In 1783 a corn porter accidentally offended a cartman and set in motion a chain of events that would save boxing. This is the story of Thomas Jackling.

Even though I've read accounts of this fight many times, you still manage you make it engaging. Well done.

Rip to a great man who saved the sport even tho he didnt initially want to box or knew he could but in the end did the most he could've ever done to help boxing #fightteam

The "drinking and gambling to death" ending seems to be a popular one for pugilists of old. Was there a reason for this?

Very common for them to be gifted pubs as a reward by their supporters when they retired. The same happened to wrestlers and war heroes as well often with similar results.

He had a very active job before he took up pugilism and when he stopped perhaps he didn't take up an activity to replace it. I imagine he missed physical activity and the drinking and gambling was to fill the void. The void left from not maintaining his art, or at least some other form of stomatic practise.

Another great video Oz, but that's a given. Fascinating to see the story of Johnson, I was unaware of how influential he was in boxing's revival. Also liked seeing your cover Isaac Perrins, who was definitely one of the more fascinating figures of the Broughton era. I heard he had the reputation as England's strongest man during that period, with incredible strength feats like lifting a 780lb block of iron onto a wagon, and being able to deadlift over 900lbs on a rigid bar. Not sure how accurate this is, but fascinating nonetheless! Keep up the great work! I'd love to see a video on Bendigo Thompson or the LPR era eventually!

Perrins definitely deserves his own video at some stage, he's fascinating!

Love these boxing history videos, so what's your opinion of the modern bare knuckle scene? for me it took me a long time to get into it, but what sold it was they were stopping fights more frequently for cuts-which they don't do so much in gloved boxing even though they can, so guys weren't taking round after round of punishment.
@EnglishMartialArts9 ай бұрын
I enjoy it from a personal perspective, but from a historical one I find it a little disappointing.
@StevieB83639 ай бұрын
@@EnglishMartialArts Are you disappointed because it doesn't include grappling?

@StevieB8363 no, just that it still feels like modern post queensberry boxing...

@@EnglishMartialArts I think we've just stumbled on a video idea by accident, trouble at the moment is that a lot of current bkb come from gloved boxing and that's how they train. I do like however how bkfc have the smaller round ring and they have the line to make fighter's "toe the line" at the start of rounds.
@StevieB83639 ай бұрын
@@EnglishMartialArts I submit that's because of the rules. Unless they are allowed to grapple/throw, how can it be much different? But I do enjoy it. It's interesting to see how even a relatively light punch can score a knockdown when it hits with a bare fist.

do you still sell your Stories of Greatness t-shirt or do you just have the Fight Team one?
@EnglishMartialArts9 ай бұрын
I've switched from spreadshirt to teespring and haven't yet ported that design across. In theory you can still get it from spreadhsirt, but teespring has a better reputation for quality hence the move.
