Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

CAN WE GET SOME FUCKING BACKGROUND CHECKS!?! Is that too fucking hard to ask!? I think its common fucking sense to say hey you have a criminal record, mental issues, etc sorry you can't own a gun. How does that not make sense to people?

Some California senator proposed a bill that would ban people on the FBI watch list from buying guns. The shooter was not on the list at the time, though he was in the past. This bill could not have stopped this shooting, but it is common sense. If you are happy that we are fixing this obvious problem, then allow me to destroy your remaining faith in humanity. He proposed this bill after the San Bernadino shooting. It failed. NRA opposed it.

Here's a question: Why does anybody actually NEED an assault rifle? I can understand the need for protection, but NOBODY NEEDS AN ASSAULT RIFLE. Why are they legal?
@elephantwarrior53
@elephantwarrior53 8 жыл бұрын
Yes. You need an assault rifle! For example, if you are at a gay night club and you want to shoot 49 people quickly you will need a powerful weapon. A better question would be: If you need an assault rifle to do something, is there any situation where that thing is good? The answer would then be: not unless you are in the military. As for why it is legal, people don't understand the original meaning of the 2nd ammendment. It is about well regulated malitias. They need guns, and we need them to be safe. It is now just a waste of paper because those malitias are no longer necessary for the security of a free state. We have a professional military.

Imagine you live on a farm or a ranch in the Rockies somewhere and the average response time for police/sheriff is over an hour. You have hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of livestock, machinery and equipment. Let's say somebody wants to steal that and you happen to come upon them in your truck. They become violent and start firing upon you. Sounds like a good time to have a little firepower at your disposal. Okay. Let's try another one. Say you live on the border with Mexico. The giant ass wall Trump built didn't do a whole lot of good and you have cartel members and/or human smugglers try and take refuge in your house as they hide from Border Patrol. Sounds like a great time to have a bit of firepower at your disposal as a good guy doesn't it? Here's a big one for the Texans out there. Many areas of Texas are infested with hogs. The problem is that they compete with native wildlife populations as well as livestock; and they do considerable damage to farmland. This causes billions of dollars of damage for the farmers and ranchers. These things breed as fast as you can kill them too. The problem is way beyond tradional hunting where the rancher might go out and shoot two or three pigs and fill his freezer. Commercial hunting is becoming big business because it is way more cost effective to pay hunters to kill as many as they can than to let the hogs destroy the land. Many of these hunters use semiautomatic and full automatic guns to hunt with. When the goal is to kill as many as possible, this is the best way to do it. As a side note, obtaining a full auto firearm is legal but it is a royal pain in the ass and is expensive as hell. Not exactly in the means of most would be mass shooters. Bad shit happens in the world and if you refuse to accept that it does and fail to be ready for an eventuality, you are going to be on the losing side of history every time. At least one way you have a fighting chance. If you don't think the Mexican cartels are a problem, that they don't possess the ability to bring weapons in to the country or that they pose a legitimate threat to people they encounter, then you my friend have failed to have a basic understanding of the situation in the Southwestern United States. Now, the assholes toting AR rifles around town don't have a real need to be doing that, but there are people who legitimately need rifles that are effective at intermediate distances that can be reloaded quickly and are quick and easy to operate. Not everybody in the country has the same lifestyle and some people in this country have lifestyles that are worlds apart from yours. The sooner you understand that, the sooner you will understand that the situation requires a more complex solution than just banning a certain kind of gun. As a military veteran who carried an M-4 or sat behind an M240 for seven years, I would say I am familiar with these weapons. My rifles are all bolt action at the moment; I have no intention of buying a semiautomatic rifle, but I do firmly believe that some people have a genuine need for them and that they ought to be available to purchase if the required background checks clear.

+Machine Learning Yeah, that's the Second Ammendment. These folks don't agree with it. They need a better argument. Also, I want to know why the argument has to be about the Second Ammendment. If it still holds truth today, we can discuss it using truths applicable to today and leave 200 years ago where it belongs. We put more faith in to the thinkers of the Renaissance and Enlightenment eras than we do on our own critical assessments of the situations of today. Here is one for you all. Are democratic forms of government really the best form of government we have thought up, and if so, are there better ways to govern today? Democracy is so sacred to us that we refuse to think critically about it. Just some thoughts. I am a gun guy but I don't think the Second Ammendment is a very useful argument for either side because it assumes that the people who wrote it were right without addressing if they were right and why or why not.

The only answer is to ban the sale of semi-automatic assault rifles. They are not needed in civilian homes. You will never encounter a situation where you will use an assault rifle outside of a practice shooting range.

Why is a civilian allowed to legally purchase a weapon designed to kill so many people in a short amount of time? It makes no sense to me when this problem frequently occurs. If having to pay $32.000 on the black market for a gun like this discourages even one terrorist to buy it, then it's worth changing the laws.

stephens new show allows him to be such a better host. I always preferred The Daily Show before because Jon Stewart was able to give very passionate speeches on what he cared about, but Colbert had to stick to his character and be outlandish and over the top. With his new show, I love the personality he has, and it feels like its actually him and not a character, and that allows him to give such great segments, especially this. Simply moving.

Wow! good show Colbert! In 2015 we had 372 mass shootings in which 475 people were killed and another 1,870 people were injured. A total of 13,286 people killed by firearms and another 26,819 people injured. Sounds like a war doesn't it? More people killed in our own country than in the wars we fight abroad. We are upset when servicemen die but when our own citizens are murdered we become complacent. Who has more freedom, gun manufacturers or the people who have been promised life, liberty, and a pursuit of happiness?

CJ, The reason Why Americans make this an issue of hate is because We are Cocky as fuck. Muslims Have nothing to do with this.... Infact They have on multiple occasions have said "this is not our belief". And for most of the incidents, People outside of the Muslim Faith have not not heard that....In fact those peoples words have been falling on Deaf Ears. and because People in America are too dumb to understand that, we judge the whole religion as a whole for the actions of a few Radical few.....and the biggest issue is that its mostly Christians who do it to the people, and its because they are both arrogant and Ignorant of that simple truth.

1.) Generalizations about a group of people need to be supported with hard evidence. Homosexuals are not automatically perverts. 2.) Calling Islam a death cult is the equivalent of calling a sports stadium a torture chamber. Number 1 also applies to this. Not all Islamics are mass murderers. 3.) Falsely accusing someone for being involved in an event when they weren't, especially an event with negative effects or consequences, is called slander, and when written is called libel. Both are illegal. 4.) The secretion of liquid from the eyes is in response to the persons emotions. Although these emotions can be controlled and manipulated, it takes years for someones mental psyche to have deteriorated to that point. Furthermore, it takes a large amount of stress over that period of time to have this effect. This persons social studies teacher most likely has not had the time nor emotional strain necessary to accomplish this.

Death cults don't have strict rules for when to murder. Islam does (When it is insulted). Therefore, it still stands that islam is not a death cult. 3.) The events you are talking about are small period, high intensity events that shaped them for that period of time. The effect did not last once those experiments were done.

Looking at things in a completely neutral sense I think two things need to happen. 1) We need to introduce mandatory checks for guns, if you want a gun i'm 100% fine with that but if you're a mentally unstable person you should not be in position of easily acquiring a firearm. I believe there are some bad people out there who may want to harm you and/or your family and you have the right to be protected, but we should not just turn a blind eye to the fact that getting a gun is much easier than it should be. Owning a gun is a huge responsibility and those gun owners who are responsible should not be punished but rather we should have ways to try and determine to the best of our ability who wants to do harm with weapons and who wants to protect themselves. 2) We need to stop putting our hands in the sand, this was an Islamic Terrorist who inspired through readings in the Qaran (their holy book) committed disgusting and atrocious acts. I am not saying that every Islamic person is a terrorist which I know some of you might be thinking but what I am saying is we need to take a critical view of the religion which seems to be a common factor among these terror attacks. Obviously there is a problem that needs to be looked at closer with that religion, all religions should be critiqued and closely looked at but right now this is the religion that needs the most critique and analyse to figure out and stop those who are becoming inspired by it to commit terrible crimes. Of course no solution is perfect but burring your heads in the sand and sprouting hateful speech towards gun owners or Islamic people is not the way forward. We need to accept there is a problem with guns being so accessible and we need to accept there are those who take the Qaran literally and wish death upon gay people. There are good gun owners out there just like there are good Muslims out there, you can't accept one and not the other, you are not a hipster liberal if you want tighter gun controls the same as you are not a racist because you critique Islam.

I think we also must recognize that no religion if free from violence. ISIS is still mad that we left piles of severed hands on the streets of Jerusalem (1st crusade). People used the Bible to justify slavery. The Christian/Jewish/Muslim God killed a city for sodomy (ironic, considering why these people were killed). The Greek/Roman gods were violent. Buddhism is probably the only trult non-violent religion. Luckily, no one follows holy books. They pick and choose whatever will support their pre-esisting morals.

He was radicalized by ISIS propoganda, not the Quaran. He was a Muslim scense birth, and untill 9/11 he was a decent person.

When you're talking trying to stay neutral in an argument like u stated, please refrain from stating your opinions and stick to the facts. This man, Omar, carrying a middle eastern name, was not a Muslim. He never prayed, went out and get drunk in bars, and was the cause of a lot of domestic violence. Stop scapegoating a certain religion or race because the media brainwashes you into thinking this was the cause of a certain belief. The only thing that drove this man to commit such an unforgivable crime was his own beliefs. I know you trump supporters are ignorant about many of the things happening in the world, gaining knowledge from Fox News and are victims of media bias, but I urge you to promote peace instead of hatred. Stop blaming an entire religion for the actions of a few.

Good comment the thing is in many cases people just can not personally distinguish between a general comments about a Muslim vs a wider comment about the pervasive effects of political Islam. We need to be frank and honest but still people want to look at colourful lights, sing songs, give flowers and place candles, what good does it do?

In the face of the comments section erupting in gun control debates and more of the same outcry over others opinions, I just want to say thank you Stephen. You are so right. We need to actively love and dispel hatred in this nation and not sit back in despair letting more hate seep in. Your message really encouraged me. Thank you so much. My prayers go out to the families and friends of the loved ones lost in the Orlando shooting, I can't imagine how hard it is for them right now. To those donating blood and money and help, you are an inspiration. Loving as a verb is so key in our country right now.

Well said. Touching to see so many people across so many platforms, especially ones like this that usually focus on satire, pausing to honor those we lost, as Stephen says, with "outpourings of love." Thank you for your eloquent response; I wish more people saw the world this way. Then we might not have people like Trump claiming to represent us...
