The left and right trapezius viewed as a whole create a trapezium in shape, thus giving this muscle its name.
As the trapezius is an important neck muscle, any spastic activity in the sternocleidomastoid, suboccipitals, scalenes, longus colli, levator scapulae, or many other muscles will have an effect on its status.
Many people hold emotional tension in the upper trapezius.
The upper portion decelerates the head, the middle portion decelerates protraction, and the lower portion decelerates shoulder elevation.
Myofascial trigger points here lead to tension headaches, with sharp pain felt in the temporal bone and into the masseter, behind the eye and ear (on the same side), and along the side of the neck.
Occasionally, pain will travel to the back of the head, and a burning pain will be experienced down into the vertebral side of the scapula and middle back.
Trapezius myofascial trigger points can cause loss of balance and dizziness.
Myofascial trigger points in this muscle are often mistaken for disc pathologies, neuralgia, spinal stenosis, shoulder bursitis, or arthritis.

Whats the difference between this and bending forward and letting the arms hang?
@Nielasher
@Nielasher 3 ай бұрын
Bending forward and letting your arms hang primarily stretches your lower back and relieves tension in the spine. The exercise we demonstrate targets the trapezius muscles specifically, helping to release tightness across the shoulders and upper back. Both are beneficial but focus on different areas of the body for relief and muscle elongation. 💪

There are additional stretches you can perform for the Traps. Keep in mind that it takes time to learn how to execute this stretch efficiently. Once you do grasp it, the stretch will need to be performed often and consistently in order to see its effects on the body.

Safe move for healthy seniors?
@Nielasher
@Nielasher 5 ай бұрын
Stretching the trapezius is generally safe for healthy seniors, provided it's done gently and within comfort limits. It's always a good idea to start slowly, listen to your body, and avoid any movements that cause pain. 🙌

I dumbell row heavy. Throught the day at work the middle trapeziois on 1 side clenches tight. So much for retracting shoulders for posture. I will do this stretch alot to eleases that knot. A tennis ball between the wall and the back is good to roll out the tight knot but.... I lost my ball :(

Try to expand your back and shoulder blades. Think of separating your shoulder blades from each other and push your shoulders away from your ears before your stretch your arms forward :)

It’s important to be gentle and listen to your body. Try reducing the stretch intensity and see if that helps. If the pain persists, consider consulting a professional. Take care! 😊
