Hi guys, I passed my driving test yesterday with 2 minor in my 4th attempt with my own car,no professional instructor, just a family member. I learnt a lot from this channel. Thanks so much.

Absolutely! Your first point is so spot on how you broke it down. Don't settle for half assed/lazy instructors! There are good instructors out there, the lady I had was so focused on getting me to drive properly and pass and I could tell she genuinely cared. I wouldn't have passed with a single minor without her positive attitude and phenomenal ability to teach (along with binging Driving School TV ofc). There are good instructors out there, don't settle for losers! Big up Francis have some money for being such a brilliant source of knowledge for new drivers!

Appreciate that millions 🙏 and congrats on passing with such a great score!! It's really good to hear you had a great instructor! Sometimes it's easy to hear all these stories and think there's more bad than good out there, but luckily I think bad instructors are in the minority and it's just because what they do is so shocking that it's all we hear about. Same with review sites though, i guess! You write a bad review to vent but if you have a good experience you're grateful but you just carry on and say nothing lol

As far as I'm aware, the Driving instructor is legally in control of the car during a lesson, and would face the same points/fine for hand-holding a phone as if they were driving. (posted this before watching the video, then realised it was covered)

I agree absolutely. 30 years ago i booked an intensive driving course ( paid upfront) and the instructor was useless ( i was too young to do anything about it). The day before my test he said i wasn't ready and couldn't use his car ( he was right) , he said i needed more lessons and i said" not with you " . And that was that for 30 years!! I stated driving lessons again last year , had a nice lady for 5 lessons but she gave up instructing, i got another guy and he was dreadful, he wouldn't let me drive , he was late, he was hypercritical and up himself. I dumped him after 3 lessons. I then got recommended another instructor who was lovely and i passed on my 4th test. I still don't really believe it after all this time, but its wonderful 😊

This is a great video. My first driving instructor was always on their phone and I wasn't happy with it as I was learning I wanted him to look and see areas where I could improve I ditched that guy after 4 lessons got another one which is easier said then done With new one I was happy with way I was progressing and only ever used his phone once, reason being he asked me to pull over as it was someone kept ringing him made him think it was an emergency call so I pulled up and he added the time on top of my lesson which I lost. He got me to pass first my test first try, that was 3 years ago

I am from Cyprus and i have to say that I'm almost certain i had the worst driving instructor in the entire country. He would leave me in the car for as long as 30 mins and go to the supermarket, the cafe or even his house. Sometimes when he was away he would make me practice 3 point turns completely on my own. I remember once there was no parking spaces in the supermarket car park so he made me stop behind another car and before leaving he told me to move the car if it's blocking anyone. Constantly on his phone either scrolling or talking, he was even watching eurovision once. Late for all lessons every single time. On my very first lesson he was so much behind his schedule that he made me get on the motorway to save time. Another time the student before me had somewhere to be and because he delayed her so much, he got behind the wheel during my lesson time and performed the most dangerous driving I've ever seen (100 in a 30kmh zone for example). Pretty sure I don't need to explain his teaching style, i think it's obvious at this point. I still don't know why i stuck to him until my test, at least i passed and never needed his help again. If anyone has a story of a worse instructor i would be very interested to hear it, but i doubt there is.

She would go I want 20 out of 10 and make it fun. We did have a game let's see how tight of space you can reverse into. The first time couldn't get into it. So went elsewhere. Then come back but still not but was getting closer. I did like my instructor mostly, but he did now and again read and reply to texts and nip into Morrisons for a drink on lessons. Also fueled up during lesson more than a few times. As a very nervous learner, at the time I welcome the release from the pressure, but in hindsight he was doing all this on my time I'd paid for. I have no other complaints, thorough, patient instructor, passed my test with him after wasting a fortune on an intensive driving course prior. Also heard that if they do get out of the car, they need to make sure you get out also and take the key from you. As otherwise you have an unqualified driver technically in charge of the vehicle. I had a woeful instructor back in about 2009, I genuinely thought I'd never get behind the wheel again. Didn't do so for 10 years. He was so angry, ranting, raving, it obviously frustrated him massively when you couldn't do something. And he would make you stop in the middle of the road on a main road, with people queuing and beeping behind you, to grill you about mistakes. Of course you're not listening, you're hyper aware of everyone getting furious stuck behind you. I was young and timid. As I am now, he would get reported to the DVSA 100%. Based on his age then, I massively doubt he's still working. But just in case he looked older than he was, do not go with a bald instructor called Jeff working for Bill Plant in the Wakefield, West Yorkshire vicinity

Didn't have to worry about phones when I learned . A good instructor keeps you calm even when everything is falling to bits . They stop you being your own worst enemy give you the confidence you need with a little push but don't shout and teach all the aspects of driving and make you feel safe so you can progress. They also let you make mistakes in a safe way so you can learn they also have you try to work things out a little bit . It's not just do as I say

Like you, I hear stories of this all the time. There is a multi car driving school near me and many of their instructors are constantly using their phones. You can see them approaching you and they are looking down into their laps. Another instructor near me doubles up, starting a lesson by letting the previous pupil drive to the next pupils house then the second pupil drops the first one off. I double up with one set of pupils as I’m teaching a young couple who live together so one of them does an hour, then they swop over. They both benefit from watching each other drive, but I wouldn’t dream of doing it with pupils from different households. Had one instructor recently finish and some of their pupils came to me. They were getting in the car, doing cockpit drill then just going. No lessons recap, plans or aims and objectives being set. Literally, just going. They said they used to just “ drive about “ hadn’t a clue about different traffic lights, roundabouts etc. Instructor constantly on the phone via the Bluetooth to their Partner. The pupils could hear the conversations. Two pupils had taken their tests and hadn’t even practised Sat Nav or Signs - hadn’t got a clue about it until the examiner asked them to do it. I’d have not believed this off a pupil but, when you have 2 people who don’t even know each other saying the same thing….

Just disgraceful. I'm shocked at some of the comments I am reading. The problem (where I live anyway) is, that driving instructors are in such short supply and have waiting lists as long as your aunt Mary's knitting ball. I've been very fortunate that I have had two very good driving instructors (first one was manual but then I switched to automatic). You are paying these people a lot of money to help you get your driving test. If they can't give you the courtesy and respect you deserve, ditch them - and report them if it is something blatantly bad.

Everything with learning to drive at the min seems a big ordeal from getting lessons all the way to doing the tests you need to do. People spend a lot of time and money on learning to drive ..it's not pocket change so the industry should be so much better.

I’ve had some red flags with previous instructors. One wasn’t teaching me anything and even swore after I messed up the same roundabout 3x. They pulled over went to the toilet straight after and didn’t even apologise or give the time back. They knocked my confidence at the time. On the first lesson the instructor jokingly said please don’t kill me. But I got the impression they didn’t really enjoy their job I know they wasn’t actually pulling up my mistakes. The instructor said I would be ready for a test in 6 months time. We were practicing in a different area and then dropped me in it right before the test. Definitely if something doesn’t feel right it definitely isn’t right. I’ve passed now. But always make sure the instructor is thorough and does several manoeuvres with you during each lesson and is actually giving instruction and teaching both on the roads and during manoeuvres. If they aren’t doing those things they most likely don’t have passion for being an instructor.

My driving instructor was on her phone once whilst I was busy driving. I approached a stationary car on the side of the road where the driver just swung his door open and jumped out without checking that I was almost by him, but luckily, I swerved out safely. He started fighting with another guy in the road. My swerving made the driving instructor get off of her phone. However, instead of checking why I swerved, she grabbed the wheel to pull me to the left. She soon realized what happened, and instead of focusing on me, she held the wheel pulling me further to the left whilst watching the fight behind us in the rear view mirror. I was so mad. She also used to have me stop the car and stand for more than a minute at stop streets to talk to drivers she knows and used to teach in the area 😅

My first instructor was hideous. He would cut lessons short, be late or just not turn up. He'd do his shopping on my time, encourage me to speed and stress me out. He'd pressure me for money all the time. The worst part by far was the fact he knew my brother was murdered in a road rage attack and I have terrible trauma over it and I gave up driving for 25 years because of it but he'd shout and rant at me. He'd also get me to do petty things like drive at 2mph if I got beeped at, encouraging sh1te driving. Actually causing the one thing I didn't want - road rage! Normally I'd deck someone for this disrespect but I'd feel in danger with this angry man, alone in his car with him. I 100% grassed him to his boss but he's still an ADI! I didn't report him as he knows where I live. I went with a different instructor and passed first time with 2 driving faults and I'm much more confident 🎉

Have you gone back to them? Maybe they were in disbelief coz they were dead set on you passing. But if you're getting weird vibes find someone else

Honestly, us learners are getting a raw deal. Where are all the driving instructors with integrity 😢 I've had terrible instructors, the first was someone who'd direct me to her house while she popped in to check on her dog. My 2nd instructor was always late, and in a hurry to leave... he still owes me a refund for an hours lesson...ill never pay in advance again. Then I had a dodgy guy who was on his phone, and often IMO inappropriate with his choice of conversation... I've ditched him since. I'm now with another instructor and feeling much more positive, I'm hoping this will be the last one until I pass 😩

I'm Autistic, now I know my Grandson would tell you I'm 100, not quite! It wasn't widely understood when I was a teenager, I was classed as backward. My first Driving Instructor was lovely, She was so kind and patient, but She was pregnant and had to stop. Her Father in Law took over as my Instructor and he was a monster. He used to smoke in the car which my made eyes sting, the language was off the scale, his temper was up there with it. He said I was too stupid to drive, and called me other names then he hit on the head with an RAC Handbook. I had to tell my Mother and She was all for going to the Police. So they got me in with another one, he used to fall asleep and then do his nut shouting when I mounted the kerb or stalled. Then I struck gold with Keith and he got me through it and through the test and on the road.
