The Steam Deck has absolutely rearranged everything about how, when and where I game. Never thought I'd be seen on Steam during lunch at work. Pretty cool that I can sit down with my feet up on my workhorses and whip out my Steam Deck for a little session.

What I think is most notable is that it reminds me of the sort of Xbox-360 generation of consoles. That's sort of odd to explain but what I mean is that it can play tons of smaller titles that are unique and well made, in a centralized store, with a good interface. It's PC gaming for people who don't have the time or energy to deal with PC gaming.

Those buttons on the back can be perfectly well used for zooming in and out and right/left mouse clicks. Together with the pads for the mouse pointer that makes for a great solution for playing RTS (like C&C) where rotation and panning are on the joysticks. These setting do work quite well for both left and right handed people where they just have to invert said settings if it does not fit your style. I like to play with panning on the right stick and rotation on the left stick with clicks on the right bottom side where the top one is a right click and the bottom one a left click. Zoom is on the left bottom side where the top one is zoom in and the bottom one zoom out. The mouse pointer for me will be on the right side pad as you will almost never do any panning while selecting or ordering groups at the same time. Yeah you guessed it right, I am right handed.

Especially for the model at the top of the stack, it's pretty expensive compared to something like the Xbox Series S (Target has them for $250 w/ and extra controller right now, it's insane), but if you care to, you can do so much more with the Deck. And THANK YOU! I'm just now starting to stretch my legs into making dedicated KZbin videos and that means a lot to me!

It's literally the best handheld I ever owned. Yes it has some jank to it but those jank are from me trying to do something that aren't fully supported yet. The console itself allows you to do it anyway. And some complain about the battery life. But little do they know, it's your choice to prolong it. You are given the tools necessary to make changes to extend the life of the battery by going into setting. While other handheld console doesn't give you any options at all and have you stuck with a slideshow for a game play.

I've had my Steam Deck (256 GB model with 512 GB microSD card) for about two months now since August 10th. It's a fantastic device, and I've been having a lot of fun with it. I think Valve did a great job with some of the design choices. Not only the Deck feels good to hold and you can easily have even longer gaming sessions with it, but it also comes with a bunch of cool features such as the sleep mode. Need to stop playing game suddenly, and there's no chance to save the game anywhere nearby? Just put it asleep and continue later, problem solved! Additionally Valve has been doing a lot of work for features that the community has been wishing for such as 40 Hz setting. They also take note of things that the community does, and may sometimes provide solutions to make it easier for the rest of the community. For example, as far as I know, custom boot animations required a bit of effort to get working but recently Valve released updates so that you can just copy a webm video file in a certain folder, rename the file as deck_startup.webm, and there you have it, that video plays as a custom boot animation. The beta branch is getting frequent updates including both fixes to existing features and sometimes new features. They keep improving Steam Input, and have been adding missing features and in some cases making them better than they used to be. It was great when they added modeshift and virtual menus to Deck's Steam Input. Valve has been continuing pushing out these updates for the Deck over six months now after the launch of the Deck, and it's clearly not just little fixes here and there. It's nice that they show they care. Would it have been great to have all of these features at launch? Sure, why not, but that might have delayed their launch even further and like I said, they have got some ideas from the community because with so many users having a Deck there are likely to be those who use the device in a way that no one at Valve thought about. I don't think the Deck was incomplete at the launch (well, at least in my opinion even though I didn't have it at launch), it may have been rough on the edges but it was still good, and now it's just even better. Valve has also done a good job at keeping testing the games in their catalog. The accuracy of the rating system aside I think they've been doing a good job at getting games verified, playable or unsupported. I see the rating more like minimum working state rather than as absolute truth. Games that are unsupported are a bit of hit or miss. Some of them work beautifully but Valve may say they aren't supported. Those are the kind of games I don't want to take a risk of buying and not have it work but I may install and try them out if I already have them in the library. I pay attention to what flaws playable games have but most of the time I don't feel discouraged to try them out. I expect verified titles to play beautifully on the Deck. It would be a problem if a verified games didn't work as well as promised but I wouldn't mind it if unsupported game works well. Unknown games could be anything so I try to not have too high expectations for those. I think it's cool that Valve does this. I've found use for the trackpads and the grip buttons. However, I've never really been comfortable with using the gyro so everyone has something they can find useful. It's not like you absolutely need every button and input method for every game, but the options are there just in case you need some of them for something. Additionally I like that just like Valve has said, it's a PC, and we have a freedom to do what we want with the device because we own it. I haven't ordered a dock yet but part of that is just hesitation because even without a dock I've been having a great time.

The response to the video overall has been overwhelming so thank you for adding to this experience! But I agree with a lot of what you're saying. Valve has done a ton of work to make this thing awesome and I'm excited to see what happens down the road. I'd never fully replace my PC with this thing, but it could be viable for a ton of people that aren't me! Doing the research for planned videos has opened my eyes to more possibilities with the Deck, and it's very exciting!

some of the reasons you gave are also the main reasons why i decided to get a deck. i have a switch lite but i hate how closed off it is (reason why i turned away from consoles in the first place). i couldn't run android games, emulators, or anything from steam (windows). not only that, but if i bought a game on the nintendo store, i could play it nowhere else except the switch lite. so when valve announced the steamdeck i was excited. i knew it was a pc, but i'm really surprised at how open and easy to use that openness valve has made it. the only downsides i find in the steam deck is 1) battery life and 2) weight/size. i understand both of those are compromises valve made in order to actually give us a proper steam handheld, but if they ever releases a deck "lite", it would replace my current deck.
