During the Golden Days of Bodybuilding it was not just about as getting as big as you possibly could and to hell with the consequences; it was about creating a physique which was supremely athletic, muscular, strong, and healthy.
In the mid twentieth century, one of the greatest and most athletic physiques belonged to Steve Reeves.
Many bodybuilding aficionados see Steve Reeves as one of the finest examples of what the human body can achieve without the use of anabolic steroids.

I’ve been doing an Old School workout for years, which is really 3 days a week or every other day. I’ve followed Reeves, Ross, Park etc. My best advice is to limit your workouts to compound lifts cutting back on the number of lifts. Focus on strength rather than size, old school lifters were for the most part very strong people. Most of these workouts involve 12-15 lifts with 3-5 sets per lift. My personal favorite is Clancy Ross’s routine as he incorporates Locked Arm Raises (like a snatch), Barbell Cleans and Deadlifts. These workouts are great for the guy or girl who can only get in the gym 2-3 days a week due to jobs and family .It will keep you generally fit and healthy.

Altide Svensson You mean ya never tried it or if ya did it was to hard so ya didn`t stick with it . Full Body Routines are now very popular and Steve Reeves is still as popular as ever because his Physique was not Bloated by Steroids . Clancy Ross used a full body routine ,Reg Park used a Full body routine ,John Grimek used a full body routine ,Marvin Eder used a Full body routine ,Reg Lewis used a full body routine,Jack Delinger used a full body routine so what is washed out about these old time strong men ,if it worked then it would work now . Split Routines became popular when Steroids came on the scene

It is true that it's usually not a good idea to copy someone's specific workout, you can learn from it though. There is a difference in accuenting certain bodyparts . Broad shoulders, narrow waste, legs not oversized , more upper chest, but in proportions. That's the keyword, by the way ;) . Also there is a difference in the way the oldschool builders approached training. Not only in the aesthetic and ratio (and thus the silhouet), but also in the general outlook on training. It was a healthy way of life . They were also as strong as they looked, in a functional way. So a different style of training and a more sensible way of eating will make you more muscular; but in a different way. And ofcourse , your genes will dictate a certain way, but you can play with that , to an extent (i.e. if you have a broad waist and narrow shoulders , it would be more over head pressing and rowing , for example .as opposed to doing squats to a lesser degree, and more sissy squats for legs , which actually also accentuates a more inner part of your leg. Never neglect the squat or deadlift though ;) . A sound mind....

My old roommate was 6' and well over 300#. He never worked out. He was blessed with "twitch muscle fibers". He was the strongest guy I ever met. He could lift anything. He was a mechanic and left the car keys in a car on a lift. He asked me if I could get the keys? I told him" I need a ladder. Suddenly I started rising in the air. He had bent down, grabbed the heels of my boots and lifted me up and said, "Can you reach it now?". Speed? At the street races, nothing was happening so I asked if anyone wanted to foot race my roommate for $20? A hand went up and a young thin guy stepped forward. When I yelled go, my roommate was gone and this guy couldn't catch him. It was a short sprint, from light standard to light standard. After the race, the guy paid off but screamed, "THAT"S IMPOSSIBLE! I'M NCAA SPRINT CHAMPION!".

A great vid for young and old alike,,,,just keep it simple,,when I worked in a gym I got folk doing squats, bench press, deadlift a,shoulder press, curls, sit ups,and once grown work on lagging parts,,,,,,,,at 50+ I'd rather stay in shape year round,,no supplements as way back used creatine,gabba,HMB,Nor19, tribulus,,,,,,,,yes they all work for sure,,,,,but again to be maybe 10% better is it worth £100s per month,,,,in my 20s,30s,40s yes but at 50+ my priorities have changed and back injury has limited me with free weights,,sure I miss deadlift a,squats, heavy shrugs,,,,,,,, but happy to have got this far and use lighter stuff through necessity,,,,,,as said yesterday so glad I found your channel again,,,,,also found some rusty Reg Park discs,,got them sand blasted and painted in Hammer it's smooth blue, same as weights I used in Gladstone gym where Bertil Fox trained in his early days,,,the other gym I went long gone was Slaughters opened by our then local bodybuilder Albert Beckle's I never met him but met his ex wife,,,I was in my 80s loud weights pants and she came up to me and talked weights,,,by then he'd long gone to America,,,,,,,,well now I found your channel I'm gonna revisit your vid's,,,,,i got a bench, leg attachments,,,restored weights and a lil pit 7ft by 4ft to get back into it,,,,,,,,,,I luv old weights,,,vintage stuff,,owned a Pontiac GTO Judge way back,,,and watch American box sets Hawaii 5-0,,Cannon,Columbo all good stuff,,have a great day,,,

There is no doubt genetics played a big role but all the body builders had a similar look back then. So the old school look has got to have something to do with routines, diet, drugs etc. steroids were pretty limited back then but I've heard the d bol was top notch quality. They seem to all have been on a higher fat lower carb diet too

Reeves' last contest was 8 years before "dianabol" was even synthesized. If he took anything when he was competing, it wasn't that. (There's actually no indication that he ever took any type of drug, although multiple people with zero evidence & an equal amount of brain tissue continue to insist that he did.)

If Steve Reeves was alive today he would Boot Lee Hayward in the Round Ones . What Lee hayward said here about Steve Reeves using a split routine is complete Bull Shit as he was against any type of Split Routine because he said it did not work as a Human Body works as a Unit and must be trained that way . Steve said Training more than 3 Days a week is over training so lee your not an expert and don`t try to be . Training on a full Body Routine gives you a certain look that a split routine will not give you as everything flows together . Steve Reeves would never had looked the way he did on a split Routine . The first man to have have 21 inch Arms without the use of Steroids was Leroy Colbert and he had the Exact same opinion about Full body training as Steve Reeves and also said your Body works as a Unit and should be Trained as one .Both Reeves and Colbert said that you must Rest the Day after training to let the muscles Grow ,even if you trained half of your body one day and rested the next day and trained the other half of the body on another day you would never achieve the Flow and look that a full body gives you . Lee hayward should have said to the Kid give the Full Body Routine a go and see what happens .One thing that Steve Reeves always did was to Start his Routine from the Shoulders down to his Calves ,as he believed that the Blood flows down from your Deltoids and then to your Chest and then back and then Arms and then Legs and finish with Abs . This Routine works but is a tough workout so ya must take a Protein drink and sip it while training to keep up energy levels .

That why I am glad I started doing the blood and guys approach of true oldschool bodybuilders like Leroy colbert and Steve reeves. When I started the gym again about almost a 1 1/2 years ago, I did splits. On every “split” one muscle group was ALWAYS favored over the others. Dor example I did an arnold split with chest and back one day, arms and shoulders the next, and legs the last say before you repeat. My legs got so over developed it wasn’t even funny. Now after doing full body and not training like a steroid bb, all my measurements of my ligaments are perfectly symmetrical and my legs no longer dwarf everything. Its crazy how we basixally already figured out everything almost 100 years ago and yet there are still people today trying to sell snake oil as a revolutionary breakthrough in fitness.

The perfect guy would be pretty close to the body of Steve Reeves, charisma and humor of JFK, endurance and longevity of Jack LaLanne, speed of Usain Bolt, mind of Terence Tao or Nikola Tesla and disease free. Not all that far-fetched in the future with DNA designer babies. The question is, is it ethical?

1934 - A group from the University of Amsterdam purified testosterone from bovine testicles in a manner similar to how Koch & McGee had. However, it wasn’t until three European pharmaceutical giants - Schering, Organon and Ciba - began serious, full-scale development and research programs (in the 1930s) that testosterone was truly isolated. 1935 - A group in the Netherlands was the first to isolate a few pure milligrams of testosterone. They identified the hormone in a May 1935 newspaper article titled, “On Crystalline Male Hormone from Testicles (Testosterone).” After determining the hormone’s molecular structure, the Netherland’s group named it “testosterone” from the words testicle, sterol and the suffix of ketone. Butenandt and Hanisch created the first synthetic version of testosterone from cholesterol in August of 1935. Synthetic testosterone was made available to the medical community for experimentation and treatment purposes. 1939 - The Nobel Prize was divided equally between Adolf Friedrich Johann Butenandt (for his work on sex hormones) and Leopold Ruzicka (for his work on polymethylenes and higher terpenes). These men were the first to discover how to synthesize testosterone from cholesterol. * Only Ruzicka accepted the award. Butenandt remained at home. 1950s - Scientists discovered a longer-acting form of testosterone and could tailor the effect of the steroid to be anabolic or erythropoietic (to stimulate red blood cell growth). These versions were used to increase strength through increasing red blood cell production. Testosterone could only be given by injection or by a subcutaneous pellet. The hormone was ineffective if taken orally. 1958 - Doctors began to inject testosterone into ill patients to help them regain their strength and gain weight.
