from the get go? That would keep the bow off the dock.

That was the best method for the wind and tidal current conditions at the moment.

Ideally would the length of the spring line and position of the dock cleat keep the bow off the dock?

Ideally. But I believe I mentioned that there was a cross current and cross wind. Not ideal.
