My dad served as a SNCO in the middle east during WWII, and there is no way on earth that a soldier on guard duty would have been so slovenly: he would have saluted using his rifle and never dared speak to an officer in such a manner. As an ex squaddie in the British Army myself, I can categorically state: this scene is utter bollocks.

Any army I should think. I can't think of any situation where a lowly enlisted soldier can talk that kind of shit to an officer. Even an SGM adds sir after telling a Lt to piss off.

@@TheAKgunner What rubbish!. Even in my time in service, during the sixties and seventies, (when discipline was not as severe as it was in the time of WW2) it was unthinkable that you would address even an NCO in that manner, let alone a commissioned officer. A guard/sentry has the duty to restrict access per the orders he has been given. He also has the obligation to be respectful to those of superior rank, and maintain good order and military discipline as laid out in the Kings Regulations.

Was Sterling demoted to Lieutenant from Captain ? If not, why do his uniform epaulets have holes where a third pip has been removed ? Officers buy their own uniforms so Sterling’s tunic is unlikely to be a hand-me- down.

Behaviour so far from reality it is comical. The sentry wouldn't speak or behave that way and if he did an officer would have had him detained immediately.

I served as a sentry in a war posting. One rule was that you always outrank any rank that approached you. Another rule however was that you always have to be courteous and polite.

@@bettyswollocks4255 the book SAS: Rogue Heroes (the supposed "basis" for the show) is the best source. And I do agree with the fellow. This series does some extreme disservice to history by debasing some real events for the sake of "drama". Paddy Mayne was turned into a violent drunken tug whose uneducated status was mocked by Stirling (he was, in fact, highly educated - although a little bit scary), and Stirling himself was turned into an arrogant clueless teenager (he was an rather humble but unorthodox leader who disliked pulling rank or class on people). Plus, there is the whole debacle with the raid in Torbruk being totally stupid in the show, instead of just following the damn book.

The girl is quite authentic actually. There were thousands of women from the Caribbean and the colonies the traveled to England to join the ATS, WAAF and WRENS. And the North African campaign was one of the first overseas posting for ATS and WAAFs. Not to mention that all of the women's organizations recruited locally. So I'm sorry if history and reality doesn't conform with your racist world view. But fortunately, the right side won the war.
