The music that some of us younger boomers grew up listening to taught us more than just how to rock, groove & roll. There were life lessons in so many of the songs, singing about love & brotherhood, not hate & division.

It doesn't matter. Any of us that are over 60, we watched our fathers come home from Korea. We watch Rock and Roll arrive, we saw President Kennedy assassination, seen Martin Luther King change the world and his assassination. We saw Vietnam and the treatment of our troops when they returned and that was all before we turned 20. So I think most of us feel the same way but other people these days my my my. Johnny Turner your correct, I’m 74 and caught just a bit more than you but on a visceral level, I’m broken hearted that those miles stones we fought for have been wiped out by an uncaring president who hasn’t suffered like we did for these rights. Music brought us all together back in the day. Our music was poetic, prophesied and filled with hope. Praying for our nation. Just keep music coming, peace out brother ,

A little period context here... this was released in the early 70's so when he says "Brothers you know what I mean...", the term 'brother' was commonly used to address all males, not a specific race or color thing then. It was a term from the hippie movement which basically claimed we are all brothers, I still have a few friends who use 'brother' in that context.

This song came out during my teen years and I loved it. Only recently did I discover this is a cover of a song by a band called Hot Chocolate. Their version is well worth checking out. It tells the story from both sides and in greater detail. It makes more sense when it concludes "ain't no difference if you're black or white". And you'll understand why their version couldn't have played on American 70's radio. It had to be sanitized.

I enjoy the hell out of your reactions to the music I grew up with. The 70’s was a time where everything seemed like it was finally getting to a point where most tensions were being put to rest. This song brings back a ton of great memories, I grew up in a melting pot area due to my Dad being in the Navy he was a WWII vet and stayed in service for over 30 years. As he once said “there’s no color when you’re fighting for the same things, the man next to you is your brother”. When you paused at “makes no difference if you’re black or white” I said “that’s it, you got that right”. I can’t believe how we’ve gone backwards after all we had fixed. I wish more people would wake up. Love your channel and always look forward to your reactions. Stay healthy and safe. Oh you gotta check out Grand Funk Railroads “Black Licorice” now that’s a smack dab lol.

Another controversial song like this, released in 1966, was Society's Child by Janis Ian. Way ahead of the times and written by a 14 year old girl. So mature for her age. I was in awe at the time and the song still holds up. Please react to this one Jamel. I think you'll like it. Thanks!! P.S. This song was originally written by a black group called Hot Chocolate.in The U K...Stories covered it..and it was a big hit in America..I had the pleasure of singing with Ian Lloyd the Stories singer on the Glass Moon song. On a Carousel..he was great..we all sang backup..it sounded amazing ..and great fun. Thanks Ian..you are the best

I recall hearing this song on the FM radio in my car back in 1973 while driving either to or back from college. This may be the first time that I actually heard the song from beginning to end. Jamal, thanks for reacting to this tune. Take care my brother.

What a great song. He sounds like a higher pitched version of Rod Stewart. Speaking of Rod, try "Maggie May" or "Every Picture Tells a Story" by him.

@DAVE ADAM Rod Stewart was well known in '67 with Jeff Beck. He also hit it in '71 with The Faces. Maggie May, and You Wear It Well, both preceded this tune.

I am VERY VERY VERY VERY glad you reacted to this tune. It was released when I was in 3rd grade. I loved it ever since. The string instruments remind me of ELO. Yes, I suggested this tune a while back. I wholeheartedly agree with the message of the song: it does not matter if you are black or white. Very accurate and simple. Maybe I am stupid, but I never saw the sense in judging someone or treating them different based only on skin color. Makes no sense. This tune also reminds me of the TV series “SOAP”. SOAP was canceled because it was too controversial at the time. Part of that controversy, was a white man, Danny, living with a black woman, Polly. A suggestion for a tune to react to: “Something in the Air” by Thunderclap Newman. Trust me on this. Btw... Pete Townsend of The Who was involved with that.
