I've worked backstage at over a dozen orchestra backed metal concerts so far. I can confirm that from talking to the orchestra members are almost universally having a hell of a time doing these kinds of concerts. For some because they get to play in front of gigantic crowds, for others because Metal is probably THE music genre that lends itself to being orchestrated best.

I get mildly annoyed when people request extreme metal bands for vocal coach reactions, because unless they're Melissa Cross, they mostly don't understand the mechanisms/complexities for the different harsh vocal styles so can't really give a critique/breakdown of what's going on vocally, good or bad...which is the whole point of the vocal coach reaction series Luckily this had a mix of DB's usual harsh vocals and a guest's amazing vocals so there was something for you to comment on at least As a metalhead, there's plenty of metal bands I'd love to suggest for you to hear just because I want to spread the metal love, but not necessarily ones I want a reaction/breakdown from a vocal coach for
@SSTVocalCoach4 жыл бұрын
I totally get where you're coming from, but from my viewpoint, i'm LOVING getting these suggestions. Thanks for the disclaimer at the beginning... although something tells me if any DB fan arrived here, you’ll get immediately recommended something from Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and I’ll get punched for a single from less glorious days. Also, the change of your face expression was priceless 😂 Now, on to the details, Captain Sam :P Growl is one thing. Another thing is Agnete Kjølsrud (the guest lady) who is actually an alt-/punk rock singer and she was utilised in lots of different stuff (compare Get Jinxed for instance or her material from Djerv). One last thing - I can GUARANTEE you that not all of the choir singers/musicians were thrilled. At least that’s my impression. Back in the days, when such marriage (metal + orchestra) wasn’t that popular, Therion decided to record Vovin without showing the session musicians what they contributed towards. Apparently the reactions - once they listened to everything - were, delicately saying, mixed haha Anyway, thanks! Getting a message saying you decided to record an impression was a nice birthday gift ;) And glad you enjoyed it!

This drummer is incredible? He's good, but they've had godlike drummers prior to him. Their 2001 album with Nick Barker has the most complex and lightning fast drums of their entire discography. Not many drummers can correctly play their song "Indoctrination" for example (not even the drummer from this video, because I saw him attempt it with my own eyes in Toronto (Canada) and he played it differently). There's so much cymbal work and lots of crazy fills. People have described his drumming as "surgical" due to the precision.
