I am a huge fan of all Still Austin products because they are exactly what you two discussed: interesting. With so many distilleries out there that aren't always separating themselves much from each other, I appreciate that I immediately know I am drinking a Still Austin product. their products become a fun discussion with friends I share with. Cheers!
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
This one certainly is interesting. I'm going to come back to it in a few months and see if it changes. The people you share it with is all part of the experience. Cheers!

I love the way you guys bounce opinions off of each other. Besides the ABV, the Longer maturation of the Eagle Rare might also account for the ethanol being better integrated into the whiskey. I have a bottle of the Summer '23 Red Corn BiB bottling. Burnt orange peel, tons of apple and caramel on the palate. It is thick, smooth and sweet. Same saturated flavors you refer to.
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
When my sister is on i think it's more conversation based than review based. This release was not as thick or viscous, but the saturated flavors were off the chart. Cheers!

Love the video y'all. You need to try our 5 year Blue Corn Bottled in Bond, to satisfy your sweet tooth! Cheers.

When you make good stuff it's easy to make good videos. If I can get the Blue Corn in my area I'll give it a try. Not sure if I've ever seen it. Cheers!

Love Still Austin. I have the Muscian (burbon) and the Artist (rye). I also have the CS but all I get is cinnamon & spice from it. Water helps but I'd rather have the Muscian.
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
I had the cask strength the other night and I'm with you on the cinnamon and spice notes. That's pretty much all I got. It was good but not very complex. The cinnamon was the dominant note for me.

This is right in my wheelhouse. Rich, funky, complex, viscous, with just a little sweetness. I can’t do the Buffalo Trace low rye #1 mashbill like Eagle Rare and EH Taylor. They’re cloyingly sweet to me. The SFTB and wheaters are where it’s at. Cheers, y’all 🥃

Wait! Mary isn't perfect! Damn, those weird idiosyncrasies lol. Oh and then live math too. What an episode, wait was there a whiskey in this episode?!? I haven't had too many Still Austin bottles. Only the regular bourbon CS and a couple store picks.

Oregon finally got the Still Austin 'The Musician' 98.4 $50 haven't seen one yet. Would love to try the cask strength version. $80 for this BiB is a bit steep for my budget but thanks for reviewing. And yes I do prefer 8-12 minute videos, lol.
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
We certainly get to talking and videos run long. The Cask Strength is a good bottle. If you get a chance to try it I'd recommend you do so.
@paulm74922 күн бұрын
It's interesting that you compare this whiskey to Clynelish and Craigellachie single malts as those are two of my favorite Scotch whiskies. I have not tried this BiB bottling, but I do enjoy the rest of Still Austin's standard line-up, with their Cask Strength bourbon being my favorite. I think they should find a big, deep cave somewhere in the Texas Hill Country where the temperatures are less extreme and they can age their whiskey in a more gradual manner, as I think the quality of their spirit deserves careful aging.
@whiskeyisajourney22 күн бұрын
I really enjoy Clynelish and Craigellachie as well. In fact Craigellachie 13 was my runner up Scotch of the year this year. Video comes out tomorrow.

Complex bourbons buck the trend of bourbons being the Nickleback of whisky. Reminds me of Old Elk. Yes.. I did intend that play on words. And yes I'm still here.
@tonylastname6468Ай бұрын
.. I also have a couple Eagle Rare.... in Canada? What?!
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
I like/liked Old Elk. Got burnt out buying too many too quickly. Drank them over a short period of time and have not drank then since.
@tonylastname6468Ай бұрын
@whiskeyisajourney too much of a good thing, eh? But the real question, did you like my elk buck pun?
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
@tonylastname6468 Did you really need to ask? Of course I did. 😜
@Aphabet21Ай бұрын
4:13 to be a straight bourbon, it has to be aged 4 years or longer. That’s why their other offerings aren’t straight Texas bourbon I believe. I could be wrong or missing something, obvious no additives and all the other requirements for bourbon. But yeah, I think that’s what’s up.
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
That sounds right to me. Thanks for sharing.

This same 5 year old release was on of my favourites! I believe the 5 year old had "High Rye Bourbon" on the label. I'm not seeing it on this one, but by your taste description, sounds like it is still a high rye.
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
High rye would be my guess as well. Cheers!
@b1gsteve251Ай бұрын
It is high rye, 25%, and is on the back label.

A problem I have with Still Austin is a lack of consistency. I have 2 single barrel Still Austin picks that are great, but the batched Cask Strength they released to the Maryland market was awful. I've tasted their red corn and blue corn Bottled-in-bonds and they were ok, but were mixed bags. I want to be a fan, but hard to gamble on a brand.
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
Inconsistency would ruin it for me as well. I don't blame you. Cheers!
@BigShay1977Ай бұрын
I don't know if I had a bad bottle, but the SA Cask Strength I had tasted like you were drinking really good whiskey out of an ashtray.
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
Yikes! That doesn't sound good at all. I didn't notice, but does SA use natural cork?
@BigShay1977Ай бұрын
@whiskeyisajourney I didn't check either and my bottle is long gone now. Very possible that was the issue. I hear Texas whiskey is generally smokey, but it was just way too much...and no one else mentions it. Oddly enough you couldn't tell on the nose, it was only a palate thing.
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
@BigShay1977 interesting. When I get home today I'm going to check and give it a taste. I'll check back in later.
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
It has a synthetic cork and tastes fine. I get a ton of cinnamon and a little vanilla. I wonder if you got a bad bottle, but not sure what would have done that if the cork is synthetic.
@BigShay1977Ай бұрын
Thanks so much for checking that! I'll see about getting a pour at a bar before buying again.

I love still austin but disliked this alot. This was very different from everything else I have tried and I have been to the distillery. The cask strength, blue corn, red corn, and rye bib are all excellent. I did not care for their blue corn malted limited edition.
@whiskeyisajourneyАй бұрын
Good to know. Tasting the CS after having this I can see what you mean about it being very different. Cheers!
