There's actually a deleted scene that shows the Romulans were captured by the Klingons shortly after their ship was disabled by Kirk's father, which explains why they weren't around for 25 years. Admittedly, it would have been better had they shown the scene where they escaped, but it is somewhat explained in the movie.

First, deleted scenes don't count any more than supplemental comic because most of the audience will never see them. Second, it still makes no sense. Like I always mentioned about Guardians of the Galaxy: Who keeps the prisoners' vehicle at the prison? Also, 25 years and the Klingons didn't strip the thing down for the technology or at least use it themselves?

One thing to note about Bones's assignment to the enterprise: He had been assigned as a *senior* medical officer. The chief medical officer who had been assigned to the Enterprise had been killed during their first encounter with the Nerada. Acting Captain Spock promoted Bones to CMO directly afterwards.

Fun Note: Apparently Riker took the Kobiyashi Maru test and WON but only because he offered to use some kind of ritual where he would do battle with the captain of the enemy ships. He is beaten, BUT bought his crew enough time to escape and survive. Thus beating the test, WITHOUT cheating.

There's a simple explanation for Nero taking 25 years to do anything one that I'm surprised the movie didn't use. The Kelvin's suicide run took out his ships warp drive. So they literally couldn't go to Romulus or anywhere else within a reasonable time, and because their ship is centuries ahead of anything, not to mention they are mostly miners it takes them years to repair it. Perhaps even until the arrival of Spock's ship as it's the only one remotely compatible.
@carlrood4457
@carlrood4457 6 жыл бұрын
So how did they know when Spock would arrive when they clearly didn't when they arrived? I doubt a mining ship's computer would have access to the kind of data that could make whatever calculations would be required.

I love Star Trek '09, and it's my #1 favorite film to be released that year. I even have the movie poster hanging on my wall next to the Power Rangers '17 movie poster (Posters to movie reboots to TV shows hanging side-by-side, I know). I also love "Into Darkness" and "Beyond." BTW, not only have I read Countdown, I've also read Nero, the mid-quel comic that shows what he was doing in the 25 years awaiting Spock-Prime's arrival.
@0ButterBall
@0ButterBall 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not gonna lie, I probably have an unhealthy obsession with Star Trek '09. Mostly because of all the material I got from the movie's commentary, novelization, and an early script that taught me how much Abrams and his writing crew really knew about Star Trek. And just how much they didn't know or care about the series.

They wanted someone who could bring Star Trek to a casual audience.
@carlrood4457
@carlrood4457 6 жыл бұрын
That's the problem with how some people think. Just make a good movie within the confines of the series. Do you think casual viewers knew who Khan was in 1982. Heck, I as a Star Trek fan thought it was weird idea to bring in a one off villain who's actor was best known for car commercials and a fairly silly TV show. They made a good movie and people came. Marvel has been proving that for the last decade. At best, most people had a passing familiarity with Iron Man and Thor. No one knew of Guardians of the Galaxy or Black Panther outside comics fans. They just made good movies.
@pious83
@pious83 6 жыл бұрын
+Loy Turns Indeed. it's the same thought process they had with the Marvel movies. Although they have potentially ignored more of the source material than Abrams & Co did, there was far less dissent from the fanbase, as no one really cared about the Avengers prior to the early 2000's.
@carlrood4457
@carlrood4457 6 жыл бұрын
It's also a case of the sheer amount of source material written over more than half a century by numerous writers. The idea that there's really one consistent narrative is more about fandom blindness, than anything else. There's also a history of various adaptations that differ from the source material and some of those changes being folded back into the source material (e.g. the Pratt-ification of Starlord). Comic fans are used to movies/TV/cartoons being different and are more concerned with the general personality and spirit of the characters being similar, along with being entertained. For example, the comic Tony Stark was never as irresponsible as he was at the beginning of the first film, but Downey hit enough points to be accepted. Chris Evans has perfectly performed Cap as a commanding bad-ass who's also humble and a little corny (but not too much). If there's one real problem with the Kelvin Kirk (except in Beyond) is he seems more in line with the pop culture image of Kirk than how he was actually portrayed in the series. Kirk actually had a number of serious relationships in his past and most of those women still harbor great affection for him. It's just their mutual careers (Kirk's real loves have all been highly educated and career oriented) pulled them apart. Most of his in series "man whore" reputation came from times where he used his charm to extricate his crew and/or ship from danger. Likewise, his recklessness was actually something that came later in life. Two separate references to his academy days painted him as a studious stick in the mud. He was so by the book, he reported a friend's mistake which led to him being passed over for promotion.
@pious83

+Carl Rood True, Marvel Comics in recent years has made efforts to bastardise it's own work to accommodate the Movies, which is wrong and ridiculously short-sighted. Star Trek began around the same time as Marvel Comics 60's revival. The idea isn't to rigidly stick to a word for word rendition of the Source Material, but to acknowledge it exists. That you literally have decades of inspiration to draw from. Which they have willing chosen to ignore, in favour of a generic formula that only adheres to the narrative of the past 15+ years. Because _reasons_ The Star Trek movies understood how to mine their heritage, by plucking Khan from the obscurity of a standalone episode of TOS and creating one of their most successful films around him. Also not wise to generalise comic book fans. The long term fans have always been harder to cater to onscreen, than those that have only emerged since the MCU. A friend of mine has been an Iron Man fan since the 80's and hates how 90% of Stark's rogues gallery has been completely abandoned and his "generic anime" MCU suit. Lastly, original comic book Stark was a willingly immoral, alcoholic, weapons manufacturer. Who couldn't really have been anymore unlikable and self serving. This also didn't change for decades. The MCU interpretation is extremely modernised and tame in comparison.

I just started watching Star Trek: The Animated series on Netflix last night...and you know what I realized? Spock's childhood scenes from this movie were directly lifted from the second episode of that show, "Yesteryear", right down to the three bullies provoking him with insults about his mother and Sarak telling him he'll need to choose between a Vulcan or Human way of life. The "whore" line was just added for the movie, though.

For me the whole "the federation has no money " is one of my biggest grips in the whole franchise. We know they trade with other space powers outside of the federation and they trade with in their own borders. We now shops and business exist. Corporations exist and unions. And even if they replicate all their food and building stuff ( whice i dobt as we know mines exist) people still have to put that shit together. And we know colonys can and will fail and fall into chaos or be taken over by some alien force. The DMZ and the world Toser yar came form. ( forgive my poor spellings) and even in the classic series and TNG people like Harry mud, miners and some farmers that wesly befriended expected to be compersated for goods and services. For me it's seems impossible that over the 300 so worlds and the billions of people that make up the federation. That no one uses money. I personally believe that money of some kind dose exist but it no longer means what it does today or if it dose the same kind of sort sighted greed for the sake of greed mind set that we have today. Either doesn't exist or it only exists in small isolated pockets. Or as a person to person personal drive

Within the Federation, credits. For external trade, gold-pressed latinum. I think that while you're in Starfleet and on-board your ship or at a Starbase, you don't need money as everything's provided for you. And when Kirk and crew stole the Enterprise, they were in a hurry and didn't want to draw attention to themselves by withdrawing all their savings.

I remember hearing/reading an explanation a while ago, early 2000's for how Kirk solved/cheated the Kobayashi Maru. The night before his third attempt, he sneaked/snuck into the simulation and programmed in a win scenario, "That when he would broadcast that he was James T. Kirk to the to Klingon vessels, they would retreat." His reasoning when asked why he programmed it in that way was that he felt that in the future his name would be feared and respect by friend and enemy alike. Don't know where this story originated, but it sounds perfect for the guy who would eventually invent the corbomite maneuver.

Yes the novel was called "Kobyashi Maru". It's kind of an anthology with a framing device where Kirk, Scotty, Sulu, and Chekov are in a "no win scenario" but have time to relate their test stories. Scotty's is great because he knows enough about the simulator engineering to violate the laws of physics. He knew it wouldn't work in the real world. Chekov's is mainly about a different test he took after failing the Kobyashi Maru. Sulu's solution was probably the most politically sound.

12:47 Here’s my reasoning for why the bullies used the term “whore.” From what I can gather of Vulcan, I think it would be reasonable to assume that they would be aware of terms used by other societies, including the term “whore” and the implications attached to it, most likely to help better understand these societies. Mind you, they may not use the terms themselves because, as you said, the implications attached to them may not be shameful in their culture, but keep in mind that Spock is half human and more emotional. And when you’re a kid, emotions can sometimes get the better of you, even if you know they shouldn’t. As such, while the bullies may not see the term as an insult, and Spock himself should logically know the term shouldn’t get to him, they know the term is regularly used as an insult on Earth, as well as the implications attached, and these kids were trying to get an emotional reaction out of him. Ergo, they resorted to using a term they didn’t see as an insult, just because they hoped that Spock would. There, I’ve said my peace, feel free to disagree. Back to the review.

In a book titled, appropriately enough, 'Kobayashi Maru', Kirk, Chekov, Sulu, and Scotty each tell how they went through the no-win scenario. In Kirk's case, he did cheat, although instead of making the Klingon's shields go down, he instead had them recognize him as a famous Starfleet captain, and assist him in rescuing the crew of the titular ship. He apparently set a new record for length of time spent in the scenario... and if you count Shatner's later books as canon, he inspired future test-takers to cheat as well. And he even received a backhanded compliment from one of the officers of the time. If you're curious, Chekov's story really doesn't have much to do with the test itself, opening with him detonating his ship in the middle of the Klingon fleet. Sulu finds the only 'real' solution to the scenario, refusing to violate the Neutral Zone, even though it dooms the Kobayashi Maru. Scotty ends up using a field theory he himself disproved years ago to destroy one pack of Klingons, proving that he's better suited to Engineering than Command.

Funny enough for Star Trek 2009? When it came around this was the only time when I was able to see it in the theater as an adult (rather than being shackled to the rules and restrictions set on me by my family). I was excited for it. I did my very best to try to isolate myself from it. I wasn't looking up spoilers or leaks or early reviews, etc. However, ads still reached me. And all those ads (at least in the region I lived at the time, Central Washington) were saying about how this was a straight up prequel to the original series. Which... I was kinda into. Original series as a setting had a lot going for it compared to later points. Space still more of a frontier than a well known and civilized place as you seen in Next Generation. Captain Pike seemed like it could be an interesting lead. But you know, they advertised it to me as a straight up prequel. So within minutes I was going "The hell? Kirk's father isn't dead...". At first I chalked it up to just being some small nerdy detail that they probably missed. But of course it was soon confirmed it was a clean slate alternate timeline. And by then I was quite soured on the bait and switch I went through there.

Star Trek 2009 was my introduction to the series. And even then, despite liking it, I thought it borrowed to many elements from Star Wars, and the villain was to dumb for my taste. Luckily, I got more invested in the other series when I grow older, since I think a lot of Star Trek’s themes & characters are even more relevant now then back then.

I actually fell in love with Star Trek thanks to this move. Sure i had seen reruns of TNG on tv here and there and my Uncle is a hardcore trekkie. But i grew up with Star Wars. And as you said this is a Star Wars movie with Kirk and Spock so i watched it. I loved it and told my uncle. He then gave me TOS. I have always loved older movies so to watch a series from 1967 was not something super weird for me so i gave TOS a fair chance and i loved it. I binged it and then i went to TNG and i loved it also. Q is a clear favorite. By the time Into Darkness came up i had cathed up with all of Star Trek and the original movies. So i was not as fond of Into Darkness. It just felt like an attempt to be a remake of a masterpiece. Beyond i really liked.

so, about the money thing, in the original series, money DOES seem to be a thing still, its not until next gen that they talk about not having currency. there are several times where kirk "docks pay" or they talk about "buying something at the spacestation", and i think Scotty mentions getting a raise in one episode.

Star Trek 2009 is a movie that has a special place in my heart because it's the movie that introduced me to Star Trek as a kid. While I acknowledge the criticisms lobbied against it, (Especially after seeing all the classic series and some of the more recent shows) it did make me want to learn more about the original series that it was based on, which in turned made me want to learn more about what came after. With that said, I DO agree that it IS a flawed film, especially upon rewatch.

I actually really liked Enterprise and it was the first Star Trek series that I watched on a weekly basis while being aware and a fan of the little episodes of TOS that I've seen. I also tried some episodes of TNG before Enterprise and got bounced away from them aside from the concept of Borgs which I loved. All in All, I think that Enterprise wasn't so bad.

My problem with the Vulcan bullies is how they tease him. Their teasing is an effort to get an emotional response. And sure, Spock is half human and they think he can be prodded, but it just seems out of character. Everyone else they torment would not be given to emotional responses, so would their go-to attack be emotionally loaded insults that normally wouldn't get a rise from unemotional Vulcans? Or would they have some specifically Vulcan means of provoking someone? It seems their taunts would not be so emotionally loaded and instead... I don't know, attack one's value or accomplishments, one of those things that seems to really get under Vulcans' skins.

I agree with you. DS9 is superior because of its consistent storyline and the ramifications that individual episodes had on the overarching plot and universe as a whole. And the ever evolving sometimes-foe/sometimes-ally Dukat added an element that no other Trek series had. All the other Trek shows had characters exploring the universe. DS9 had the universe affected by the characters.

My main problem with the "Kelvin Timeline" is that nearly every other time travel incident in Star Trek made it clear you were changing your own timeline. There were alternate universes, but they were not due to time travel. The best explanation is that Spock and Nero didn't just travel in time, they also traveled to an alternate universe.

No. Their own history was changed and they had to change it back, or at least lose to it. That's how Star Trek has always done it. We're being told the original timeline still exists with the Kelvin Timeline being an alternate one alongside it.

One of my big problems with the bullies is a particular lapse in logic with their own race, which is wasn’t it established that Vulcans actually feel more intensely than humans but after it nearly drove them to extinction they decided as a race to repress it as much as possible by being focused on how does this fit logically?

That "wait a while and do another time jump" thing is exactly what I think they should've done with Discovery. It boggles the mind how little of the show they would've needed to change to make that work. From what I've heard about DS9, the Klingons were on the brink of war, so minimal story changes needed. Would've explained the uniforms, the differences in technology, and they wouldn't have had to shoot themselves in the foot by forcing themselves to be limited to the chronology of TOS in terms of certain plot developments. Not to mention they could've expanded on things like the destruction of Romulus or what happened to the original Next Gen crew after Nemesis. And as for the main character's being related to Spock, I personally thought it was asinine. Not going to insult anyone who disagrees, but you have to admit that her backstory is VERY similar to Worf's.

Back in High School, I use to read all of the Kelvin Timeline comic books (I stopped somewhere in the # 50's, a while before Beyond was released). The first few issues told the TOS storylines within the context of the new timeline and weren't that bad..., but, later, I began to notice something that never really improved: The artwork. Was it bad? No. Where all the facial expressions/ body poses taken from ST [2009]? Yes. Oh dear God, yes. Over the issues I began to pray for original characters to be introduced so I could look at panels where the crew's expressions weren't copied stills from that movie.

1) They left out the plot with the Romulan Crew escaping the Klingons because some at a screening asked (like I asked and was told that was cut) what they were doing for 25 years: So the Klingons had that ship for 20ish years and they were still torturing the crew on how to use it? It was still in one piece? They aren't even using it to mine? Just leaving it above a prison, okay. Seriously?!" 2) Unfortunate for this Star Trek revival, JJ Abrams is the master of "2-Dimensional Thinking",. Star Trek was 2 hour commercial with a big budget trying to sell you on idea that this is "Star Trek" then tell a story. I trained myself not to get to invested in his work and enjoy the ride but its hard with a franchise that was so strong during my life. Alex Kurtzman being in charge of all the new TV shows (and having worked a lot with JJ, co-writing this movie) doesn't help. Every time I worry about what the new "Picard" show will be I picture is a Matlock like show where he goes around as a retired officer working/solving federation crimes (all the while covertly investigating the s1 "Conspiracy" aliens' return)

Star Trek 09 WAS my introduction to the series. (: I decided that I wanted to write fan fic, so I went off and got TOS on DVD...and it turned out I liked that EVEN BETTER. Now I've watched every single episode of every single series (sans Discovery season 2) and seen all the movies and I even own several shelves' worth of Star Trek novels. In retrospect, I'm not crazy about the Kelvin universe (outside of Beyond, and Discovery season 1 IS my favorite of all the series), but I'm still glad it was made, because otherwise I never would have become the Trekkie I am today! It makes me a little sad when people bash it as hard as some people do as a result...but that does seem to be something of a hallmark of this fandom.

according to a blu ray special feature this enterprise is 725 meters long, although accounts vary. The TOS Enterprise was 288 meters. The Enterprise D was 642 meters and had a compliment of 1012 people. So comparing Reboot enterprise to original it stands to reason that every ship is bigger in the reboot and thus has more people on it. Its a dumb thing to change but there it is.

greatsayain maybe Star Fleet made the ships bigger in this timeline as a response to the Narada so easily over powering and destroying the USS Kelvin, they don’t know it’s a mining vessel they just know one of their fleet got taken out fairly easily by a massive Romulan space craft

@@josmonlee13 that's a possibility. It doesn't explain why the Kelvin itself has so many people on it if the policy of larger ships came into effect after the Kelvin was destroyed. The Kelvin had to have been big in comparison to original timeline enterprise.
