Something interesting, the Silurian and Ordovician are both divided into seven ages. So with 16 Crucible knights, seven serving under each of the two named commanders, we'd have 16 name sources. Silurian: Ludfordian, Gorstian, Homerian, Sheinwoodian, Telychian, Aeronian, and Rhuddanian. Ordovician: Hirnantian, Katian, Sandbian, Darriwilian, Dapingian, Floian, and Tremadocian.

There is only one issue with this that i've discovered. There are not 7 of each knight order. Through the video, you can count them as all of the knights are shown. There are 9 Axe Knights and their commander Ordovis and 5 Tree Knights and their commander Siluria. While it's possible these name sources still would be quite likely, the division of them is off for this to be completely accurate, as this means we have a total of 10 knights in Axe regalia and only 6 in Tree regalia, commanders included. The other, as Golden Lost indicated, is that the name Darriwil has already been used, specifically by the Bloodhound Knight being hunted by Blaidd when we first meet him. Though two knights having the same name isn't impossible, it makes it less likely this is how all of the knights were named

I can safely say that, as a paladin build, these gave me far more trouble than the Godskin Duo. I eventually resorted to using Lhutel to distract Ordovis while I took out the Tree Knight.

Once I figured out just how much more aggressive Ordovis was than the Tree knight it just turned into running away until I had Ordovis alone. It was pretty simple at that point but it admittedly took me quite a few failed strategies before I realized that.

11:37 I feel like these two Crucible Knights in the Royal Capital are there for Morgott rather than Marika considering their loyalty to Godfrey, Morgott’s relation to Godfrey & his own omen blood. All of which we know they would value more than anything Marika embraced or offered them. Not to mention their love for the Erdtree as a growing entity, which Morgott also deeply cherishes as we know.

The history of the Crucible Knights is one of those few things that makes me really chafe against the limitations of this game and this genre in a good way. I so desperately want to be some way of interacting with the Knights other than combat. They are just such an interesting faction and I need talk to these guys.

Fr, in my 1st playthrough I couldn't help but be fascinated by these guys, to the point when the moment I got my hands on their armor and weapons, I just HAD to play with 'em (had a str/holy faith built too so that made it all the more tempting) , and Ordovis's greatsword + Siluria's Tree became my main set-up for the last 3rd of the game. Wasn't OP, but it was definitely solid & reliable, and most importantly it was fun. How I wished there was a quest where you get to talk to one....

Diving further into the story of Godfrey and his crucible Knights, the British celtic inspiration is abundant. To add to this, the only named crucible knights, Ordovis and Siluria, are named after celtic tribes of Britain, specifically in the Welsh borders, the Ordovices and the Silures.

The Gilded Greatshield dropped by Godrick's knights also mentions primordial red-gold. "The red tinge in the gold coat mirrors the primordial matter that became the Erdtree. The color of homeward yearning." It's almost definitely just symbolic since Godrick is obsessed with the gold of the Erdtree and him being of the royal lineage, and it doesn't boost Crucible incantations like the Crucible Knights' armor does. Just thought it was worth sharing, since you said it wasn't mentioned anywhere else at 14:12

Something also interesting is the named crucible knights are also names of Celtic tribes that lived in Roman Brittan. Considering Godfrey has King Arthur and Celtic inspirations it makes sense.

Something to note, I believe the Crucible Knights are very much more connected to the Misbegotten than previously thought. The Winged Misbegotten ashes say: "A spirit with the aspect of wings which takes flight to loose arrows from its bow. The misbegotten are held to be a punishment for making contact with the Crucible, and from birth they are treated as slaves, or worse." This tells us two things: The Misbegotten both made contact with the Crucible, and actively practice their incantations. (Aspects of the Crucible: Wings is mentioned, which doesn't exist for players, but explains how the misbegotten fly) Which could tell us that either the Misbegotten and Crucible Knights found friendship in their common mistreatment post-Godfrey, or were actively working together in the days of the Crucible.

I only can see the similarities of how the Primordial Crucible promotes devolution-power of beasts and life-and grafting is of a similar nature to the intense mutations on creatures related to the Primordial Crucible; both shunned due to the impure bodies they exist with. Besides that, I don’t see how else they could be related.

I think we actually see the crucibles primordial goo, in the elden beast fight that liquid on the ground. It would make sense as the golden order often absorbs and hide heretical things such as flame, and briar. The goo may be no different

I have a theory that they served Placidusax but after the Dragon War they switched over to the Golden Order and kept thier Crucible powers. It wouldn't make sense for them to be allowed to learn Crucible Incantations with the Golden Order because, First who could teach them? They're the only ones who use those incantations. And Second the Golden Order hates the Crucible So why would they learn them knowing that they hate it ? I feel like Marika saw use them after the Dragon War and Conviced them to join her And Gave them to Godfrey, And that the Crucible Knight in Farum Azula looking at the dragon is Possibly mourning his dead master. Also they Have wings, horns and spit fire like they're immitading the dragons.

I really enjoyed this detailed breakdown of the knights. I listened to it as I re -explored the snowfields, and it occured to me that I had never realized there were 2 units comprising the knights or that their numbers were so small (working with the assumption that the closed beta info is cannon, which I think is fine). Thank you again for your lore dives and the effort you and the community has put into discovering the history of the lands between. It's the most fascinating world I've played in in a long time.

That is interesting. Also I believe you are right in the golden light of the Erdtree being an abnormality. The Erdtree feeds on the souls on the Lands Between which accounts for the gold colour. Also I believe the Erdtree grows IN the crucible itself which is how the souls feed the Outer Will via the Erdtree.

After playing the DLC: By the names of each Crucible knight set, I think they really do take inspiration from the Historical period of earth. Silurian Period (Siluria) Ordovician Period (Ordovis) Devonian Period (Devonia) maybe in the future we'll also get the Cambrian, Permian and more lmao

I think it's significant that the crucible knights come in two flavors, tree and axe, as this may indicate to whom they owe their allegiance to. The axe is the symbol of Godfrey and this might explain why it is the axe knights that tend to be serving other masters in rebellion of the Erdtree or indifferent to it. Conversely, the tree is the symbol of Marika (and her mightiest weapon, if Mountaintop of the Giants is any indication) which might indicate that the tree knights served her, albeit under the direction of Godfrey. This would help explain why several of them remain to protect Leyndell while no axe knights do as it wouldn't have been their master, merely their boss, who was exiled in favor of Radagon.

I consider Elmer the Briar a 17th Crucible Knight cause his sword, Regalia of Eochaid, reads he comes from some land called "Eochaid". I believe the crucible knights, or at leats their armors, weapons and figthing styles are native to Eochaid.

i just realized why the crucible knight sword said the red tinted gold of the erd tree is the true color of the erd tree and the briliant gold isnt, is because when the erdtree and the elden ring was complete it had the rune of death which had a red color to it so when marika removed the rune of death from the elden ring the red tint disappeared and became a brilliant pure gold color

Managed to beat the crucible knight duo at around level 80 thanks to a +10 dark moon greatsword, the projectiles only did around 470 damage but after molesting the spear guy the moment the named one got 10 meters away I was able to calmly and easily kill the second one

As far as I know, all information we have about Placidusax is that he exiled himself beyond time after his god fled
