I spent a couple of week working with Spanish mountain troops in Kosovo in '03. They liked our U.S. rations because they were light and you could break down the parts you wanted to carry and just pull it out of a pocket whenever you had a moment. They liked them for lunch. The Spanish meals were more sit down affairs. We would mix the two in the morning and have a sit down Spanish meal for dinner.

I think that was not at that time What I see, the quality of the food hasn't changed at all. It was, and is, of high quality. It was exactly the same food that you could buy in any food store or spanish supermarket, only that the can was another color, the characteristic olive green, in this case for the spanish army. But the product was the same By the way, what you put on the cookies is condensed milk. In Spain it is really common to drink coffee with milk for breakfast sweeted with a bit of sugar. Our coffee use to be more concentrated than american coffee. The condensated milk is to mix with coffee: you get your traditional coffee with milk and you don't need to add sugar because concentrated milk is already sweet. Squids cooked in their own ink is a tradicional food in spain. When the squid is little we call it "chipiron" and it is really common to cook them filled with the tentacles with a sauce made with their ink or tother kind of spiced sauce. We also use to cook the ink from cuttlefish. There is a dish similar to Paella that is rice with seafood and coloured with cuttlefish ink: "Arroz negro" (Black rice) . Ink from squids or cuttlefish gives a really good taste to dishes Related to this kind of "Pate", we don't use to eat it directly. The most common is to extend it over bread slices to eat it in that way , or extend it between to bread slices and do a sandwich Quince jelly used to be eaten as dessert in combination with cheese. the "granurality" is because it is good, withou chemical additives. Quince meat has this granurality. If quince jelly has a a smooth jelly texture it means that the chemical additives are higher

Jake Hammaker hehehehhe the food is really good! It will get repetitive, but same as with all the rations, once you are In the military for 2 or more years and there are only 5.menus of each meal... But the soldiers are pretty happy with it... It's healthy food also, and no need for bran tablets like many rations do because you have a lot of veggies, chickpeas and the cereals which have a lot of fiber... Also, the dishes that are in the rations are typical Spanish food, "grandma food" we could say, so it is comfortable too...

That ''fat'' thing you found in the POTE GALLEGO its called ''TOCINO'', next time have it with spreaded on to bread... SO TASTY AND DELICIOUS :) Im glad you liked it

Meatballs and "peas". I live in Spain and those canned meatballs are very commonly available. Had them quite a few times on lazy winter Sundays, that Fabada (a white bean stew he had for lunch, the fucking thing is delicious, tho the most common regional variant the Asturiana doesn't have any spinach in it). There's also a simple meatless canned chickpea and spinach stew that is absolutely ridiculous. Spanish canned food is remarkably good, it's an occasional guilty pleasure I have.
@Huma2704906 жыл бұрын
One thing is Fabada and another Galician Stew ( Cocido gallego), one is from Galicia and the other from Asturias. Those " spinach" are "grelos", a tipical vegetable in the Galicia-Asturias food. you should try a Galician Stew, but be sure to be on winter or your stomach will melt XDDDD.
