In the early to mid 90's his baseball cards were treated as almost common which I always found strange from a record breaker who had won two World Series rings with two teams. Maybe because it was Oakland and Toronto, and of course home runs being so important *yawn* even Brady fn Anderson was popping 50+ into the seats

I played baseball for Little League and High School from 86-94 and stealing bases was my exciting thing about baseball to me. Rickey Henderson and Vince Coleman were the 2 funnest players to watch IMO. I could hit for contact and was fast but I was 6ft tall and 145lbs I wasn't hitting any homeruns. Great story about Mac Suzuki, he was expelled from high school in Japan so his parents set him off to the US to get a job without knowing english at the age of 16, somehow he found his way into working as a laundry boy for a non-affiliated Class-A minor league team the Salinas Spurs and they say what the heck and let him pitch for 1 inning in the final game of the 1992 season. Off of that he was able to gain a full season contract for 1993 with another non-affiliated Class-A minor league team in the San Bernardino Spirit at the age of just 18, where he stood out as a closer. Off that season he was able to catch the attention of MLB scout and he signed with the Mariners and worked his way up the system by 1996 to become the third Japanese born player ever to make it to the MLB and the very first to ever play in the American League. He is one of the rare Japanese born players who played in the MLB before ever touching NPB. Additional story, I now own the exact glove he is wearing in the headshot photo they use on Baseball-Reference from his time with the Royals.

Very good video; well done. I first saw Rickey in 1980 at Oakland. He was in left and literally about maybe 20 to 30 from the infield. I told my friend he was playing way too shallow. He said, "You think so?" I'm like he's practically at shortstop! They were playing the Yankees and the hitter smashed a line drive and I'm like yup that's over his head, he's way too shallow. Then Rickey turns on a dime; runs blazingly fast towards the fence and leaps up and grabs the ball like a wide receiver but it was a frozen rope line drive and tumbles about 10 feet and has the ball. I grew up watching Willie Mays play and I knew right then that this is a special player.

Great video. I grew up in the Bay Area and was a 6 year old boy watching Rickey come up. Our family had season tix and I was fortunate to get to throw out the first pitch in 1990 for my Bday, against the Yankees in front of a sold out crowd. Anyway, getting back to this video which I had to stop because I wanted to save it and make my daughter watch it with me. She came home the other day and asked why I was crying, she has only seen that maybe twice in her life, through all the death in our family, which we have had a lot the last few years, seeing my A’s leave, and the memories that I shared with my older brother who is no longer with us, my pops who died the same month as he did, our mom who passed shortly after, and my little sister who passed this year, I believe that I held a lot of that in and on Thursday of this week 2024 it came flooding out. I’ll never forget where I was when I saw Rickey for the first time and I fell in love with this team and its cast of characters. Rickey being my favorite by far. Thank you for the video, I suppose even though I won’t have my A’s in Oakland, and be able to take my little girl to the games and tell her stories of her uncle and I taking Bart as teenagers and spending all day at that beautiful coliseum, I know some people hated it. RESPECT! 100%! He terrorized pitchers at the plate and on the bases! I made him as a player in Baseball Stars For NES. He's definitely a force with which to be reckoned... yeah it's a video game, but It's fun to think it's him tearing up the base paths with the greatest of ease!

The player most similar to Rickey Henderson with all of the Runs Scored, Stolen Bases, and On Base Percentage was Billy Hamilton from the late 1800s and early 1900s. He stole 100 bases in a season 4 times in his career, is #3 all time in stole bases, is #28 in runs scored (he only played 14 seasons), he walked 100+ times 5 times, and holds the MLB record for most runs scored in 1 season with 198! That's the closest comparison I can find to him as a player. Great video. Rickey is an absolute legend, and was a lot of fun to watch play. Keep up the good work on the videos!

I’d been saving this video in my back pocket for a boring day at work and today was that day. Loved every second of it. Thanks for helping me thru a long work day!

After his passing, the world just doesn't feel the same. Rickey was a true game changer. Rest in Peace, Mr. Stolen Base.

He died of a broken heart. Knowing his beloved A’s would no longer be playing in Oakland, he couldn’t handle it.

Those late 80s A's teams with Canseco,McGwire, Henderson,Henderson,Stewart,Eckersley etc were so fun to watch. Probably still my favorite team to watch ever even with the offensive explosion of the 90s and early 00s. With Ricky and the Bash Brothers coming up never wanted to miss a pitch. Canseco might be the most exciting strike out of all time. Even when he did if it wasn't looking the violence of the swing alone was still exciting he tried to absolutely kill the ball with every swing. The attitude of the team was great. Stewart with his low hat and intimidating stare. Ricky and his little ticks and mannerisms with the iconic neon green Mizuno batting gloves. Shame they only pulled 1 title out of 88 89 and 90 seasons. Even then the year they won it I remember watching Canseco cross home plate then the screen started shaking and went black. Giant earthquake while playing the Giants in the Series. Year prior up in the bottom of the 9th an injured Kirk Gibson hobbles up and hits a walk off home run setting the tone for the entire series. If he doesn't hit that there's a good chance the series goes a different way. Anyway the point is even when they lost it there was still a crazy historic moment involved. Loved that team. Dave Parker, Walt Weiss, Carney Langford, Terry Steinbach, Mike Moore, Bob Welch on top of others I already mentioned.

You got a new fan today Mr. Rickey Henderson. I had heard you were good, but now I understand that you're the best. Utmost respect for your closing line Hall of Fame speech. The G.O.A.T. - no doubt.

As a Jays fan, we were super excited to have him and recognized the effect he had on opposition regardless of his poor play.
