This was a fantastic video!! You communicate are clearly, You show the steps involved, you describe how various mechanisms function, you post close up illustrations and you are obviously experienced and knowledgeable. Thank you for posting this, it helped me and I am sure it will help others! I am dealing with the aftermath of hurricane Sandy and have a number of 25"+ oaks to buck. My MS360 is "leaking oil at the pump" with little oil getting to the bar. I now have a better chance to fix

Hi. On 025 the oil pump is still driven by a quill from the clutch drum, through a plastic worm drive to a small pencil pump. Check quill and worm dive after checking the bar oil hole and oil in tank. Extreme cold can make chain oil too thick. To get to pump remove black exo-chassis. Remove plastic union between bottom of pump and tank. Take out pipe and clean filter and tank. Use case screw threaded into bottom of pump to remove pump. Careful as holes in pump side must line up with case holes.

Good video. I am updating my ms 260 to ms 260P specs. I already have a new 44.7 ml cylinder with deco valve and a fully adjustable carb. My 260 was made in January 2006. Besides being filthy, it has not been used a lot. It has an 18 “ .325/.063 chain on it (RS).

Hi. It could be the filter in the tank. It doesn't take much to reduce the flow to this type of pump. Either take it out as described or empty tank and wash out with parafin or diesel. This should clean the filter also. It was common to get problems if veg oil was used as chain oil. It crystalises. So have ago at washing out the tank and maybe flushing the system with thinner oil. Hope that helps and prevents a strip down. This is a common problem with 017 & 018 saws. I should do a video.

Andy, got my 026 running fine. I am going to put an adjustable oiler on it instead of it’s direct drive. I do not like fixed jet carbs, so I am going to replace its carb with a 026 Pro carb. I may throw some new seals in it but my can of break cleaner says they are not leaking. However they are something to consider on a 25 year old saw. I am going to replace both big AV buffers. The rear one was damaged when the tree fell on it. I put a new Oregon ProLite bar on it ( .325, 050, 67). I would have stayed with 3/8 but could not find a rim sprocket to fit the sprocket, locally. It starts and runs fine. I found a close paint match for Stihl saws- Ace Hardware, Appliance Epoxy, color code Biscuit. It might be an half a shade lighter but a pretty good match. I am not paying $20 for a can of the Stihl stuff when I can get it from Ace for five dollars and change.

I bought a crash damaged 026 the other day. It had a tree dropped on the rear handle and it busted the gas tank, rear handle and that was it. I have a new gas tank on order. It will have the flippy tank cap but that is OK with me.I cleaned it up and it was filthy. After some cleaning, I squirted some two cycle down its throat band pulled it over. It rolled over, so I gave it another squirt and it ran for a few seconds. I have been doing this every day for the past week and it seems to run better and longer each day. I still need to clean up the clutch side and will do that this weekend. I will put the new rear handle on it when it comes in and put on a new air filter and air filter cover, later. Today, I am going to connect a long piece of fuel line to the carb, put a new filter on it and stick it into a container of good two cycle. I can control the carb because the throttle rod is still hanging on the carb. I want to see if the carb is working fine and I don’t have to rebuild it. I can always cut it off by grounding the kill wire to the metal spring, which is still on the saw. The kill wire is still attached to what remains of the control lever. I am glad to see the oil pump is similar to all my other big Stihl saws. I will pull everything off the clutch side and clean it up, lubricate the parts before I put a chain on it.

Hi Yes you are correct on the occasional user saws the chain brake centring spring is just a flat leaf spring. They wear and the only thing is to replace the spring. Easy to do and the part is not expensive, from memory it has some bends in it, and fits in a recess in the case. I have just started a series of videos on rebuilding a Stihl MS230 but it might be some time before I get round to the chain brake. Hope this helps.

Hi. Watched you video. Hello. I have only ever sold bits of this model, but I remember that the oil pump has a flat face on the back and retained by several bolts. There is a gasket in this joint. I assume that the hole in the pump drive wheel gives access to these bolts. The old type sprocket mounting does wear, so best change it for the new design, but only when the original is worn out. Good price on the spring. All the best.

Thanks for your appreciation. The Stihl oil pumps rarely give problems unless clutch damage has created physical pump damage. The leak will most likely be in the discharge pipe. All the best.

I always put grease on the worm gear, in and out, so it is lubricated when it contacts the oil pump gear.. when I put the sprocket on I always rotate it enough to fill the worm gear arm drop back into the sprocket. If it does not drop in the sprocket it will be almost impossible to get the sprocket washer and E clip on the end of the crank.

The most important topic is the adjustment screw! You have to set it initially and be able to demonstrate how to make sure that the oil flow is set after use to be balanced with the fuel use..

Hi. You are talking here about the oil flow adjustment screw. The early 026 saws do not have this. The setting is depenent on the size of the bar and hence the number of drive links as well as many operational variables. Cheers, Andy

Great video. I have an 028. The chain brake is not working. The chain brake band loop came off the linkage post. I think there should be a little clip on the open end of the post to hold or stop the brake band loop from coming off. True?
@TheInfoworks
@TheInfoworks 11 жыл бұрын
Brian, sorry I don't recall. However if there is a shallow groove on the end of the post then a circlip is required. On the 026 a clip is required to keep the rocker in place on the pivot, otherwise the brake band has a tab on the rocker end and a curl end that fits in the casting. Could it be that a bit has broken off your brake band? Sorry I cannot be more helpful, but thanks for the appreciation of the video.

Get it running and use it, that way you will find out how good it is. If a saw has been stood for a while the carb can gum up and it takes some use for things to bed in again. If it does what you want it to do, then no point sending any more cash on it than necessary.

Remove the bar, and hen see if oil is coming out its orifice or not. If not then continue checking the supply. Put some pressure with air into the oil tank, 3-5 lbs, see if any oil come out the output to bar orifice. If yes then check the drive pinion gear and the pump gear. You should be able to rotate the pump, driven, gear by using small screwdriver to see if oil is being pumped manually. The driven pump gear rotates the top of it towards the body or counter clockwise. If you still get no oil then make sure the oil pump pinion engagement arm is actually connecting with the clutch drum and making it spin.

Andy, good morning. I have a question. There were two oil pumps used on the 026. The non adjustable one and the adjustable oil pump. My 026 has the type 65 non-adjustable oil pump. If what I am seeing on the IPL is correct, the metal worm gear turns based upon the tightness of the distance between the worm gear, clutch and sprocket, as retained by the washer and E clip. It does not use a standard arm on the worm gear. The adjustable one works like other Stihl oil pumps. I have the non- adjustable one and my sprocket does not have a notch in it. Please tell me how to assemble this model. Thanks.

John, the early 026 and most of the 024 saws had a direct drive oil pump that ran all the time. The later pumps are driven by a quill that engage with the notch in the clutch drum. This is so that the pump only runs when the chain is running. I don't know if these are inter changeable, cheers
@johnclarke6647
@johnclarke6647 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheInfoworks Andy, they are interchangeable, but you have to add a washer and spacer on the crank if you go to the adjustable oil pump. I cannot say it runs all the time but mine will dump oil out the opening with the engine running. It has a little steel gear that slips in the oil pump and on the crank. It is not a tight fit. When I got this crash damaged 026 it did not have a clutch or sprocket bearing, so I do not know how it was set up originally. I have a new clutch ordered and it will come with the big washer, which I will put on over the worm gear and then spin the clutch on. I will then put the rest of the parts on and see what happens when I crank it up. I may buy the parts and update it to the adjustable oil pump, quill and sprocket. I will grind a notch in the sprocket, which is a 7T rim sprocket. I thought it was a late 026, since it had the short tank vent but it could be an early 026. It’s Sn is 243xxxxxx.

@@TheInfoworks Andy, I understand, now. Had just never seen a full time oil pump on a Stihl. Never owned an 024 or 026, before. All of my Stihl saws have a worm gear driven oil pump. It is a good little saw. I needed a light Pro saw to go along with my big Pro saws. It came with an 18 inch bar but I am going to put a 20 inch bar on it with some LGX chain. I thought it was a late model 026 because it had the short tank vent on it. If it cuts good I will put a good carb and oil pump on it.

@@TheInfoworks Andy, they are not interchangeable. You will need a washer and sleeve to bring the crank diameter up and change the spacing for the newer adjustable oil pump to fit the 026. I will do this pretty soon. I am going to put a climate controlled carb on it, too, and change the air filter and air filter cover to the newer Ms 260 style. Difficult to quantify. There are different qualities of saw within a brand. Occasional user, semi professional, and professional. They all have differing plastic parts. It's the same with Husqvarna. Plastic can be tougher and lighter than steel or Aluminium. The cheaper end of the market has plastic parts to the crank case as seen in the Husqvarna 350 videos. No real answer to your question.
