This vid is jumping around the actual issue: the yellow foam seal around the knob is too thin. Just put another one over it. Problem solved, no silly improvisations!

That was some good engineering right there. I have had my Husqvarna 550 Mark 2 for 2 years put 70 hours on it ,lost a crank bearing ,Husqvarna warrantied it. I Love the saw, some time I would like to get the 562. 👍🇺🇸🌲

Good idea, I put a 1/8" thick oil and fuel resistant neoprene washer behind the OEM gasket, sealed it up and made it much tighter. Internet was buzzing about the 1/16" washer under the OEM gasket, but still too much play in my opinion when I studied the design of it. I gave a washer to a buddy of mine yesterday with his new 500i, he dropped three trees and cut them up, not a spec of wood or anything made it past the foam gasket. Now with that said I am concerned with our fixes to protect the carb / internals, we might wear out the filter base locking bracket out and will require the air filter base to be replaced in a few years of cleaning or servicing. 🤔

Pool noodles are what's known as "closed cell" foam. It floats, and doesn't breathe whatsoever. Other foam is open cell, like the prefilter on some equipment. If you're going to do this, make sure you use closed cell, otherwise you just make another filter fines can get thru. Great idea if you have this saw. I've used grease to make a seal better before, and used a sliver of garden hose as a spacer. Haven't yet utilized a pool noodle lol. Maybe someday.

So the problem with this filter is fines bunch up in that middle hole of the filter, and that seal is not tight enough to keep it all out letting small particles in from the top, not the actual filter. Some people rub grease there, some put an extra plastic vasher, and others use an o-ring. This "filter" he made is genius, and should in theory stop particles from even getting to the top hole which is the problem area. I believe this will do just fine

Thank you, Tim. I am going to try this trick on my walk behind equipment because the wing nut backs off frequently. I do not like grease being exposed to getting touched, maybe this will work for that application.

Tim, on my 460’s I have the found that a Cat D ring will fix the fuel leaking as well. Remove the factor o ring and replace it with the D ring and it seals much tighter. Be careful with the grease on the noodle. Some oils will eat foam.

There is small rubber o-ring under filter top side. Also there is no point in pressing filter more down because filters bottom seal doesn't work in that direction.

Thanks for showing tip, as people who already have Stihl's 500i will sure want to avoid getting fines in motor. That said, I still find it completely unacceptable people have to jury-rig air filter on the most expensive per cc saw on market. Not sure why anyone who''s been warned about this defect alone would buy a 500i? Moreover, there are other systematic defects you and other youtubers have revealed. Thanks again

Now if we can get someone to find a good hack to the gas and oil caps. I have a stihl weedwacker that has that style of cap and I would spend 1 minute filling with gas and then the next 5 minutes trying to get the cap to turn all the way so the top flipper would snap down into the grove where it is supposed to go. otherwise the flipper on the cap instead of fitting into the grove, doesn't line up with the grove and presses on the lip of the tank opening and forces the cap up preventing a seal.

The 500 seems to be a great running saw. However, a $1400 saw should have the filter system sorted out, not leak fuel, and have some sort of air injection system. This is not a saw from 1968. I'll stick with the smooth as silk 572xp which has none of these problems.

It's a bit misleading, the proper seal is the rubber ring on the filter that slides over the round shaft housing when you fit the filter on, what tiny dust goes down the back of the filter won't go anywhere.. it fits snuggly over the housing I have no problems with my 500i. The biggest mistake is when people yank it off without giving it a slight dust off or by being careful as the dust can fall into the intake by accident and you may think that's the filters fault but it's not. Top tip, open the choke (unless you have 500i) before you take off the filter this will close the intake and run less risk of dust entering the engine.

@@6900pilot exactly. I have 2-500i’s and haven’t had an issue with fines getting in. I’ve been cutting mostly dead ash which has a fair amount of dust for a hardwood

Yep using this one. I also used a bicycle patch(s) too act as shims and a old bicycle tube. A in a pinch,if it works, can ya laugh at it. Never crossed my mind to use a piece of pipe wrap. Be safe everybody.

It’s a shame Stihl won’t fix these air filter problems , the 661 is the worst saw ever made as far as air filtration goes. Wake up Stihl and get rid of these junk filters.
