Joe's back on We Need To Talk this week, and for the third time in the space of the year it's a Stay Or Go about Chelsea. Following on from their pathetic 2-0 defeat at home to Brentford under Frank Lampard's management last night, Poch has got a lot of work to do to fix their current squad - mostly thanks to Todd Boehly's horrific transfers which has resulted in £600m spent to finish in the bottom half of the League and somewhat looking over their shoulder at the relegation zone.
But despite Lampard's quest to be the first manager to achieve the 007 feat in the Premier League, Joe's looking at their team and seeing who he thinks should be kept, loaned or sold. There's 44 players on here so it's a long one - but what should happen to Mason Mount? Do they continue to show faith in Mudryk? Is Romelu Lukaku coming back for one last ride?

Any system where we employ two strikers would fix our attack tbh. Lukaku plays significantly better with a striking partner. Havertz was peak playing as a second striker in Germany. We keep forcing players who aren't lone strikers to be Lome strikers and then are confused why it isn't working

Mount needs to be kept at all costs. I would try to see if Chelsea could still get a fee for Cucurella and keep Maatsen as a back up for Chilly. Havertz has so much potential and I think isn't being utilised correctly so I'd keep him as well. It's a horrible situation the club is in right now, so difficult to make any sense of who to keep, how to play and who to bring in.

Problem you've overlooked is the home grown quota. You've kept 5 players over 21 that are homegrown (Bettinelli, Colwill, James, Chillwell and Sterling) out of 20 players kept. That means that 3 of the other 5 players that you can register end up having to be the u21 players (Broja, Madueke and Chukwuemeka) or some of the players that are signed in the summer need to be homegrown in order to hit the 8 out of 25 players. It really limits what they can do this summer. Plus, I know it's not entirely the point of this, but they're not going to manage to sell 14 players in one window. No club does, even before all the financial restrictions around Europe. So some of those in the sell category will ultimately end up needing to be kept and you end up either not being able to register them, or not being able to sign any new players. I do think Poch is probably the best manager out there for the situation though, I think some of the other names they'd been linked with might be better managers but wouldn't cope as well with the mess that the club is in. Poch has been at Spurs and PSG, he's worked with a dysfunctional board and had signings made out of his hands. Perfect man for the job.

Hey buddy thats not how homegrown works. Its not a quota that state you have to have 8 homegrown. You always get 17 foreign players and if you want to get up to the 25 limit they have to be homegrown or U-21. With hes changes your at 15/17 foreign so your fine

@@4Kamm Hey buddy, if they want to add any players they'll need to still be within the homegrown quota. For example, they've got 5 out of 20 right now. They could add 2 more players and have 5 out of 22, but they couldn't add any more than unless they're homegrown players because then they wouldn't be able to hit 8/25. You can't register 18+ non homegrown players. So if we're saying that the Chelsea squad that is currently on 39 points this season is going to be good enough with 2 or less additions to move back into a Champions League place then sure, they're fine. But I think we all know they need more than 2 new players.

Their defence has been their only redeeming quality this season, and even then that’s an argument to be had. Good recruitment is not spending daft money in transfer windows, but instead spending money on players that aren’t just the most expensive in Europe and maybe those who can secure points in the premier league. @@callum5392 Fernández is not only one of the best midfielders in the world but has potential to be that for years to come, all defenders they bought in were good signings, granted koulibaly and cucurella have been woeful this season, Felix was chased by most top clubs in January, Mudryk is very promising, so is madueke. Sterling at 50 million looked like a steal, zakaria was a decent squad player. All signed for 6-8 years meaning they've spread out the money spent over years. Aubameyang has looked decent when given the chance and a manager that notorious for falling outs with the board and two seriously unqualified managers does not help sp many players coming in. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but despite that about 7 or 8 players have had a decent impact and players like Santos, chukuwemaka and Hutchinson should've been loaned out but look extremely promising

Felix offers nothing really he dribbles just to shoot himself, but then hes not a good shooter. And passing wise theres no creativity, last i checked he was at a 6% conversion rate(i think avg is around 20) and he had 0.9 xA total from 13 matches.

However, the numbers on this loan are just horrendous. The fee paid for the actual return (G+A) is a joke. Regardless, knowing Poch will likely play 4-2-3-1, AND provided we sign a #9, I'd try to keep Felix over Havertz. Mount should be the first priority here, but if he ends up going, and we are left with Kai and Felix to choose from.. It has got to be Felix. Also I think that Nkunku will be deployed more as a winger, probably on the right, over a Madueke that is still very raw. Idk, we will see what ends up happening

i agree. when he was at palace he showed fans exactly what he can do. not only was he an attacking threat, but could also defend. his energy alone was enough to give palace 3 points. but when he came back to chelsea, his style of play didnt fit the team. chelsea like to play slow and find passes to the wingers, which meant that the midfield was sometimes nullified out by this style. however, i do feel like poch knows exactly how to get the best out of him - just allow him space and freedom to roam around the park. i reckon if he stays at the club, he could lead chelsea to many titles.

@Colt awful lot to unpack in this reply. First off, you aren't going to play with a "true" number 6 as part of a double pivot with Enzo. Enzo is defensive enough and likes to sit deep, but doesn't offer a ton of cover in front of the CBs. So, we need someone to compliment that skill set. Call them both 8's if it makes you happy, it's completely irrelevant to the point. Secondly, Kante can't stay healthy. Of course I would choose a 2018 Kante over any CDM in the world, but that player doesn't exist anymore. Thirdly, you need to go watch some Ajax film on Gravenberch. He can't get into a team in front of Kimmich or Goretzka. That doesn't mean he's "not good enough for the Bundesliga," it means he can't get into arguably the best midfield in the world. Finally, bashing young players that have been put into a struggling team under their 4th manager in a season while receiving minimal minutes due to a bloated squad says less about those players than it does about the state of Chelsea at the moment. Elite players often don't work out under those circumstances.

this is a pretty good list. kante works better deep and breaking up play but for whatever reason lampard has him playing CF. i think we'll be good to keep him assuming poch will know how to utilize him even with the injury record. with our luck with number 9's... i say we give lukaku another go cus why not? if we can't offload him or find another striker then we may as well see if a "fresh" start does well for him. mount comes down to contract. i think he's important primarily bc he is a chelsea player through and through but we need more out of him if we're going to be paying for it.

Really great analysis. My ten cents is that Mount MUST be kept. Lukaku should go, but you are right to ask who would take him. Keep Kante even though he is injury prone and keep Havertz. Other than that, I agree with the rest of your choices. But we need to buy a striker as first priority.

I think we keep both Havertz and Mount. I see mount playing the Eriksen role and Havertz as the Deli role (and honestly they could probably play either). If I could only keep one, I would keep Mount. he's homegrown, the fans love him and I think he would be an ideal player for Poch to work with. I also see us keeping Santos if his work visa gets approved. I think him and Enzo alongside each other would be *chefs kiss* for a double pivot Poch midfield (also keeping in mind that we might sign Lavia and potentially Rice if the price is right).

Mount and Kante are the soul and Engine of that football club. You can sell both Gallagher and Kovacic to raise funds - Kante is regaining fitness and has had surgery, bring a young 6 like Lavia or ideally Caicedo as his understudy. You must keep players of this caliber and professional attitude in a situation as bad as this.

Havertz is definitely better than Mount, especially given the money he is asking for. That being said, unless we are able to figure finances to purchase a striker or sort things with Lukaku, I imagine we stay inept at goalscoring and we keep both.

Spot on with Felix. So much money for someone that didn't even prove he's worth the 100m he cost Atletico. As an Atletico Madrid fan, I had no idea why Chelsea wanted Felix. He's supposed to be a striker, but he barely offers anything going forward. He's played 131 games for us and scored 34 goals and has 18 assists playing as a second striker and centre forward. THAT'S AWFUL. This guy cost us 100+ Milly and his value has dropped down significantly. You can't even use the excuse "oh he's young" anymore, because he's literally a 23-year old man. He hasn't developed at all. Statistically he's better as a CAM because he actually helps create pressure and finds the rooms, but no one ever uses him as a CAM. That's at least what he brings to the table. But as far as worst PL loan? I have to disagree with that considering the likes of Falcao to United and Chelsea where he actually was a 265k and 175k a WEEK, Saul to Chelsea and Kallstrom to Arsenal. Funny how 2 of those 3 loans were to Chelsea, and obviously with Felix lol

Havertz is cleary playing the wrong position at the moment, if they manage to get a striker that fits the squad well (or lukaku gets a new chance), I think behind a number 9 he will play better than mount for sure. Mount is asking for too much money anyways and is for sure not more talented in the position behind an established number 9 than havertz.

I’ve cut down a squad but still missing many areas, Kepa, mendy, bettinelli - can very easily c one of kepa or mendy leaving and brining in a first choice James, fofana, badiashile, chilwell, gusto, cucurella, maatsen, silva, koulibaly, colwill - loads of quality defenders, even tho only signed a year ago could see cucurella and koulibaly both leaving potentially. Enzo, Kante, kovacic, santos, mount, Chukwuemeka. Kovacic may also leave, mount has to be sold if he doesn’t sign a new contract but would be a massive blow, I think another cdm is still much needed. Madueke, mudryk, Nkunku, havertz, Sterling. I’m not convinced about Sterling and he could also leave after a season but still think maybe another winger is needed This leaves a 24 man squad and obviously need to bring in a st to make that 25 That means a long list of out goings which may be unrealistic but here they are: Aubamyang Pulisic Felix Rlc Chalobah Broja on loan Zakaria Ziyech Gallagher Fofana on loan Azpilicueta Plus basically everyone on loan the likes of Lukaku Hudson-odoi Ampadu Bakayoko Sarr Etc

I would keep Chalobah over Koulibaly as back up RCB if possible, 5 CBs for 2 spots is needed because Fofana and Silva have had injury problems. If Chelsea could sell Cucurella for over 25m then I would sell him and keep Maatsen. Keep RLC as a versatile squad player and loan Carney. Carney needs game time, not to be 4th choice. Ideally, keep both Mount and Havertz but if one was be sold, for me it would be Mount over Havertz. Havertz is better as a SS or on the right. If Poch likes Lukaku, I would keep him and have a younger striker ready to fill the role 1/2 seasons. If Lukaku leaves, I would sign a more experienced striker and keep a pathway open for a younger striker
