“Properly equipped”: no boots/trail crampons, shoveling with traction boards, using traction boards in snow, M/T tires (which are only marginally better than All Seasons for anything other than deep, sticky mud…) Months you should be prepared for snow in the mountains: January-December. One of my favorite ways to escape the July heat in Denver is to drive an hour and have a snowball fight.

Great work and patients. 8:38 is a good example of one circumstance that IFS is better then Solid Front Axles. You can see the trenches from both of the diff pumpkins dug in the crust of the snow. The high ground clearance of IFS and the ability to skid plate from the front bumper to back axle allows for an easier slide on the snow.

These are great episodes. Not only because of the beautiful scenery, but more so because of the adversity you are overcoming. It makes for a much more compelling story than your usual trips. How you are dealing with the challenges and what you are learning is of great benefit for the rest of us. When I was in college in Utah in the late 1960’s, I had a roommate who would borrow his grandfather’s old Wileys Jeep and we would take it up in the mountains. Sometimes we would drive until we got stuck in mud or snow and then had to figure out how to get out of the jam we had gotten ourselves into. Sometimes we were able to help others who needed help. Great memories. I look forward to your family taking on more challenging adventures, where experiencing the unexpected makes for amazing stories.

Incredible feat of perseverance and persistence! - Fortunately you had a great team, tech, gear and 2 vehicles to make it all possible. Awesome job guys!
@VideosOffRoad4 жыл бұрын
While there are snow conditions in which no 4x4 vehicle will have an easy time, your Jeeps will float on top of the snow a LOT better when they're not many hundreds of pounds overweight with roof rack, rooftop tent, awning, fridge, hinge steps, etc. Weight is absolutely the enemy of every off roader under most conditions. I used to carry much of that stuff (but no RTT) in my JKUR and have since abandoned it for much lighter, if less convenient, camping gear. Things have gotten very noticeably better being much more nimble. It's a balancing act, for sure. Love your videos, please keep them coming.
@EFRT4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you’re right it’s always a balancing act of having the proper gear for long-haul extended overland travel and having the right weight for off-road situations. Glad you are enjoying the videos. Hope you have a wonderful Sunday!

I have lived an wheeled around Mt. Shasta for 20 years. The one thing I learned about snow is that when it reaches a certain consistency you done. When night hits and the snow freezes again you can usually cruise on top real well. In addition running tire pressure as low as possible increases you foot print traction tremendously. In sand and snow that is the key. Except slushy snow. Game over unless you have a lot of extra fuel to burn.
@EFRT4 жыл бұрын
You’re right. The snow was super slushy during the day but we tried to leave early in the morning when it was frozen and it really helped a lot. We eventually lowered our tire pressure to about 8 psi and that helped as well. Thanks for watching and have a wonderful day! P.S.we love the Mount Shasta area!

This video makes me feel better about what I did just this past Friday. It took me 2 hours to go about 500 yards through similar conditions. I winched about 8 times before I finally reached a spot I could winch around 180 degrees. Took me less than 5 minutes to go back the 500 yards. It sure does work better when there are ruts to go in.

Ours was at 10PM. I couldn’t see to go far in reverse. We were out of cell range, ironically, my GMRS license came through the following day. Your video even made me have smell memory of that night - burning transmission and tires. I went from half a tank to running on fumes. I was simply trying to take my daughter on a fun shortcut. Live and learn. We made it home by 1:30 AM.
