Loving this series! The 280 was my favorite car as a teen. I finally got to buy one years later, an 83 280ZX that was super fun and had no frame rails pretty much. It came with what can jokingly be described as Nissan's factory installed rust. A fun screamer of a car for $600 bucks though. It got hit in an intersection and was replaced with a Nissan Pulsar NX which was also a very fun, albeit slow, car. Did finally get another Z later for a brief period, a 76 280, but ended up selling it because I had nowhere good to store it and was afraid it would end up rusting. You are basically doing here what I always wanted to do with the 280ZX. Just redo the whole thing. Cool to watch someone actually doing this!

When I saw that open book, I knew right away it was the 'How to restore your Datsun Z' as I myself ordered this exact book awhile back for this purpose someday. And hey, its great and refreshing to hear some different calming music instead of the usuall rut that is on most videos. Also, you're going to run into a lot more stuck an/or broken bolts, but fortunately many of this hardware is still available from Nissan. You could also look for some stainless steel nuts and bolts and screws in the same metric sizes for when you start putting it all back together. Again, this is great stuff. Keep it up!
@RestorationForBeginners5 жыл бұрын
For sure, thank you. I will say though, the book does seem pretty detailed when you're just reading through it, but it doesn't cover even half of everything you'll encounter. It's definitely helpful, but I found that it can only prepare you so much.

@@RestorationForBeginners For sure man. I'm sure it will help, but you'll be involved in a lot more unseen work. My goal is to rebuild a 280zx turbo as a 'mild' custom'. My way. I've got all these crazy ideas in my head and on paper. Its the dream anyway. So, I see you're in Raleigh. I'm down in Fayetteville. Got a restored 76 280z and a daily driver 280zx. Currently out of the country, but next time I'm in town, I'd enjoy stopping by sometime if that'd be alright with you.

The book definitely helps, but it's a bit slim on the details and the black and white pictures are severely lacking. You can only learn so much without getting your hands dirty. Luckily you have me fumbling through this all first and showing every step of the way!

Just bought another 280Z this past week and for the first time I want to do a total tear down like you are doing. I will definitely watch all the videos as they seem like they will be very helpful. Can you tell me what book that was that you showed in this video? It looks like it will come in handy. I’m in NC also, just outside of Winston-Salem.

How to restore your Datsun Z Car: amzn.to/3pJjaKN I read this book from cover to cover, and it is about as helpful as a book can be on this topic. However, let me just say this... it's like learning how to drive a stick shift by reading about it, nothing really prepares you for what you're about to undertake. But best of luck, I think you'll enjoy the process, just have realistic expectations =) Keep in touch, let me know if there's anything else I can answer or help with. If you ever want to come by my garage and hang out, that's cool too. I'm in Cary/Morrisville near Raleigh.

@@RestorationForBeginners thanks for getting back to me so quick. I’m on video 7 right now and I couldn’t applaud your work ethic enough. I am very aware of the time, money and effort that goes into what your doing. I have done partial tear downs on all but one of my Z cars so I have an idea what I’m in store for (yikes). I will keep you updated on my progress and would love to come hang out someday. By the way love the music.

I enjoyed the music. My advice would be to have the tank cleaned and lined. Its bound to have some rust in there and it will eventually become a liability. What’ your bumper plan? Now is the time to remove them with the tank out. Are you going back the the gov’t regulated bumpers....I hope not. I think you said it before, the designers of this beautiful car never envisioned these ugly bumpers and quite frankly they’re not going to save you in a real accident anyway.
@RestorationForBeginners5 жыл бұрын
Yup they're not going back. They're heavy and useless. They are in decent shape so I'd be willing to give them away to someone who wants to do more of a faithful restoration (for a case of beer maybe). And the tank will get a restoration as well for sure, inside and out.
