By the end of Star Trek VI, I think Spock had become the ideal Vulcan, able to perfectly balance logic and emotion

The scene with the Vulcan children taunting Spock in the 2009 Star Trek film was a direct lift from the animated series episode by DC Fontana “Yesteryear” . She was very much upset by that, not even getting invited to the Premier. When I tried to interview her about it she refused to talk about it.

Actually Spock wasn't the only young Vulcan to show emotion. Bullying is a result of wanting to feel superior and/or not wanting to feel inferior, either way it's a show of emotion and those boys should have been admonished for their showing of emotion while they were trying to lord it over the half human Spock. There! I finally found a place to point out the character flaws of those three boys. After all it seems that nobody else has noticed it, but then I guess it takes a different mix of thought ability and being the victim of bullies.
@GeekFilterNet

@@arnoldfossman1701 True, but in a 24 min cartoon in 1973, even written by Dorothy, they were never going to delve into the emotional lives of 3 extras or complicate the story by also explaining why they too should be punished. We did however mention that on numerous podcasts and talked with William Simpson (voice of young Spock) about the unfair judgement, likely because of the negative view of Sarek and Amanda's relationship. Also remember, Vulcans have to learn to suppress their emotions and those were little kids. Not excusing them, but there is a reason why they aren't as controlled as adults.

To be fair, Vulcan “logic” isn’t always logical. It’s a projected version of our concept of “logical” rather than true logic. Take for instance T’pol’s insistence that the Vulcan Science Academy has stated that time travel is impossible. No truly logical society would ever make such a statement because they would inherently recognize the limits of their knowledge and that a privileged epistemological viewpoint from which to make determinations on what is “true” is impossible. In other words they would recognize that they don’t have god-like omniscience to know for sure if time travel is “impossible” or not. They would simply say they’ve found no evidence for its existence and do not know for sure if it’s possible or not. Some of the ideas that we assume are logical are anything but because we’re so conditioned to our viewpoint that we cannot see outside of it.

Untrue. There has been cases of Vulcans abandoning logic, even those without half human heritage. Case and point: Sarek marrying Amanda, even if he claimed it was the “logical” thing to do, the reality is he loved her. Plus you also have to consider Ponn Farr, which would make even the most logical Vulcan abandon Surak’s teachings
@donnamorrell1895
@donnamorrell1895 Жыл бұрын
@@L1z43vr "Ponn Farr" wasn't that a chemical imbalance in vulcans, so obviously not a choice to abandon logic, there are other neurological problems that afflict vulcans, Such as what Sarek died off, or What Tuvok went through that would also cause them to abandon logic, Yes, Sarek married a Human, had a half human/ half vulcan child ie, spock, but sometime it is necessary for Vulcans to abandon logic, just because they are Vulcan, and they are logical thinkers doesn't always mean the Logical way is the best course of action, also my last comment was mostly about Spock being half human, so he can abandon logic for his human gut feelings, or human intuition.

I disagree. Leonard Nimoy was the architect that made the character what he was. It was his choices in how to play Spock that led to what we know. You can't take a copy of a Da Vinci and say it is as good as the original no matter how technically similar it is because Da Vinci was the creator, not an imitator. I still think both of the others did well, and I especially like how Ethan Peck plays the role now but still, it's the template Nimoy refined they are working with. Plus, Nimoy's love of the fans and the character is what saved Trek from oblivion so he gets points there too with me.

The Vulcans taught themselves logic to overcome their emotions, that could have destroyed their civilisation. The Romulans were an offshoot from the Vulcan race, who chose the other way....warlike ways. Spock attempted to reunite both races, because he ultimately believes in the Vulcan way, even if his half human heritage, means he sometimes abandons it, after all the Romulans have wasted centuries on wars with each and other races, while the Vulcans and Humans built the Federation together.

Prime universe Spock not only abandoned logic in 2009 but also common bloody sense when he thought he could save the Romulan homeworld from the sun exploding by turning it into a black hole instead. Even if his plan was successful all that it’d mean is instead of being incinerated instantly Romulus would be frozen to death slowly enough to notice but too quickly to save all but a fraction of its life. I've always disagreed that his actions with the Gallileo Seven were "illogical." Space is massive, and even the Enterprise had no real idea where to aim their sensors at to even begin looking, so it was quite possible just waiting would have resulted in a long wait until death from undiscovery even if it streched out their fuel supply more. Lighting the fuel, however, increased their visibility and thus chances of quicker discovery at the cost of expending their fuel at once. Both waiting and lighting up their remaining fuel had rational pros vs possible risks.

Ugh. I really enjoyed the role reversal between Spock and Kirk in the first Kelvin Film, but that's because Dimensional Divergence was kinda the first film's whole schtick. It works because it fits the theme. Into Darkness just felt like being repeatedly hit over the head with the same bag of tricks. Just for the hell of it. 😅 But if we're allowing alternate realities for examples of Spock abandoning logic, then I can't believe we didn't talk about "Mirror, Mirror". His whole species has abandoned logic, allying themselves with a hyper xenophobic Terran Empire that will, by way of it's very nature, undoubtedly betray and eradicate them as soon as it's convenient. Not very logical at all. Logic would dictate, that the tenants of Vulcan peace and freedom would make them stand as conscientious objectors, not collaborators. 🤷‍♂️🖖

To be completely fair...Vulcans in the show have actually never once employed genuine logic. So, really Spock could never have "abandoned" it in the first place.

You know there comes a time now and then where you just have to say, "F@ck it". Even for Vulcans like Spock.

If Star Trek were distributed by another studio, would Spock's love for Uhura been "Waskedly" or "Goofily"?

@@loulfw2513 In the video, Spock's love for Shura is "Paramount". "Waskedly" (as in Rabbit) is Warner Bros and Goofy is a Disney thing.

Quinto Spock was by far the most unlogical for the most part.
@keirfarnum6811

But that was true to the character. Vulcans practice logic because they’re inherently extremely emotional and use logic to temper that emotion. Plus he was half human living among humans; so it stands to reason he would develop more emotional traits. I liked Quinto’s rendition of Spock.

Classic Spock also never once indicated he had ever had an adopted sister let alone a human one. Like ever. Even when it would have been something essential to bring up in his discussions/arguments with McCoy

Ah, Ellie, I loves ya, but if I may...Uhura doesn't console "her captain", Vger isn't a he (or a she), and Spock isn't led to a "planet" that sprays him...also, maybe there's another list...a part 2? ...there's Zarabeth, and while one might argue that he was effected by being 5000 yrs in the past, I would counter with that's no different than Layla and the spores...also, his decision to hijack the Enterprise to save Cpt. Pike...LL&P 🖖🏻👽
