Ms has a choke hold on Pc Industry. With both hardware and software (gaming included). Ms has bullied all other os out business or threaten then with lawyers. IBM OS/2 Warp was originally being supported by ms, then they decided it was a threat to windows and they had them shutdown. I still have os/2 warp box somewhere in storage. With zero competition, ms has zero reason for any innovation, thus why windows 11 has become so bloated. We need steam os for some proper competition. And imo steam os/proton (Vulkan.api) is way better then anything windows has ever done. Vulkan is open source. Neither window or DX 11/12 are open source. Valve told all devs back 2015 to use vulkan over bloated DX 12. Nobody listened. They created showed world they know what they talking about. Steam deck/steam os and proton are all proof of that success. And often many windows games run better under linux vs native windows. So yeah I am very excited for when steam os comes to desktop pc. Valve may not openly say they competing with windows for Pc gaming. But imo they need too. My only concern is I hope they have GTX gpu support. As I can’t afford atm to replace my old GTX 1080ti. And we all know Linux Nvidia support atm, though slowly getting better. It’s still hit or miss. With windows 10 EOL coming soon. I hope steam os is out for desktop before EOL of win10.

Actually, they only announced that it's coming to other handhelds, rather than to everything as a general OS. Though, it's coming to everything... eventually, it is something they have said that they want to do when they have the time, but they are busy with other things, like bringing it to other handhelds. So they will hopefully have more time now to finally do it. Also, you can already install it on your own hardware, through the SteamDeck recovery image, but you need to have hardware similar to the SteamDeck, as the SteamDeck version only includes drivers for the stuff that it needs, and their compositor doesn't support Nvidia hardware yet. There is also community maintained Linux distributions that try to emulate what SteamOS will be when it releases, by using the stuff Valve made to get their SteamOS to work, like their compositor.

For anyone "Waiting for SteamOS 3" to try or even switch to Linux, it's important to note that there will likely be nothing a SteamOS 3 will be able to do that any other Linux distro can't already do right now. The only difference I would be expecting compared to other distros is that it would ship with KDE Plasma as it's desktop environment and it will probably come with steam & proton preinstalled. If we're lucky the situation with anticheat will somehow someway become better with an official release of SteamOS but I really wouldn't count on that to happen, especially with just a beta release.

They are advertising it as only handheld, because it only supports handheld for now. They want to bring it to the desktop, but they have other things to do first. When they support desktop use of SteamOS, I assume they will begin advertising about it's desktop usage, rather than just handheld use. But it doesn't support desktop use yet, and their announcement was to bring it to other handhelds, not to bring it to the desktop, that is why they talk about it being handheld.

This is NOT a desktop replacement, if you want an actual operating system use another Linux distro. This is like those kiosk OSes, it's meant for one specific purpose and it just does some other ones well. Valve knows this, which is why they only advertise it for its intended use. The graphical environment in the desktop mode is KDE, a complete desktop environment that Valve as a company has had little role in developing, and is already far better than Windows's.

As someone who has been daily driving a steam deck for the last 6 months… it is a real OS for normies like me who pretty much just use a pc for gaming and browsing the internet. There’s multiple email clients and browsers to select from. But I just keep it simple. Thunderbird and Firefox. Discord and games. It’s perfect for those of us who only use a PC for this type of stuff. The UI is fantastic and you pretty much don’t need terminal for anything. I believe it’s perfect for people who aren’t trying to become the type of Linux user who gets into the weeds. It’s clean and it works.

@@MasterChief0093 That's something that so many people in the Linux community just can't seem to get their head around. That most people want something that just works. They're undermining the very thing that might actually get people to move to Linux. "Pfft, you want SteamOS? You can't even force a stack overflow on the flux capacitor, get Arch." Not realising that all 90% of average PC users need is a browser, some office apps, maybe an email if they don't do it directly on their browser, and some other bits and pieces here and there. And of course in a lot of instances, games too. All of which SteamOS already supports, AND has the backing of a major company with a lot of capital who have a huge incentive to make sure it goes right. The thing that scares most people away from Linux is how complex it can be, and also the fact that there are 5 million distros with very minor differences that makes it overwhelming for most people. Once you research it, there's not that much to figure out. But people don't WANT to have to research which of the 5 million different distros is just right for them. The fact that Valve has thrown their hat into the ring is _huge_ and is going to make it a clear choice for people who just want an OS that does the very limited amount of things that they want to do. Now there's a free OS that can be installed on almost anything, has the face of a major company that people trust, and who also have reasons to make it work. It's not being made by a ragtag bunch copy-left programmers for copy-left programmers. Which is most likely their problem. They see it as a corruption of what they love about Linux, and so they gatekeep whilst pretending to want people to make the switch.

See, the thing is that the SteamOS interface in a nutshell is just Big Picture on top of an standard KDE Plasma desktop, so you can just turn off Big Picture and you get KDE Plasma as-is. SteamOS is probably not gonna be easy to use as a desktop because it's an immutable distro, so you can't easily just install any package you want without some hacky script or unlocking the root partition, but you *can* literally just go into a normal desktop. Maybe when it's finished, there's gonna be some sort of "advanced" edition or something that lets you mess with it like normal distros, who knows.

Almost anything that isn't available as a flatpak can be installed in Distrobox, which is no more complicated than installing on whatever distribution your container is running, you can even install a graphical package manager. Thinking about it, Linux in general is something that screams valve because of a constant: community drive makes good things. Take for example GMod, portal 2's level editor and modding community, expanding that, just the centric ability to mod in the first place. People love modding, taking things into their own hands and strengthening it. Thats what is possible with steam OS at its core, because it was also made by community at every level of its foss pieces, including flatpaks, drivers, game scope and proton. Also launchers like heroic and prism. We can build something cool with them, so as long as we take a moment to also pitch in some capacity, whether its trying it or helping financially

The next Steam hardware survey is not going to show any uptake in Linux. NO ONE WANTS TO FIDDLE FUCK AROUND WITH LINUX!! It will likely show an uptake of Steam OS, in my view this is not really the same thing. I'm hoping Steam will make the OS more user friendly, because they care about people actually using it. But yeah, not on is coming to any other version of Linux, and the survey will list Steam OS as it's own thing too

At some point these developers are going to start putting some respect on Steam OS! I'm hoping we can get some parity in this space, one player dominating for so long is frustrating! ARM on Steam OS 1080p 60fps gaming would be nice! An AMD APU that can give the same frame rates or more with 4-6hrs of battery life would kick ass also. I'm just hoping the performance from these handhelds get better soon!

Why would you want a console UI experience on a PC?
@gr-lf9ul
@gr-lf9ul 14 сағат бұрын
You're so wrong about its desktop use. There's practically nothing that Valve needs to do about that for it to be good, since it's a KDE linux desktop which is good already. You just have to alt-tab away from steam and that's all. Valve may or may not attempt to make that side of it usable via just a controller, like they did back with the original "steam machine", but for its use with keyboard and mouse all the work is already there from decades of linux desktop development that has nothing to do with Valve.

I wouldn't say this replace Windows for gaming, i see this move for Valve more for a console like experience than a PC like gaming experience. Imagine having a small powerfull PC in a console-like formfactor that runs Steam and you can have both console and PC gaming, monitor and TV gaming, mouse + keyboard and controller gaming, all "separate" but with the same library/platform to do so, in my opinion this hurts more Xbox and Playstation than Microsoft with Windows PC's (unless you're counting Xbox since it's owned by them but you get my point i hope). And i'm not gonna lie, it would be awsome, and if Microsoft fells that competition they can just partner with Valve and make Xbox run SteamOS or make that a option and people would buy it, Microsoft focus on the hardware and release of their games and Valve focus on the Software and platform for said and more games. This would bring more people for the Xbox for sure making that competition less of a problem. You say that this would hurt Game Pass, but just think the amount of people that game on a PC, most likely on Steam already, but also have a Game Pass signature, now imagine how much more people would sign for Game Pass when you have even more people inside the Xbox ecosystem. I do think the consoles are dying, but only as we know them and how they are, the future o gaming to me looks more like what a said in the last paragraph plus some even more companies making console like hardware powered by SteamOS or other operating systems that may be developed down the road and less just Xbox or Playstation, with Microsoft and Sony thinking more about the games the publishers they own make, just look at Game Pass and how it works, Xbox is already set to path at least similar to that.

STEAMOS ISIN'T MEANT AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO WINDOWS. STEAMOS ISIN'T MEANT AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO WINDOWS. STEAMOS ISIN'T MEANT AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO WINDOWS. Valve literally said that. SteamOS could become the "home system" for techie creatives. The home computing space was a mix between gaming and creative applications previously filled by the C64 and Amiga. For a while BeOS had that vibe, but they had to pivot. That space wasn't filled by Windows because it was too business and dull, not by Linux because too complex and fragmented, not by Apple because too limited and expensive. When SteamOS becomes the best environment to run games in and run applications for audio, video, graphics and 3d modeling, possibly even support the demo scene, then they might own that niche. As much software moves online that OS for high performance stuff may be the only relevant niche left.

This notion that Steam OS will enable everyone to switch from Windows, needs to stop. This is just a delusion. Literally nothing prevents you from switching to Steam OS like OSes now and they will have newest drivers, linux kernel and support, faster than Steam OS can ever have. Steam OS updates take months, Bazzite and the like update in days (after new driver, kernel, anything really, is released, even proton fixes, for example glorious eggroll has fixes and changes that are not in official proton builds). Steam machines will not be a thing because it requires corporations to work with Valve, they can't just install Steam OS, they need to spend money to make it happen. It is not worth the hassle for them. Maybe few companies will do a test run, to find out what demand there really is for such devices. You will probably see CN brands all over it, minus the official branding. Lenovo will for sure have one, they already are paying Valve so they will probably make the best of it. That said, to ditch Windows you need to familiar yourself how to use linux. There is no magic OS that will just one click work as a replacement. Steam OS won't be it, it desktop experience will be on pair or worse than already existing linux desktop environments. Why? Because valve does not work on linux desktop, they pay small team from KDE to do that.

7:10 On the next survey? Nah. You're crazy. If it's just 5%, it'll be the biggest success project Valve will have ever worked on. And if it can just _keep_ that 5% for a year, then Windows needs to step in and do something _really_ quickly or it _will_ lose a metric fuckton of users. Steam os should work well with nvidia, I use linux with nvidia. Steam OS will be a push for nvidia to do more support. AI already did some with Cuda. The desktop side is covered. A lot of the "productivity" things either ignore the whole proton layer and just need drivers (that proton needs), and a window manager which the steam os has. IF that is not enough, then wine/proton is what it needs which the os has. They focus down on what is weak right now, which is marketing, and running windows software.
