I don't get how someone could say even Joe's storyline wasn't for kids. The pressure to have something to aspire to is forced on kids from when they're, like, five, and it only gets worse the further into education they go (we had the idea of GCSEs potentially shaping our whole lives drilled into us when were in year 7, which is about 11-12 years old), there's plenty of anxiety over the future and what they'll make of it in there.

Paradoxically as a culture we're so hung about protecting them. Like yes, we should, but it's often used as a political tool "THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN!" and like you said they're treated like lesser beings. They're just young and learning. What's equally annoying is typically those same adults tormenting children very likely were tormented as kids. It's like the moment they became "adults", they decide "yeah I'll treat kids as poorly as I was when I wad a child". Which is the same thing that happens in generational conflict. Fun Fact: Marie Antoinette was actually not as bad as history makes her out to be! @@pillowfullospiders3934 Fun Fact, a lot of the French back then did not like Marie for her Austrian blood, even though her marriage to the king wasn't exactly her choice (it was to secure a peace treaty between Framce and Austria). She and her husband, king Louis XVI, were only teenagers when they married, and Louis was already pretty ridiculed by French Nobles because his grandfather, King Louis XV, considered him a loner. Since they were both teenagers when they married, French Nobles and the royal household were frustrated they couldn't produced heirs right away, which was the start of many negative opinions that would form about Marie and the King's reputation. I could talk more about Louis later if you want, but right now I'm gonna focus on Marie. Obviously, there are two things that Marie's associated with: lavishing in riches the country didn't have and the phrase "let them eat cake". First thing, that phrase above, is something she never actually said. Supposedly, the phrase was said when Marie was told of her subjects not having any bread to eat, and she said it in a callous and sarcastic way that fueled hatred for her and caused her to be a symbol of the French Nobles disregarding the poor. This goes to the second point: lavishing in riches the country never had. While it is true she was quite the spender loving the queen lifestyle, it is important to note she wasn't the only Noble who did this. Almost all the French Nobles were spending money at the expense of the poor (with the exception of Louis, who wof much rather spend his time tinkering away), she just happens to be the main face of it. It is also important to note that while she did spend a lot of cash, she was actually much kinder than the media was portraying her to be, and she was described as being extremely friendly to almost anyone who crossed her path

Pokemon Sun and Moon has some great emotional episodes that I don't think I'll be able to forget. Episodes like the Stoutland that helped mentor Ashs Litten dying of old age, Ash and friends spending time with a pokemon that has the lifespan of a fruitfly and having to deal with it slowly fading away, and One of Ashs friends regretting her last words to her mother only to finally be able to thank her mother. Sun and Moon has a lot of filler that can be a slog to get through but those specific episodes are what make me glad I stuck with it. Same thing with the "depression" part of Inside Out, the "mid-life crisis" part of The Incredibles, and the "letting go of the past" part of Toy Story 3 and its inferior sequel. Technically true though it may be that Pixar films aren't _just_ for kids, they are still for kids. "All ages" means "ALL ages", "the whole family" means "the WHOLE family", and nobody at Pixar has ever so much as implied otherwise. ...Except for Brad Bird, fuming the flames of the whole "OhHh It'S nOt a KiDs MoViE" thing, completely unironically, making a clown and a fool of himself in the process.

Agreed. Now I wouldn't show a kid an R-rated movie, but a lot of bad things happen in this world, and there are a lot of sh*tty people. And by infantizing children of all ages, not only are you not trusting them to process heavier themes and think critically (so they never might learn to), but you also shield them from something that might happen to them and when it happens for real (either still in childhood or as an adult) they won't have had the mental 'practice' to try and handle it. And that's why I have taken the initiative and am training myself to say 'I don't know, let's find out' and to admit when I'm wrong.

Let them understand this movie because the way it is presented makes it explicitly able for them to comprehend. They CAN pick up on things. They might not fully get it until it’s explained properly but they can still see concepts and relate to them. One thing I must ponder is why complex themes are often seen as inappropriate when a lot of things that are discussed in animated movies (with your example of people seeing killing the villain as inappropriate for children being a prime example of this) are things that they inevitably get taught in history class. If killing the villain in a movie is inappropriate, why is it appropriate to discuss the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand or the death of Caesar? Whether or not children are exposed to, for example, Batman killing the Joker, they are invariably going to see very real villains killed in history by the very education system that is propped up by those very same people. As such, it isn't exactly a well thought out point to say that certain themes are inappropriate for children when those very themes are being taught to them regardless of the media presence of those themes.

That part where you said that adults don't know how to handle nero-divergent kids, I have a lot of personal experience with that. My little sisters (both 6) get a lot of crap from my parents because they're always on they're phones or addicted to sugar despite the fact it's their own fault because they enabled them to become addicted to those things. My parents know how to take care of their kids but they flat out don't have the patience for it and refuse to go to therapy because they don't want to admit there's something wrong with them. I know my sisters aren't actually difficult because it takes little to no scolding from me for them to get the message. All I have to do is teach them why what they're doing is bad and be patient. I act as their parent so often that I've flat out called them my kids on some occasions, and treat them as such. My parents aren't like that though, especially my dad. And I clearly can't raise them on my own because I don't have the time and I'm 14! My parents' handling of my sisters is so bad that I'm genuinely worried for my sisters' futures. Not to mention the fact that I'm possibly autistic and have multiple mental disorders but they don't take into consideration that I dissociate often and I'm too depressed for school work and just say, "Well, you should do more". I'm sharing this to let you know that, well, you're absolutely right. A lot of adults are stupid and don't know how to take care of kids. Also as a word of warning: If you're a parent, be a parent. I distinctly remember when I was like 6 years old and was blown away at the concept of a gray villain in a episode of Power Rangers. I also remember talking to my peers about similar rather "morally complex" characters. Children do understand this stuff, just in a much simpler form. I work with preschool aged children and though their articulation is even more simplified than a 6/7 year old, they show signs of understanding "muh complex morality" in media. There's an excellent video of a therapist analyzing Inside Out, and he shares a wonderful anecdote of how his very young daughter said a memory of hers was "blue and yellow", akin to the memory in the movie.

Okay, I haven’t seen Soul but judging by what you said, I already love 22. I remember my school REALLY didn’t help me when I was diagnosed with autism and despite they thought I was a hard working student, whenever it came to my interests and hobbies they just didn’t give a shit. They hated it when I drew in my sketchbook in class, blamed my mother for being a bad parent because I was drawing gore at one point and they thought me drawing with a black pen meant I was depressed. YES REALLY. I made a PowerPoint presentation about why I love MLP as a way to talk about social outcasts and they threw it back in my face cos they thought it wasn’t educational. Even when I was making mascots for our school houses (granted they were all MLP ponies but they should’ve at least told me to rethink the designs to make it original) and they just threw it away. When I was being harassed by an ex classmate they just gave me a little kids Internet safety book when I was SEVEN-fucking-TEEN. And even when one of my own classmates called me the “class r****d” on FB, no teacher found out about this or say anything about it. (Tbf i should’ve said something but I was a coward back then but still they should’ve At least CHECKED THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA AND SEE WHAT THEIR STUDENTS ARE POSTING) To sum up, I was literally infantilised. I was treated like a precious babby who should just listen to what the adults say and not embrace my hobbies cos they’re not educational and as such grew into a very insecure, immature woman and I’m still now recovering from all the hell secondary school has put me in. So yeah 22 sounds like me when I was at secondary school and it’s depressing how this clear and obvious message to parents and teachers about how they should treat children is completely ignored cos I NEED VALIDATION TO WATCH A CHILDRENS FILM!!!!

I really, really, *really* hated the people saying that Inside Out was 'too complex' or 'too deep' for kids. I was in the exact same situation as the main character multiple times as a kid, and I knew damn well people didn't get it, as much as they pretended they did.

this video says alot of the things ive thought of pixar for a while. ive grown up with these movies and when i saw the incredibles, when I WAS 5, i saw and knew that helen thought bob was cheating on her. i saw the dark, disturbing revealation that syndrome had killed all the supers to make the perfect robot. it seemed liek brad bird directs his movies for adults then kids. but with Cars, it teaches kids to slow down and enjoy life while also giving them a fun race car movie. the point is, animation is an art form, and within that art you have genres: kids films, action, adventure and all the other genres. it can be meant for kids but animation is not a genre, its art form for brilliant directors like brad bird and john clements. so get your head out your ass for saying 'pIxAR Is NOt MeANt FoR KIIIIIDDSSS' like....stfu.

Soul's message about how the system is failing Twenty-Two completely flew over my family's head. They thought it was just "life is worth living not for a purpose but just for the sake of it" and they didn't think too hard on it. God, I wish I'd had this movie as a kid, it would have been so validating to see.

Pixar was my favorite studio growing up and it was because of one movie. Toy Story 2. The Arc Jessie goes through I could relate to very much as a child having been abandoned by my family at a young age. Inside out is also for kids as it's my kids favorite movie, and he uses the characters to show how he's feeling (nonverbal autistic ) This Video really touched me because I've been hearing how soul is not for kids but having seen it and 22's story I can't help but think how it is for kids and how kids who have been abused can relate to her. I know my 10-year-old self could. I mention this because I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. People who have been abused as kids even as adults ( my experience ) look for things that can relate to that to heal. For me, the music in these movies the characters, and these stories were a way for me to thrive in an environment I wouldn't have. While that is sad Without these influences I shudder to think where I would have ended up. These movies were a way for me to express my feelings in a safe way without further abuse and without appearing weak as a child. TLDR: People who say pixar is not for kids.... Please shut the fuck up. You don't know what you are talking about.

I once had to take care of a "problem" child, but the only problem the kid had was having terrible parents. Sadly people like these that say "Is not actually for kids" never going to change, because first they will need to accept they like kids stuff and this offends them deeply, because they like to think of themselves as superior and with high intellect, this is why when these sad sacks discovers that anime exist they almost cry on "Finally a cartoon not aimed at kids!" and think that liking anime is a personality trait and start to complain how western animation should be more mature and appeal to adults when their "adult" animes are immature and extremely tropey

I just finished my certification and my mentor teacher used Inside Out as entertainment for her students when she had "extra time" instead of actually talking about the movie and having the students internalize it and mature emotionally. The school system is way too concerned about children's academic abilities and not their life skills.

When I saw Inside Out, my first thought was "I wish this movie had come out 15 years ago" because I grew up in an area that actively didn't believe kids could be depressed unless they were abused in a way that adults acknowledged. Everything else was seen as 'attention-seeking' and therefore something to be punished, not helped. And Inside Out was out there calling them the fuck out on that while validating the hardships that kids go through and proving that they don't need their own super tragic backstories for things to get that way. Inside Out is 100000% a kids movie that adults need to learn from, not the other way around. I haven't seen Soul yet because I'm not sure I'm emotionally prepared for it, but it sounds like it's very much the same. Something that kids will absolutely relate to and that adults desperately need to actually learn from.

Why do people think a movie for kids means it can't also be for adult. You know who watches a lot of movies with kids? Their adult parents. Not saying that its not for kids. Totally for kids. And kids get it. Just saying that I an adult also love and get these movies.

Adults feel this deep desire to return to the validating feelings of their youth, provided by the studios they love. So when a movie comes along, of course they want to still be the targeted audience. They can't get with the fact that their not the ones meant to be reached, their the ones the message is being sent to. Instead of superimposing their own selfish interpretation of a deep and meaningful piece of art and ripping away the emotional depth, changing the symbolism and blatantly grabbing at the last shreds of their innocence they need to realize that they're the ones in the wrong and work up the courage to come to terms with kids' ever expanding sense of self, and the roles they play in helping them navigate life. Just stop grinning stupidly as Pixar repeatedly beats you over the head with this message with film after film because all it shows is that you need to fucking. stop.

Thank you for saying this! I am not neurodivergent but I felt SO MUCH with 22. I have a problem with stuff like school to the point where I had to redo maths for 3 years while also trying to do college at the same time and let me tell you my emotions got out of control, I was sad, stressed, angry and lonely due to the fact that I felt so stupid because all my friends passed these classes that I was having so much trouble with. So when I rewatched the movie and I picked up on that, I felt like I was about to cry. Joe talking to 22 and helping her figure herself out was so revealing to me that someone actually helped her! I was 22 in that scene! And now that I was able to pass my redo Maths I feel like a ginormous weight is off my shoulders! And people saying that kids can’t understand this film is really annoying, I’m glad people like you and Cell Spex were able to see that too

This video hit very close to home for me. I'm on the very high end of the Autism Spectrum, but I wasn't diagnosed until 8th Grade in Middle School, my sister who was 7 years younger than me was already diagnosed by that point. From first grade and up I struggled to learn and retain what was being taught, I struggled to make friends and was eventually labeled a "bad kid" or "trouble child" when I started acting out around 4th grade. Things were never worse than when I was in Middle School, I'm an agnostic in the bible belt, I was relentlessly bullied by my classmates for being an "Atheist" and for my being "sheltered" and not knowing what swearing was. No one in my whole school thought to do any tests until an incident where I attacked another student, a girl who'd been bullying me for a whole semester, I was going to be suspended or even expelled if it weren't for fellow classmates coming forth and finally admitting what had been going on. Only then did a teacher think to do a test on me. I am fortunate enough to have been in a School District that had a special needs program, that was able to finally give me an explanation of what was "wrong" with me (There's obviously nothing wrong with being Autistic but for a long time I did genuinely think something about me was wrong or broken). However, many more are not because the system doesn't require other neurodivergent kids like me to get what they need, it's so much easier just to give up on us. Thank you for making this video, Lily, people need to understand that just because something has mature themes doesn't mean it's not for kids. This movie is more than just a story about a guy's "Death" or mid-life crisis. Note: Any dumbass who's gonna tell a kid to get out of a theatre JUST because they said something is a fucking dumbass, holy shit I can never get used to the fact people like this ACTUALLY exist OH MY GOD.

It's just like Snyder cultists who clearly don't believe a sense of humour and light banter between characters is compatible with making a good superhero movie. I'd go so far as to say they stem from the same desire: to shore up insecurity about liking movies aimed at a younger audience by denying either their target audience or their quality even exist.

soul really resonated with me. i've struggled with adhd and bipolar disorder for seventeen years, and i was always labeled a "problem child" by my teachers and my parents. instead of trying to help me, i've just been treated like a lost cause. i felt the same way with inside out. it's been like this since elementary school. i'm tired of people acting like messages are too """matuuuuurrrrreeee""" for kids while acting like petulant babies the moment someone mentions they may be in the wrong when taking care of a child.
