Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at the first issue of an adaptation of a great film!
atopthefourthwall.com
Originally uploaded December 5th, 2011.
ORIGINAL INFO: Beyond the darkness, beyond the human evolution… is Khan. And a pointless adaptation of a great movie.
RUMINATIONS: And so we get to the first proper story stuff post-Entity arc. The thing I realized at the end of that arc was that, simply put, there was no way to escalate the threat. Once you get to “hero defeats Lovecraftian God,” there really is no way to make the next thing scarier. While I understand the position, I’ve always been disappointed by the attitude of many writers in TV or the like who have said, “we decided to end it here because there was no way to top ourselves.” To me, it shouldn’t be about trying to top yourself, just trying to continue to produce good material and people will flock to the quality. Thus if I can’t escalate the SCALE of the threat, the next goal should be to turn things inwards - develop the characters, create real conflict and tragedy and heartache - thus this three-parter.
I like the idea that Linkara is AWARE that he’s part of a storyline, but that even he is restricted by the rules of the setting to where he wants to keep the storyline stuff limited to after the review whenever possible.

Nitpick on the nitpick: Those weren't D7s in the Kobayashi Maru simulation. Those were K't'inga-class starships, a similarly designed replacement class seen in TMP onwards. Also, thank you for mentioning Mackenzie Calhoun. He's my favorite Star Trek captain. And that's a particularly good book and I love his solution to the no win scenario.

Vader the White Mackenzie's approach was extra awesome especially when you consider the novel Star Trek Enterprise: Kobayashi Maru has the scenario as the catalyst to the Earth/Romulan War where the Maru WAS a part of a Romulan trap to capture Enterprise. Captain Mackenzie had been right in that regard of it being a shady trick

What's really sad about this adaptation was that its writer, Andy Schmidt, was the head of IDW at the time. He took on this assignment himself because he felt it was too plum a gig to give to anyone else. This was purely a vanity gig for him...and he wasted no time proving he was the wrong man to adapt this to comic book form. Setting that aside, the art in this adaptation is just wretched. Aside from the absolutely terrible anatomy and bad likenesses, the Enterprise is really off-model a lot of the time and there's a ton of really stupid changes made (why is there a guy with runway wands in spacedock?). It's almost like the artist didn't even bother paying attention to the movie...which is counterproductive when adapting said movie.

I may be a huge fan of Star Wars, and the film saga is my favorite film series of all time, but I have a soft spot fro Star TREK as well. I own all 13 Star Trek films in my movie collection, including the Director's Edition of Star Trek 1 and 2. I agree with Linkara that The Wrath of Khan is one of the most classic of Star Trek stories. This comic, however, was missing the point.

One of the strengths of this movie is likely the minimalism. This movie takes place in all of seven locations (not counting entire star systems since that's pretty much window-dressing). The holodeck, Kirk's quarters, some random corridors and a lift, the Enterprise, the Reliant, underground on Ceti Alpha, Ceti Alpha 1 but it still manages to be marvellous.

Headcanon for Saavik’s rank: She IS a full Lieutenant, returned to Starfleet Academy for command training (this is after all before they had holodecks after all) and as such the crew for her to command as part of her training is cadets undergoing their own training
@TK199999

The reason for Saavik being a cadet and lieutenant, is that she at the end of graduation and performed so well at the academy in the command track, that they are making her a '3rd' lieutenant, which some navies and armies still used today.

One of the things that bug me about Wrath of Khan (the movie and, by extension, the comic) is that Chekov knows that they need to get away from Botany Bay because of Khan... despite the fact that the TOS episode "Space Seed" does not feature Chekov because he hadn't been introduced to Star Trek by that point. Sure, you could make the argument that Chekov probably read up on the Enterprise's previous adventures, but that's stretching it. If that were the case, the events in "Space Seed" are just one of many close-calls the Enterprise deals with in TOS, and "Botany Bay" is somewhat of a small detail especially considering he remembers the name of that ship but didn't recognize until that point that Khan was on the same planet. However, that does NOT excuse Khan somehow remembering who the hell Chekov is. Eh, whatever. You have to work with what you have. If I can let some plot inconsistencies slide between the Fast and the Furious movies then I can certainly live with them in Star Trek. Besides, it's not as jarring as the plot-hole in BTTF Part 2 where 2015 Biff Tannen shouldn't have arrived back to the same version of 2015 as before after giving 1955 Biff the almanac (still, I'm a big BTTF fan though.) Also, in "Space Seed," Kirk actually makes Khan a fair deal, and the episode ends with them both in agreement. Also, Khan was made aware that Ceti Alpha Five was a brutal planet before being sent there. It was never once stated as being "teaming with life." On the other hand, "Checking up on Khan" was never part of the deal, but Khan was left there for years to his thoughts with his love interest having died upon landing so I suppose it's not at all surprising or unrealistic that Khan would be festering hate for Kirk.
@cheezemonkeyeater
@cheezemonkeyeater 2 жыл бұрын
Okay, a bit of nuance you missed. King Lear isn't about betrayal. It's about perceiving betrayal where none exists and destroying your life because of it. Khan identifies with fictional characters whose obsessions lead to their own destruction, but he completely misses the point about it destroying them, even when missing that point is itself the entire point of story. Khan's desire for revenge transcends mere obsession and becomes blinding madness.

I watched with my mother, who watched the original tv series when she was younger & man, it was a epic & amazing as you said, Linkara. Congratulations, I officially became a big fan of the series.

It strikes me as odd that the Kobayashi-Maru scenario is famous for what it is. Isn't it more effective as a gauge of behaviour if the people taking the test DON'T KNOW that it's unwinnable? Basically all you have to do to pass it is do your best and keep your cool when you know that it's not something you need to beat. The stories always have people like Kirk conspiring to try and beat it but given the kinds of things they make in real life like scripts to recite in job interviews I find it way more likely that with its purpose being well-known it would just inspire a script to deliver and certain emotional notes to fake hitting to give off the appearance of the appropriate attitude.

Actually, fans wanted one for decades. The reason it didn't happen at the time was the license was in limbo. DC wanted to do it when they got the license. We got a few pages of their adaptation in their Star Trek (vol one) #1. But Paramount thought too much time had passed. IDW got to do it because Paramount want to be able to do a trade of ALL the movies and remembered they never did Star Trek II.

A deep confession: When this movie vame out, my country was still deep in the soviet era. It was hard being a trekkie back then. And later, when western entertainment finaly started to come through, it was too late for the original series. We just barely hopped on the New Generation train. So these older movies were a bit of a myth. I did my best back then and managed to get the Wrath of Khan in book form, translated of course. It scared the living hell out of me! My imagination filled in for the special effects with my own, perfectly convincing imagery and I was terrified! Now I can't even watch the movie. a) because it will never look as awesome as I made it back then and b) because it still scares me. I wish I could have had a book with pretty pictures.

That line from Kirk about the Enterprise being "the only ship in the quadrant" is a thousand times more nonsensical than the usual cliche of "only ship in range," or, "the only ship in the sector." I guess nobody reminded the writer for this comic that the entire Milky Way galaxy only has FOUR QUADRANTS, and at this point in Trek history, the Alpha Quadrant is pretty much the only decently explored one of the four by humans. So what Kirk is saying with that line is that every single other space fairing vessel from every known species is...what? Grounded? Under repairs? Destroyed? That line is terrible!!

On the Saavik rank thing, in, for example, ROTC, everyone does have a rank, but they're "cadet ranks". You could be, say, a Second Lieutenant, but you're still a Cadet Second Lieutenant. They show hierarchy within the cadet corps, serving as training for how the ranking system works. However, even the highest cadet rank is below the lowest enlisted rank.

6:01 I have to say that this is actually very realistic. If you look at real world news, you will see news reports about the US doing naval exercises off of the coast of Korea, China doing naval exercises near contested islands, etc. The point is not just for it to be a military exercise, but to also be an excuse to have an additional military presence in an area where you are concerned an enemy might try to pull a surprise attack or engage in clandestine activities.

IDW was doing adaptations of the movies for all its licensed brands at the time. They also adapted The Transformers: The Movie, for instance. A tiny bit more competently than this since they actually attempted to answer some questions people raised... but there's a reason its only a tiny bit: The answers cause further questions and it still has stupidly dropped scenes, and stupid dialogue changes. (Regarding one of those faulty answers, having the other Decepticon combiners be absent because they were battling Omega Supreme and the Autobot combiners at the Mt. St. Hillary Autobot base to a stalemate is not exactly a smooth solution, since Megatron's goal was to crush Autobot City and deprive the Autobots of their only current tactically significant power plant (and if they were on-planet he could have called them and had them break off from that fight to finish the destruction of Autobot City and thwart Prime's turning the tide). A better answer would have been that Omega Supreme and the combiners were off scouring space for more fuel or something and were out of contact, while the other Decepticon combiners remained on Cybertron to guard it against any attempt to capitalize on Megatron's absence...) And they also botched it by not adapting the sequences that were storyboarded for the battle and its buildup but not animated or that appeared in trailers but not the film, which themselves actually do explain a lot: The Autobot shuttle sent to Earth ran into a meteor shower, which slowed it down enough to be overtaken (I'm presuming that the Decepticons used Astrotrain for the trip /to/ earth as well as their departure) The initial aerial strafing runs are what did Wheeljack (originally going to be Smokescreen but Wheeljack's planned subplot was dropped, possibly for reasons of budget and reasons of the creators getting pissed at Chris Latta) and Windcharger in Skywarp and Thundercracker are injured because they got blasted by some of the zillion defense guns. Bombshell is injured because Mirage nailed him with a missile (incidentally paying Bombshell back for brainjacking him with a cerebro-shell in the episode "Traitor") Mirage is absent from Season 3 because Megatron blew him away right after that, killing him. After being fought to a standstill by the Dinobots, Devastator is forcibly separated by a missile barrage from Ultra Magnus, Sideswipe, Red Alert, and Tracks, explaining why he's not seen separating as the Decepticons flee and why Frenzy and Rumble are able to easily shake him apart aboard Astrotrain later: His combination joints are already damaged. The now-pissed Constructicons naturally return fire, with Long Haul killing Red Alert (explaining why /he/ never shows up again in the series) Optimus Prime's shooting spree is interrupted by Blitzwing shooting his rifle out of his hands, followed by the Decepticons dogpiling him. This is why he's shown standing back up when he reaches Megatron, as well as why he's unarmed at first in their battle and has to pick the rifle up later. Yeah, IDW is full of stupid people.

Yeah, but he's a *genetically superior being,* so he probably has improved eyes, but that may not even be necessary, because clearly, the planet was close enough to affect the orbit of the planet, so it would have been much closer, and so more easily identified in the sky of the planet.

Love the part at 15:15 where he says what the dialogue should sound like with the mask still on. Now I just picture Khan wearing the mask throughout the whole movie, mumbling all his dialogue with no one being able to understand what he's saying. Khan: [inaudible mumbles] Joachim: Uh sir, please take your mask off, it's hard to follow your orders when we can't understand what you're saying. Also just for fun, watch the above mentioned scene with the closed captioning/subtitles on. Having KZbin's algorithm try to decipher the dialogue, only to end up with random nonsense just makes the scene even funnier.

Well, he *was* just on the bridge that underwent a simulated destruction at the hands of the Klingons in -- or so I hear -- a fake-out opening specifically designed to counter details having leaked on how the movie ended. ...but, yeah, I never made that connection -- Khan's worldview is informed by the fact that he was stuck in a box with those specific books to read, over and over again. Re: First-act cliffhanger: Honestly, out of context, telling the crew that there's a good chance what they're about to do is *way* more dangerous than what they signed up for and they're going to have to grow up faster than expected... so he's sorry to put this on them; there's a lightning storm in space coming... yeah. Speaking of Saavlik, I believe she was played by Kirstie Allie, who would later have starring roles in Cheers and Overweight(?) Actress.

While the comic is far inferior to the film I do prefer the khan reveal in the comic of khan as he’s removing his helmet. Feels a bit more dramatic and I think it perfectly fits his character.

The 23rd century thing in the movie bugged me for one reason. 23rd Century would be the 2200s right? Then why do Kirk and McCoy act like an ale from 2280 is really old? It can’t be older then 20 years of the movie is set in the 23rd century! It bugs the Hell out of me!

Ale apparently has a pretty limited shelf life. Five years would be pretty old. Also probably wouldn't be that good.

How bloody old is this crew anyway? Going by normal time, it's two hundred years between Space Seed and Wrath of Khan. Do the crew have longevity or something?
@AT4W
@AT4W 3 жыл бұрын
Erm, no, it was fifteen years between Space Seed and Wrath of Khan. If you mean Khan's crew from when they were in 1996, that's because they were in suspended animation on the Botany Bay and were then located by the Enterprise crew in Space Seed and awoken.

@@AT4W I get it. It's a bit of me misunderstanding the movie (came right off watching the movie for the first time when I wrote this. For some reason, I assumed it was 200 years SINCE Space Seed when it was 200 years before Space Seed. Also, only realised this now but Khan has super strength. Picked Checkov right off his feet and lugged around a giant piece of concrete like debris in the final battle with minimal exertion.

Well, one could decide to stick to the rules and not even fly into the neutral zone and leave the whole aftermath to the diplomats. Considering that you would only loose one ship instead of two and maybe even get the hostages(shooting down an already disabled freighter with civilians seems to be quite dishonorable and probably unnecessary) back after some political hick-hack, this would be at least not be a total loss.
