Fun Fact: Marie Antoinette was actually not as bad as history makes her out to be! If you want me to clarify I can, but apparently while hse did spend quite a bit of money while commoners were suffering (which, to be fair, a lot of nobles did in France back then), she was used as a scapegoat despite not being that bad of a lady

@@pillowfullospiders3934 Fun Fact, a lot of the French back then did not like Marie for her Austrian blood, even though her marriage to the king wasn't exactly her choice (it was to secure a peace treaty between Framce and Austria). She and her husband, king Louis XVI, were only teenagers when they married, and Louis was already pretty ridiculed by French Nobles because his grandfather, King Louis XV, considered him a loner. Since they were both teenagers when they married, French Nobles and the royal household were frustrated they couldn't produced heirs right away, which was the start of many negative opinions that would form about Marie and the King's reputation. I could talk more about Louis later if you want, but right now I'm gonna focus on Marie. Obviously, there are two things that Marie's associated with: lavishing in riches the country didn't have and the phrase "let them eat cake". First thing, that phrase above, is something she never actually said. Supposedly, the phrase was said when Marie was told of her subjects not having any bread to eat, and she said it in a callous and sarcastic way that fueled hatred for her and caused her to be a symbol of the French Nobles disregarding the poor. This goes to the second point: lavishing in riches the country never had. While it is true she was quite the spender loving the queen lifestyle, it is important to note she wasn't the only Noble who did this. Almost all the French Nobles were spending money at the expense of the poor (with the exception of Louis, who wof much rather spend his time tinkering away), she just happens to be the main face of it. It is also important to note that while she did spend a lot of cash, she was actually much kinder than the media was portraying her to be, and she was described as being extremely friendly to almost anyone who crossed her path

At the end of the day, everyone can enjoy animation. Some people just need to stop labeling it as mature or not for the intended audience, because everyone can find some enjoyment from the media. Pokémon is aimed at kids, but mainly adults who grew up playing it talks about it. People shouldn’t be judgmental about what others like either, it creates unnecessary stigmas and barriers.

Pokemon Sun and Moon has some great emotional episodes that I don't think I'll be able to forget. Episodes like the Stoutland that helped mentor Ashs Litten dying of old age, Ash and friends spending time with a pokemon that has the lifespan of a fruitfly and having to deal with it slowly fading away, and One of Ashs friends regretting her last words to her mother only to finally be able to thank her mother. Sun and Moon has a lot of filler that can be a slog to get through but those specific episodes are what make me glad I stuck with it. I then watched the Pokemon I Choose You movie and hated how they handled the death of Luxray as just a way to flesh out one of Ashs forgettable companions but that's just me.

When I was in college, I was doing a media course and one of the lessons my lecturers gave us was about target audiences and I remember, quite clearly, how that lecturer showed us a clip of Up's opening and then asking us who the target demographic for Up was. And so many of the people in my course kept going 'everyone, it's for everyone' because most of the people there were around 18-19-year-old men who _really_ didn't want to admit that they liked shows that were made for children. That lecturer shut them down completely, telling them that, quite frankly, the movie was made for kids. And people kept trying to argue with him about it but he ultimately won out because you can't write a movie for everyone, you have to pick a target audience

People are way too focused on the whole "what is the meaning of life" part of Soul, so much that they don't pay any attention to the character arcs and the actual story. Same thing with the "depression" part of Inside Out, the "mid-life crisis" part of The Incredibles, and the "letting go of the past" part of Toy Story 3 and its inferior sequel. Technically true though it may be that Pixar films aren't _just_ for kids, they are still for kids. "All ages" means "ALL ages", "the whole family" means "the WHOLE family", and nobody at Pixar has ever so much as implied otherwise. ...Except for Brad Bird, fuming the flames of the whole "OhHh It'S nOt a KiDs MoViE" thing, completely unironically, making a clown and a fool of himself in the process.

Cars 2 slaps to this day... Jokes aside, one if the biggest problems in media as a whole is that children are somehow starting to be treated like they have the same emotional intelligence as a potato. For no reason at all, people like to pretend they don't feel anything beyond "sad because rainy today". That's a lie. Let them understand this movie because the way it is presented makes it explicitly able for them to comprehend. They CAN pick up on things. They CAN understand issues like emotional distress BECAUSE in these movies it is made specifically so THEY will get it. And the movies are 100% better off for it.

Agreed. Now I wouldn't show a kid an R-rated movie, but a lot of bad things happen in this world, and there are a lot of sh*tty people. And by infantizing children of all ages, not only are you not trusting them to process heavier themes and think critically (so they never might learn to), but you also shield them from something that might happen to them and when it happens for real (either still in childhood or as an adult) they won't have had the mental 'practice' to try and handle it. And that's why I have taken the initiative and am training myself to say 'I don't know, let's find out' and to admit when I'm wrong.

That part where you said that adults don't know how to handle nero-divergent kids, I have a lot of personal experience with that. My little sisters (both 6) get a lot of crap from my parents because they're always on they're phones or addicted to sugar despite the fact it's their own fault because they enabled them to become addicted to those things. My parents know how to take care of their kids but they flat out don't have the patience for it and refuse to go to therapy because they don't want to admit there's something wrong with them. I know my sisters aren't actually difficult because it takes little to no scolding from me for them to get the message. All I have to do is teach them why what they're doing is bad and be patient. I act as their parent so often that I've flat out called them my kids on some occasions, and treat them as such. My parents aren't like that though, especially my dad. And I clearly can't raise them on my own because I don't have the time and I'm 14! My parents' handling of my sisters is so bad that I'm genuinely worried for my sisters' futures. Not to mention the fact that I'm possibly autistic and have multiple mental disorders but they don't take into consideration that I dissociate often and I'm too depressed for school work and just say, "Well, you should do more". I'm sharing this to let you know that, well, you're absolutely right. A lot of adults are stupid and don't know how to take care of kids. Also as a word of warning: If you're a parent, be a parent. It's not as a hard as people make it out to be.

all of this shows that anyone can be a parent but not everyone _should_ because then you get children growing up in horrible situations and often having to do what you do, raise themselves and their younger siblings, to be a parent, to raise a kid for 18 years and probably more because their still your kid after 18, you need patience, empathy, and a lot of understanding and if you dont have that then fix that before you ruin your future child's life

amazing as always. I will admit, the nuances of 22 story flew over my head as well. Perhaps because being an adult now, naturally I gravitated towards Joe's story, but yeah 22's story is just as important and it's a shame that it isn't as acknowledged because it is so real. People underestimate and ignore children so much sometimes, and it sucks. I'm glad not all children's entertainment has fallen into the manchildren's clutches yet. Off-topic, but not really since you mentioned Teen Titans Go. I don't like when those Manchildren say that more light-hearted, silly shows shouldn't exist either. Yeah, good, deeper content for kids can be great, but not everything needs to be intellectual. Kids deserve dumb fun as well. Both kinds of content should be able to exist. I think we all sometimes enjoy more mindless content sometimes i.e memes, vines, tiktoks, etc. So why kids can't get that, I do not understand.

Sadly people like these that say "Is not actually for kids" never going to change, because first they will need to accept they like kids stuff and this offends them deeply, because they like to think of themselves as superior and with high intellect, this is why when these sad sacks discovers that anime exist they almost cry on "Finally a cartoon not aimed at kids!" and think that liking anime is a personality trait and start to complain how western animation should be more mature and appeal to adults when their "adult" animes are immature and extremely tropey

I also remember talking to my peers about similar rather "morally complex" characters. Children do understand this stuff, just in a much simpler form. I work with preschool aged children and though their articulation is even more simplified than a 6/7 year old, they show signs of understanding "muh complex morality" in media. There's an excellent video of a therapist analyzing Inside Out, and he shares a wonderful anecdote of how his very young daughter said a memory of hers was "blue and yellow", akin to the memory in the movie.

Okay, I haven’t seen Soul but judging by what you said, I already love 22. I remember my school REALLY didn’t help me when I was diagnosed with autism and despite they thought I was a hard working student, whenever it came to my interests and hobbies they just didn’t give a shit. They hated it when I drew in my sketchbook in class, blamed my mother for being a bad parent because I was drawing gore at one point and they thought me drawing with a black pen meant I was depressed. YES REALLY. I made a PowerPoint presentation about why I love MLP as a way to talk about social outcasts and they threw it back in my face cos they thought it wasn’t educational. Even when I was making mascots for our school houses (granted they were all MLP ponies but they should’ve at least told me to rethink the designs to make it original) and they just threw it away. When I was being harassed by an ex classmate they just gave me a little kids Internet safety book when I was SEVEN-fucking-TEEN. And even when one of my own classmates called me the “class r****d” on FB, no teacher found out about this or say anything about it. (Tbf i should’ve said something but I was a coward back then but still they should’ve At least CHECKED THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA AND SEE WHAT THEIR STUDENTS ARE POSTING) To sum up, I was literally infantilised. I was treated like a precious babby who should just listen to what the adults say and not embrace my hobbies cos they’re not educational and as such grew into a very insecure, immature woman and I’m still now recovering from all the hell secondary school has put me in. So yeah 22 sounds like me when I was at secondary school and it’s depressing how this clear and obvious message to parents and teachers about how they should treat children is completely ignored cos I NEED VALIDATION TO WATCH A CHILDRENS FILM!!!!

When I saw Inside Out, my first thought was "I wish this movie had come out 15 years ago" because I grew up in an area that actively didn't believe kids could be depressed unless they were abused in a way that adults acknowledged. Everything else was seen as 'attention-seeking' and therefore something to be punished, not helped. And Inside Out was out there calling them the fuck out on that while validating the hardships that kids go through and proving that they don't need their own super tragic backstories for things to get that way. Inside Out is 100000% a kids movie that adults need to learn from, not the other way around. I haven't seen Soul yet because I'm not sure I'm emotionally prepared for it, but it sounds like it's very much the same. Something that kids will absolutely relate to and that adults desperately need to actually learn from.

Pixar was my favorite studio growing up and it was because of one movie. Toy Story 2. The Arc Jessie goes through I could relate to very much as a child having been abandoned by my family at a young age. Inside out is also for kids as it's my kids favorite movie, and he uses the characters to show how he's feeling (nonverbal autistic ) This Video really touched me because I've been hearing how soul is not for kids but having seen it and 22's story I can't help but think how it is for kids and how kids who have been abused can relate to her. I know my 10-year-old self could. I mention this because I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. People who have been abused as kids even as adults ( my experience ) look for things that can relate to that to heal. For me, the music in these movies the characters, and these stories were a way for me to thrive in an environment I wouldn't have. While that is sad Without these influences I shudder to think where I would have ended up. These movies were a way for me to express my feelings in a safe way without further abuse and without appearing weak as a child. TLDR: People who say pixar is not for kids.... Why do people think kids are just unable to think past the level of a newborn? Honestly we constantly grow in both mind and body and some kids problably could handle ir understand most of these themes if the parents let them think about it and question it... but i guess thats just my own "opinion" and not actual experience or thought RIGHT?

Adults feel this deep desire to return to the validating feelings of their youth, provided by the studios they love. So when a movie comes along, of course they want to still be the targeted audience. They can't get with the fact that their not the ones meant to be reached, their the ones the message is being sent to. Instead of superimposing their own selfish interpretation of a deep and meaningful piece of art and ripping away the emotional depth, changing the symbolism and blatantly grabbing at the last shreds of their innocence they need to realize that they're the ones in the wrong and work up the courage to come to terms with kids' ever expanding sense of self, and the roles they play in helping them navigate life. Just stop grinning stupidly as Pixar repeatedly beats you over the head with this message with film after film because all it shows is that you need to fucking. stop.

Yeah, I agree on the stupidity of this. Like, have you people never heard of a little concept called 'appropriate for all ages'? As in its safe for kids but also engaging for adults? Not to mention, even if its target audience is children, that doesn't mean adults can't like it. Maybe it's because I'm Gen Z but it feels like claims like this stem from insecurity. Despite what people say, they're still really insecure about being an adult into "children's" media. I just find the entire thing pointless and dumb.

The way I see it, Pixar Movies are for everyone. For kids by principle, but push those limitations with deeper themes that most kids media won't touch, and engaging stories, to a point where it's enjoyable and fun for adults too. They're moreso family movies than kids movies. This has definitely become more apparent as the adult Pixar fanbase has grown over the years and the movies themselves have grown up a little in their storytelling or done things specifically FOR the adult fans, notably the ending of Toy Story 3 being a sendoff for the fans who grew up on the first two. That being said I wish the people in my generation (no doubt Avatar-Brats) would stop hoarding these movies as being "just for us and nobody else" because it spits in the face of the PRIMARY audience of kids... Lose the kids, and you lose most of the people watching the movies in the first place, you can still enjoy these movies regardless of your age, but keep in mind you're the secondary audience and the movies aren't made specifically for YOU. It's comparable to something like Doctor Who, a show for everyone but primarily targeted towards kids, and that was a show that didn't NOT pander to kids sometimes. Watch Remembrance of the Daleks, there's some pretty messed up stuff in there but I would still say it's good for kids because of how it handles the themes. TLDR version, it's ok if kids see things that they don't fully understand and ask their parents about

People who gatekeep children's films are the ones who think kids are dumb and that's fucking rich considering the fact that they watched these same films as kids and loved them. It's almost like they think they were super smart by getting the message of a pixar film and kids these days don't have the intelligence to do so. It's the fucking boomer mentality they complain so much about and the fact that they are doing the same thing with straight face is comical if not really REALLY sad.

I think another issue is that people dont think children can understand "adult" topics and themes. There are some anime I watch that are targetted at children and they can handle some deeper and more complicated themes. But when they "adapt" them to a US audience its turned into the equivalent of waving something shiny in front of children to keep their attention. Just because something is for children doesnt mean that its devoid of meaning.

This. Your comment is on spot mate. I freaking knew there was something pathetic about those “adults” and even some teens who keep claiming that any great quality entertainment from kids media should be for themselves “only” and not for everyone of all ages. As if those are the same people who keep on saying that kids media should be great and can be mature and not being dumb down for kids since they are not dumb, but all of a sudden when a content intended for kids is actually great and appealing for all ages, those grow ups complain that the content from kids media should be for “aDuLtS OnLy” and not for kids or should I say not for everyone of all ages. Like Gravity Falls is a great cartoon kid show that appealing for everyone of all ages, yet a majority cringeworthy adults and some teens say that show is not for kids and should never be viewed and enjoy by kids. Kids media can literally have maturity and multiple emotions in it. Scariness can actually be acceptable in kids entertainment media, just not on the level of r-rated or some pg-13 horror movies. I’m willing to bet that most kids(from the school age in elementary) would definitely want a fun scariness in their entertainment media since kids are not babies.

Yeah I've always found some people's attitude towards children (or as they often call them: "crotch goblins") disturbing. I understand that the pressure to have children because how can your life be meaningful without them is stupid and can really wear a person down, but never take that out on children. Like seriously I sometimes read about people that want to throat-kick literal children because they are loud and annoying at a restaurant or something, and then it's applauded as a relatable thing, what the actual fuck.

Thank you for saying this! I am not neurodivergent but I felt SO MUCH with 22. I have a problem with stuff like school to the point where I had to redo maths for 3 years while also trying to do college at the same time and let me tell you my emotions got out of control, I was sad, stressed, angry and lonely due to the fact that I felt so stupid because all my friends passed these classes that I was having so much trouble with. So when I rewatched the movie and I picked up on that, I felt like I was about to cry. Joe talking to 22 and helping her figure herself out was so revealing to me that someone actually helped her! I was 22 in that scene! And now that I was able to pass my redo Maths I feel like a ginormous weight is off my shoulders! And people saying that kids can’t understand this film is really annoying, I’m glad people like you and Cell Spex were able to see that too

YES! Frankly I think people who claim that something as undeniably made for kids/with kids in mind as a Pixar film 'isn't for kids' believe so because they talk down to children and take that as the norm. Pixar doesn't, at least from what I can remember, ever bring up a theme and go "Oh, you wouldn't understand". Movies like Pixar's often aim to invoke feelings that /make/ you understand.

After Soul came out I saw an article that talked about how the movie should have focused more on Joe and his culture because he's the first African American character Pixar made, and that 22 shouldn't have been as big a part of the film. It irritated me, truth be told...I love cultural diversity and cultural competence in films, but it almost felt like it would have gotten in the way of the story, in this case. I think you said it the steven universe video, that world building is fine in it's place, but when the world being used is our own, we don't need to explore everything. Also, I hate it when people treat kids like untrained dogs that can talk. "Don't bring your kid anywhere if it's going to inconvenience me!" "I'll kick your kid out of the theater if they talk!" "The story's too complex for children!!" Kids are mini humans learning to navigate the world!! They're smart and clever and amazing!! They're still learning self control and how to express themselves in a constructive manner! Their emotions are a LOT for their smaller bodies so sometimes it overflows and they need help! They're amazing and to treat them like mistakes or inconveniences makes me incredibly angry! And to the people complaining about kids attending a kid's movie; if you can't handle kids in a public space, you shouldn't be in public spaces.

I think that Pixar movies are for everyone, they always have been. It’s just that people are picking and choosing the parts that they like and can empathize the most with and neglecting the parts that they don’t, I watched Soul the first time and felt it had a bit more maturity than last Pixar movies but I never considered it not for kids. I hadn’t ever considered what 22’s story was trying to say and I only looked at how her story affected Joe’s which I’ve now recognized is a problem.

As a kid pretty much Rileys age, I understood everything in inside out. Mainly bc its the kind of stuff I go through. I have issues with handling my emotions and feel like nobody cares about how I feel, especially about moving houses (I recently moved two states away from my best friend who was my biggest support beam. She kept me sane). So the argument that "kids are too dumb to understand," is invalid. Some kids, like those from 3-6, might not fully understand, but they'll get the core message.

My dad put me through a lot of shit growing up, but he had his good things. One of those good things is the stories he told from his time as a teacher in an underfunded school; one where there were a lot of "troublemakers". He always said he was simply calm with these kids, didn't put up with them being disruptive but respected them as people, and gave them work to their level (rather than "ah who cares you're too dumb to get this anyway" which is... just disgusting but far too common) and help where needed. He says that one of these kids, at the end of the last year in school, came up to him and said, thank you for not giving up on us, even though we misbehaved. It sticks with me. These kids are "troublemakers" not because they're bad, awful, evil kids. They're annoying, and you refuse to give them basic respect and hurt their future because you got annoyed. They deserve better. Children are people, and far too many people seem to just... not see that.

I am sick of people who act like kids can't enjoy or understand emotional moments in films. A lot of people have this idea that kids will find any movie that isn't a loud, colorful slapstick comedy boring. And yeah, little kids do have lower attention spans than adults and in general kids prefer comedy to every other genre so that idea came from somewhere, but it's still really condescending for adults to decide what is and isn't too smart and mature for kids. People talk about Coco, Inside Out, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Soul, and Up(and some other Pixar movies, but those six are the main offenders)like they're too smart and emotional for kids to get at all and I find that really laughable because I watched three of those films as a kid and liked them. With The Incredibles, I didn't know what a midlife crisis was, but I got that Mr. Incredible was sad that he wasn't a superhero anymore and that he found his job really boring. I obviously couldn't relate to Mr. Incredible's struggles, but I understood it well enough to follow the movie. With Ratatouille, I also couldn't relate to the characters because they had adult problems, but I still found the movie entertaining, I could follow what was happening, and I got the overall message that creativity and doing what you love to do is good. I can see some kids finding Ratatouille boring because it has a bit of a slower pace, but I know little me didn't. And then there's Up, which was actually my favorite Pixar film for a very long time. I saw that movie when I was eight and I remember understanding it perfectly. In fact, it might have been one of the first films that really emotionally moved me(welp, I'm getting too sappy). But no, apparently when I was a kid I just fell asleep during all the scenes that weren't funny because all children are stupid and too sheltered and delicate to understand the concept of someone being sad because their wife died. And this is just pure speculation, I haven't asked a child about this, but I think Soul, Inside Out, and Coco might be easier for kids to relate to because they all have child protagonists(child-coded in 22's case)who deal with things that are issues that a lot of kids deal with(strict teachers, moving, and controlling parents respectively). It's actually kind of ageist when you think about it. Yes, kids are young, naive, inexperienced, and they don't know much about the world. They're still emotional beings who are more aware of their surroundings than some people give them credit for. What I'm trying to say is if you say kids can't appreciate Soul, you probably know less about kids than you think you do.

I fully agree with every point here except 1. I can agree with the tweet you showed that said that you shouldn'd watch incredibles 2 without watching 1 first. nothing about stuff being for kids or adults, just watch the original before the sequel. animation is for everybody, sure there'll always be some things that aren't appropriate for certain groups (no pre-teen should be watching South Park, I'm sure you'll agree with that much) but having a little mature humor or an idea that'll go over kid's heads is in no way an indication that it's for adults, it simply means that the people making it acknowledged that adults may end up watching it (parents with their kids for example) and did some stuff to ensure that it'll be bearable for them.

I never understood why some people think that all movies and series have to be either for kids, or for adults, and never for both. Adults and kids are still both intelligent people at the end of the day, and there are plenty of things that both can enjoy. The only thing that you achieve by saying that a movie is "not for kids" is essentially gatekeeping, and the same thing applies when you say that something is "just for kids". And I have no idea what the point of that even is. Why wouldn't you just let all age groups have fun with a movie that is specifically made in a way that all age groups can enjoy it? Does a movie become more enjoyable if you imagine it as "too mature for children" in your head? I certainly didn't need to do that to have a good time watching things like Finding Nemo or Gravity Falls.

THIS THIS THIS RIGHT FUCKING HERE!!! THIS IS THE REASON THAT LILY IS THE ONLY ANALYST I ACTIVELY WAIT TO WATCH MORE OF!!! This is by far the apitamy of actual beneficial content. I cannot tell you how many times I was treated as having a disorder because I didn't fit into a niche little box growing up or how my feelings about something were invalidated because " I haven't lived long enough to understand " so often how I was told " children are to be seen not heard" to the point that now as a 21 year old I vehemently and with passion will tell someone what exactly their problem is making sure that they know as an outsider looking in I can see and narrow in on their BS tjrougj unbiased eyes. How in highschool when the children of my homeroom teacher would come into class in the morning I would actively talk and listen to them when my classmates would act like they were a nuisance as if they weren't once kids who simply wanted to express how they felt. I still struggle with invalidating my own emotions at times but I am glad that I didn't let that toxic may of behaving bleed into how I treat others especially children. The foster care system for me growing up was just trying to find me a place to live till I was the states problem never actually addressing my actual issues and not until I grew up nearly on my own did I progress as a person. I even revisited my old foster home to see how things are only to find that half of the kids I lived with are either homeless or having trouble with the law. But I digress.... The point is that I love Lily's work and I'm elated to have found a content creator that influences me beyond just being entertaining.

Also when I hear people say a film (meaning a TV show or movie) isn't for children because there's actually some emotional depth or the film goes into some serious issues or because the film is capable of appealing to adults as well, I keep on getting the feeling that those people don't believe children deserve quality content. For example, Avatar: The Last Airbender had some heavy topics and quiet moments. The fire nation was filled with nazis and they showed POW camps and raided villages. I was about 6 or 7 when I started watching that show and I remember the episode where Aang and the gang went to the Eastern Air Temple and he found Gyatso's corpse, and I remember getting goosebumps from that scene. Some kids will watch whatever you put in front of them, but they can tell the difference between good films and bad films
