The conjugate system was Originally designed for Olympic weight lifting and athletics . Westside just uses it for geared powerlifting. It can absolutely be a great way to train for general strength. Granted you choose the appropriate exercise selection. Andy baker (who helped write the grey book uses it .)

The only thing is, a ton of Westside's success has been with Olympic sports, team sports, martial arts etc. Obviously Louie was seeing things through the lens of equipped lifting, but he made strong arguments for these methods being ideal for many types and had philosophy on how to adjust methods goal to goal. Good lord, I know exactly what he's talking about regarding olympic weightlifters. I went to a crossfit gym that had an olympic weightlifting club for years. The coach was real nice, but the people in the club were some of the uppitiest I've ever met. Despite only focusing on the olympic lifts, they were routinely outlifted by the people who did the normal crossfit program. If you get outlifted by the average crossfiter, you have no business thinking you are better than anyone.

Speed is important. Many will find that they make better progress with submax training using weights that allow them to keep from grinding a bunch of reps. These will be the people who set huge PRs on the platform.

Raw vs geared lifting. Speed is critical in multi-ply because the faster you get the weight moving off the bottom, when you've got the full assistance of the shirt/suit/wraps, the easier it will be to lock it out, when you're actually lifting all the weight yourself. It's why they do so much dynamic work, training with an increasing resistance curve simulates the requirements of equipped lifting. In raw lifting the resistance is the same at all points.

I'm 58 years old and do RIPs blue book workouts. I bench 400lbs, pull 400 lbs, squat 400 lbs. I just do it to be healthy in my elder years. It feels good to squat off the pot as I can repeat that sub optimal exercise many times. I found the blue book after I blew out my shoulder benching 500 lbs. It took 2 years to get back to 400 lbs bench. Thanks RIP! OLD Dudes of the world rise up and take over.

I've known Rip 35 years. Been lifting for 40 plus . No one will ever come close to the the amount of knowledge and practicle application that he has . We test strength without multi ply suits and wraps . I've also never seen more people doing big weights consistently than with Starting Strength. Best coaching across the board of any system ever .

Powerlifting is strength training just in the competitive form. Watch the video again if you didn’t catch it. I’m not saying I disagree with everything he said in the video. A lot of it was good. @@jdj2022 Rip has regularly highlighted the differences along the lines below. Powerlifting is specific: strength in the SBD in the competitively necessary range of motion. Strength training is done with more lifts (addition of the press, plus a few others such as cleans, rows, and chins) done through the effective range of motion. Powerlifting is competitive and specific, strength training is personal and general.

@@chaseb6728 yes but in order to get good at powerlifting you have to strength train. Someone training for a powerlifting competition is strength training. The powerlifting competition then judges how successful you were of building strength on that lift. And anyone who knows anything about powerlifting understand that powerlifters have to train other movement patterns to bring up their main competition lifts. Most powerlifters regularly overhead press and do pull-ups and rows and why not to build strength. Powerlifter a are strength training. The display of that strength is the powerlifting meet. Are you seriously trying to argue that someone who is training for a powerlifting meet isn’t strength training???

The question appeared to be trying to reach out to an experienced Strength and conditioning coach asking for their general opinion on the potential efficacy of Conjugate. Instead he got Mark saying: It's not Starting Strength Powerlifters suck So do Olympic lifters He doesn't know what conjugate is. He implies it's only applicable to powerlifters but that's just not true. Phil Daru uses it effectively for fighters. Brian MacKenzie prescribes it for endurance athletes in his book Power, Speed Endurance. And Dr Andy Galpin has mentioned the benefits of it for athletic performance. So, just because Mark doesn't care to follow it doesn't mean you shouldn't either.

This is just my opinion, I don't compete, so I'ma just throw this out there as my general observation... Louie's training HEAVILY involves preparation for competing in gear. You can just see it by the way they train. Starting strength does not. That's the most obvious difference to me.

Westside works just as good for raw lifters and he has successful raw lifters. Strength is strength. The only reason Westside was big into equipped is because the time period it got popular in was when equipped lifting was king in popularity. Now raw is getting more popular and you are having some great raw lifters represent west side too.

No. Rip, sorry my friend. You're completely wrong here. Westside Barbell methods can be adapted to anything. The Westside methods are Max Effort, Repeated Effort, and Dynamic Effort. I come from a strongman background. 90% of all strongman competitors use Westside methods. There are some who don't, but most >800LB pullers I've trained with, lived with, and competed against all utilize the conjugated periodization system from WSBB. Starting strength is for beginners. You'll never pull a 900LB Deadlift with that program. The crew I trained with all pulled 800LB or more. Everyone trains Max Effort, switching up the exercise every week, smashing PR's, and peaking up to pull a heavy fucking single off the floor. Give Brian Shaw a call and talk to him about WSBB. See for yourself.

Practical programming has very very firm limits on how far you can go, without explaining how to go about it all. Westside ME, DE and R methods aren’t explained too well without spending money. Conjugate is really anything you want it to be, it’s a crucial problem that people think Westside is bands and chains and maxing out. I feel like that it’s distinctive but it’s not even close to the real important Stuff in the problem. Repetition Method dealing with weaknesses is the important part. Sadly, Westside IS geared lifters on gear but that’s not the point of conjugate.

@@Xplora213 my point is this, any program can be tailored to your needs. PP absolutely does not have firm limits on potential progress, your genetics are responsible for that. The Texas Method can be brutal, just like any other program if you run it long enough. Eventually you'll stall and have to adapt. That's training.

I don't love the answer here. Mark has an exaggerated view on Westside/ Conjugate and not the real take. It's a bit sour grapes and Mark is kinda being just as arrogant as the core Westside guys. Louie was more than what he mentions. He consulted for many sports teams and in a number of areas outside equipped/ geared lifting. Lots of application to strength/ conditioning. Westside had huge RAW success as well.

Back in 1980, huh? You think maybe things have changed since then? I've been to some Olympic weightlifting meets in more recent years and I had a different experience. Is the warm-up area more quiet than what you'd see in other sports? Probably so, because everyone is focused. Powerlifters will hate this but Olympic weightlifting is the more technical sport. That doesn't mean I dislike powerlifting or disrespect the sport - hell I've considered entering a PL meet and going for a "super total." FWIW, I also stay away, far away, from the pseudo-intellectuals. I stick with the coaches who actually know a thing or two about Olympic weightlifting. These coaches, in no particular order, are Greg Everrett, Max Aita, Drew Dillon, Wil Fleming, and Aleksey Torokhtiy. All of these coaches have free KZbin videos on technique and I have learned something from each one of them. If you're listening to any of these coaches and you think they are being "pseudo-intellectual," the problem ain't with them, it's with you.

Having been a trainer for over 10 years and working out in gyms for 20 years, I completely agree with his statements here. Competitive powerlifting seems to draw a certain “I’m angry at the world for my tiny member so I’m going to get even fatter and scream louder to vent my self hatred” crowd. Competitive Olympic lifters love to think they’re elite, as I’d training Olympic lifts makes them a mythological Greek hero
