Qui-gon was the only one who could have saved Anakin.
@SirRebrl5 жыл бұрын
@Lucas Marçola Obi Wan was scarcely ready to have a padawan at all, much less one as challenging as Anakin. Qui-Gon, on the other hand, had an impressive flexibility and a deep appreciation for nuance. Obi Wan questioned Qui-Gon's approach to things, so of course he couldn't teach from it. He wasn't as orthodox as some others, but still more rigid than Qui-Gon and I think a lot of his flexibility that we saw likely came first from Qui-Gon then from training Anakin. Qui-Gon could have responded adaptively to Anakin's struggles. He would have listened, given him room as needed, and encouraged him to find his own path to living (mostly) within the Jedi code. He wouldn't have made Anakin feel like he had to hide things.
@kylegarrett24295 жыл бұрын
@@SirRebrl I agree with you, because the only thing that seems to be able to shake Anakin to his core is family. Qui Gon was mature enough to recognize this hidden empathy and teach Anni to cultivate it beyond just family. Qui Gon expressed his feelings, Obi repressed them.
@maxbaugh93724 жыл бұрын
Anakin desperately needed a proper father figure and Qui-Gon would've filled that role perfectly. Obi-wan was too young and inexperienced, he was more like a much older brother, so the one who acted most like a father to him ended up being Palpatine. In the dinner scene in TPM, Anakin talks about having had dreams of becoming a Jedi and returning to free all the slaves, becoming a great liberator and hero to the galaxy. What if those were prophetic dreams, what was *supposed to* happen?

Yes!! Star Wars is meant to be enjoyed! I'm so tired of people trying to ruin it for everyone else because they didn't like something! I love the franchise as a whole (including the prequels and The Last Jedi), and I loved Rise of Skywalker. But I said that at work yesterday and was told that I was wrong, that the sequel trilogy isn't to be celebrated because it's not "real" Star Wars. I would hate to be so angry and bitter that I wouldn't let people enjoy something that they love. You perfectly summed up how I feel about the series. While Phantom Menace wasn't the first Star Wars film I had seen, it was my first in theatres, and now I have seen all of them since (except Revenge of the Sith) on the big screen and plan to for as long as they keep releasing new ones.

Way to go Amanda. I saw the original Star Wars in the theater in 77 when I was 10, so I was a bit older than you when I first saw a Star Wars Movie. I love "The Phantom Menace". It did not feel derivative. Attack of the Clones lifted to many scenes from RoboCop, Gladiator, and Chicken Run for my liking. By the time we get to Revenge of the Sith, the prequels had deviated to far from "A New Hope" for the two stories to mate up correctly. The Phantom Menace was able to do whatever it wanted to do, and it was glorious. I have to agree with Mr. Plinket on many of the shortcomings. With that said it is still a guilty pleasure. I watch it at least once a year, I have not seen "Attack of the Clones" or "Revenge of the Sith" in at least a decade. The Phantom Menace special effects often felt like they did what they did just because they could. Every shot was a special effects shot. The Matrix rightly deserved it's Oscar win for best special effects that year . All the effects were done in service of the story.

No joke, as a kid I was obsessed with the podrace. I thought it was so cool that I had to learn the names of all 18 participants in the race. I played Episode I: Racer for hours, I played the sequel Racer Revenge even longer. I still for the life of me cannot fathom why anyone would dislike it. It's chariot races but the horses are replaced with jet engines! How is that not awesome? It's that kind of wild, boundless, insane imagination that makes the Star Wars universe feel different from other sci-fi franchises. Also, as someone whose introduction to Star Wars began with The Phantom Menace, I'm glad I'm not the only one who adores this movie. This video is extremely valid. I'm a lot like you: The Phantom Menace was not only my first Star Wars movie, but the first Star Wars movie I saw in theaters. I was born in 97 so I was only about 2 seeing it and don't really remember, but my mom tells me I was fascinated by the underwater scene, lol. My actual earliest memory of Star Wars is being captivated by the wedding scene in Attack of the Clones (and my gay baby heart seized by Natalie Portman). I've rewatched the first six movies many times over my childhood and into adulthood, and I absolutely still love The Phantom Menace. Honestly, a lot of the silliness and even the dryness of some of the plots is part of what I love about it. It has this way of being serious and grim and setting up the darker plots of the prequels while also being fun and engaging, which is especially important for kids. You feel for Anakin, a young boy who has to leave his mother in order to have a better future, not realizing he's still signing up for a lot of obligation and heartache, and you have Padme, a frighteningly young queen who's desperate to protect her people from an unexpected and tragic situation. Add in Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan with their ongoing storylines and you have a movie with lots of emotional stakes that I, both as a kid and an adult, have been easily invested in. And the visuals! Seeing the Jedi Temple in its glory days? The Naboo Palace? And yes, the underwater scenes are still fun. I adore this movie, even with it's problems (problems the other movies also have!) It's very nice to see other people appreciating it as well.

I loved this. People that are not toxic fanboys need to take into account that for many people of our generation, THIS was our intro to Star Wars, and it couldn't be that much of a shitshow if it lead to us following the prequels and then watching the original trilogy that most of us where too young to have seen or cared for until that (because let's face it, when your dad tries to make you watch ''Star Wars'' when it's playing on TV on a Sathurday night, going like ''this was the best sci fi when I was your age!'', most kids our age would prolly just roll their eyes)

I love Phantom Menace as well and you summed it up why. Though my introduction to SW was 4,5 and 6 for me those movies already felt they were "old" which they were, born in 1990 a movie made in 1977 isn't exactly "thrilling to watch". They have their own spark of course and they have aged quite decently through-out the years, but Phantom Menace was a movie made for a young one like me. Also what made episodes 1-3 special for me was Anakin. I always loved how he was portrayed as a child and as a young adult. I even loved the "Yippee!" because it was so very like him. When he grew up he did have some soapy scenes, but I loved how emotional he got over the smallest things. I have not watched Clone Wars to the extent that I would know how anakin's character is fixed in those, but I kinda want to keep the image of how I see Anakin as how he was in episodes 1-3. Weirdly enough I also liked the political scenes, but that's most likely because to this day I understand very little about the deep end of politics XD

Erik I loved Anakin and he turned into a temper tantrum man baby. I’d say Rey is a better role model than that, and Kylo starts as a bitch but I like his personal character arc. Kids just love characters they think or cool or identify with in some way. No one would argue that Vader is a good role model and kids dressed up as him before he had any semblance of a redemption arc because he was cool. Same thing with Maul Again, I have problems with the sequels. There’s a lot that could and should have been better. But I just can’t stay too upset when I see kids super excited about their costumes and getting to the movies and running around a theme park finding their favourite characters.

Personally, as somebody who grew up with the original trilogy... Rise of Skywalker makes The Phantom Menace look like an absolute work of art. The Phantom Menace was a movie that tried to be too many things to too many people. It was supposed to be a serious drama for adult fans, it was supposed to be a funny movie for kids, it was supposed to have action, and of course, to tie in with the original movies. Oh, and a cash cow of course. And that was ultimately the problem with it. It tried too much. If George Lucas hadn't been so intimidating for a lot of the people working with him, and more open to input from others, The Phantom Menace could have been absolutely brilliant. As it was, it ended up being very flawed, but still having many great elements. And yes, the pod racing is fun. Put on the pod racing scene on a big television with surround sound, and you'll understand why ILM and Skywalker Sound are the very top companies in their respective fields.

While we may try and convince ourselves otherwise, many, many people loved this movie when it came out until the burgeoning internet told them to hate it. One of the few times I have ever heard an audience spontaneously erupt into applause was the Obi-Wan/Darth Maul fight on opening night, not to mention the applause that came at the end every time I saw it in the theater its first run. Yep, it has all those flaws you mentioned (many of which can be aimed at the original trilogy, as in less than competent actors, too much reliance on effects, bad dialogue, etc.) but I still love watching it and sharing it with my young son who spent Christmas morning running through the house with his new Anakin's pod racer Lego we built that morning. It does bear mentioning that there was a whole lot more practical effects than folks think in it. In fact I believe more than in any individual OT flick. It was just that the digital effects got all the press because that was the exciting, new technology so it got the focus. Oh, and I'm one of those weirdos who actually really likes all the politics. I love watching how Palpatine manipulates everything from behind the scenes to get exactly the result he wants, not to mention the dude's patience!

Thank you for this video. And thank you for showing that someone's opinion doesn't negate yours and vice versa. So... May the force be with you. Always

Attack of the Clones is the only bad star wars prequel movie. Phantom Menace and Revenge of The Sith are great.

Thank you! I have always liked Phantom Menace best out of the prequels! I saw A New Hope in a drive in with my family. It was one of the early re releases around 79. We had Star Wars toys before we ever even saw Star Wars. My brothers favorite was Greedo. He was heart broken when Han Solo killed him. Lol. I just remember it as the first bonding experience I had with my Dad. So when The Phantom Menace came out I made sure to take my little sister who was the same age as I was when A New Hope came out. She loved it! That’s why I think people are missing out on not going to the movies. It was all part of the experience you could share with someone. I also hate James Camerons Avatar! I am slightly older than you, I first saw the Original Trilogy when it was re-released in 1997, and how you felt about The Phantom Menace is how I felt about Return of the Jedi. I know it's not the greatest from a film-snob perspective, but I don't care, it's awesome!

Jar Jar was necessary. The role of the Gungans was similar to the Ewoks: the hero is kind to someone who seems to be useless because the hero is good. Later the useless turns out to be very useful and helped surprise the enemy.

I grew up with Star Wars prequels and loved its world or universe. That got my childhood mind going and it’s still one of the reasons I live Star Wars to this day. Everything just feels like I could actually go there and it’d be great. But that’s my thoughts on this.

I know NOTHING about star wars but after listening to your wisdom in the "Cats" review I thought I would watch some more of your reviews. I like to listen to you and you just got my Sub.
