Good afternoon my fellow plasterer John Field in North Carolina, thank you. We both realize learning to stucco can take one to five years, material knowledge takes up to 15 years with the attitude that if it's not right, we have to go back, but for free the next time and do it again. No such thing as any plasterer not making mistakes in over 30 years in the plastering trade, that is how we retain this info. Cheers, my friend.

As a guy that has to sling many different trowels in the remodeling business, I'm still in the learning curve on stucco/plastering products. Is your choice of "WeldCrete" preferred? or just convenient? I love love love watching your videos. I have a question I'm hoping you can answer...even though I've watch so many of your videos, my memory isn't the greatest. I have an approximately 100 year old house. The dormers are stucco. The front dormer has a pattern to it I don't think I've seen anywhere else...the back dormer(assuming since it's in the back and seen less) has what looks like the stucco was thrown on with a brush. How can i tell if the stucco has been painted? or if it is just a colored stucco? I have lived in the house for almost 60 years(it was my parents and then I bought it)...so I know it was nothing was applied in that 60 year period...but how do I tell what it was in the first 40 years? It needs a little sprucing up. thanks, if you get a chance to answer
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Howdy Kim, wet the stucco if it darkens, it wa applied with a color coat maintenance free finish. These absorb water. That means like a brick they darken but when dryer conditions return they turn back into their original color, thus maintenance free. If the color remains the same it was painted and the water will not absorb but instead it will shed off of it.👨🏻‍🔬

@@StuccoPlastering Wow! Thanks so much for replying...and so quickly. If it was painted, is the next step just applying a certain paint or do I need a bonding agent? Also, if it is not painted, can I use a precolored mortar/stucco mix? I really appreciate your responding. You are a star for sure.

@@StuccoPlastering Kirk, thanks for replying. I have a stucco pattern on our 1923 brick house with stucco dormers, that I have not seen anywhere else. I don't deal a whole lot with stucco but was wondering if there would be any way to post or send a picture of it to you to see if you could identify it(since that's your specialty)? It's very different...it has a smooth surface that stands out from a background that is rough...very different.

Is an angle grinder ever appropriate? I ask because I have a stucco project where my house has been scratched and browned and one wall is wavy around the vents. the stucco is about 1/4" over the weep screed in some places. there is talk of wetting the stucco and using a grinder. Thanks for the years of the videos. I've been a subscriber for years and respect and admire the mastery of your plastering skills.

Hello Jaoquin, grinding or sand blasting stucco releases silica dust in the air, which is as bad as inhaling asbestos, so no grinding. You can skim coat the area to make it appear better but the proper prep work is necessary.

Hi Kirk you are doing the best stucco job, I need your advice about doing stucco on new construction in Rochester MN, which is very cold in the winter time. My question is using foam and a premixed stucco which is crack resistant or using old school cement stucco ? Which is best to using on new construction? Thanks and I am John
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 10 жыл бұрын
HI John, My opinion after more than 30 years and doing both extensively is go with the styrofoam, yea, it's no where near as strong but it add very little weight, I have done the real thing with solid stucco styrofoam mold details of all shapes and sizes, and come to the conclusion that the added weight tends to apply so much pressure that over a period of more than 10 years that is usually cracks the stucco walls a lot. (Yes, I'm an old dude) so for me as I can do both I chose styrofoam for my stucco home. (less expensive, faster and longer lasting with no ill effects) Best wishes with whatever method you choose. You can also go on google and spend 50 hours reading the pro and cons forever. Best wishes, Kirk & Jason Giordano's DIY plastering network

I'm wondering why you did not go wider on the periphery to smooth out the angle so the blend is less noticeable, or even do the whole side wall? Just the price of the stucco? It doesn't look it it would be that much labor or time ... but then I've never done it myself! ;-) Thanks for the informative videos.

We are going to add onto our ranch style house on 2 sides and have a simple sanded stucco finish. The house currently has a fairly new Spanish style stucco finish on a ranch house (?)...done by the previous owner. For the other 2 sides of the house, that we aren't touching in the addition - do you suggest matching the Spanish style stucco, or can I go over it, or do I have to tear it all out if I don't like it? I don't want the house to have 2 sides one texture, and 2 sides another. I'm just not sure what the cost would be...and if it's worth it? Should I suck it up, and keep the Spanish style? Or am I in for a lot of trouble and cost? Any suggestions would be appreciated. By the way, do you come to the other side of the Bay?

Hi Linda and Doug, about five year ago I was doing repair work on a house that had three different finishes on 3 different walls. When i finished I told the folks I did all patch work to match the existing finishes, they were surprised and had no idea of what I was referring to, I showed them three completely different finish on different walls. They laughed and said in ten years they have never noticed such an obvious difference. For you guys that do care, do the finish you prefer, leave the existing finish on the walls you dislike, apply a bonding agent after pressure washing then apply a new finish coat. When I saw you teeter tottering the trowel on the vertical hump, I thought I was going to see a lesson on stucco grinding. Aside from grinding being a dusty nightmare, what would have been wrong with grinding the perimeter first?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 10 жыл бұрын
Morning RangerCaptain11A, being a dusty nightmare is half the problem, what if there is lead in the paint? For me a licenced plastering contractor, I won't risk lead in the paint for the one hundred dollars I made for the repair. The fine for releasing this lead into the air is $36,000 dollars. This fact alone is why I prefer to feather in, plus if you know how to plaster the way I show here is 3 times as effective and much faster. Mr Kirk, Yals videos are awesome. Ive watched like a hundred of them. I am new to stucco as I wasnt around it much back home but here in Florida its all over the place. It will be my choice going forward. So some super genius, i wont say any names, me, elected to fix a bunch of normal stair cracks on my one story 2005, 2200 squares, block/stucco house with lowes stucco patch which cracked again the next day on a couple cracks. Then I grinded/rotary tooled that out and used elastopatch from the caulk gun to fill the crack and and to add some texture to the crack and about 6 inches on each side of the crack because the area was very smooth from grinding out the white stucco patch material. Some of them look bad and they are about 4 feet from top to bottom in a step/stair pattern and the affected area is about 6 inches on either side of the crack. Id like to do better. Am I going to have to hammer drill out the area round each crack where i applied the stucco patch and elastopatch and restucco and texture the area with actual stucco or is there a way to grind off the area around the cracks down to the original stucco in and around the crack and just retexture the area with a texture coat? Then do a better job with the elastopatch should a crack reappear. The videos that i could find on your channel involved hammer drilling out the area and starting over or just texturing over a current stucco texture. Man i would really appreciate any tips. - JP

There are many things people can do but do not do because of fear. There are people who mistakenly think they can do things they ought not. I just thought your remark on the bucket was poignant. I have a bucket list i need to knock down before i can no longer say "i can." Btw, good sons and lovely wife you are blessed with. Hope the weather is balmy and your endeavors prosperous.

Almost every home in my area, has a stucco over concrete block design, mostly on exposed foundation walls. In my opinion the don't look anything at all like the stackstone they are supposed to look like. What is the best way "remove" the stucco so I can Install something else?....Thanks

Morning David Norris, best way is to skim it which requires proper prep work. I like that approach - you make it sound easy - must be those 30+ years of experience!! Kirk, I've been admiring your various videos on stucco repair and we've got an issue at our home we'd like to get your advice on if we could. We just had our home repainted and the process included stucco repair from both cracks and for previously repaired areas where access ports had been created to replumb our home. Those areas were not blended very well into the original stucco and the recent stuccoman tried to blend the existing repair into the original stucco to better match and become invisible. Now the texture of those newly repaired (and painted) areas do not match the original stucco texture (there are "peaks" that aren't as "knocked down" as the original texture). Our contractor is now suggesting they can scrape down the peaks and it should better blend in. Can you suggest the best method to have them re-repaired at this point? Is "knocking down"/sanding/scraping the "peaks" sufficient or should the whole area be taken down and restucco'ed to ensure the repair lasts? We're really looking forward to your thoughts - wish we had found your videos earlier!! Thanks! Richard Bush

Evening Richard, your stucco man is correct. Often I too will have to scrap the highspots as new dash finishes tend to be sharp, to blend in with the original, scraping the stucco with a trowel perhaps for five mints to get the high tips off works brilliantly if one knows what he is doing.🤓 Bringing peace, love, and brotherhood back to the world of, “Cement Plastering.” 💃 With over 800 educational and free KZbin videos, by your favorite plaster geek, “me🤓” and my son, “Jason,” the bearded plasterer.🌍

We have a home in Mexico with green board on outside that has a very thin coat of something like plaster? Not sure, but it has been chipping off in small, medium, and large chunks, revealing the green board underneath. How can I repair this, and with what materials? Thanks!

Howdy Skate Dude, I would suggest that you first chip out the weak or failing arears, add the moister barrior as best you can, then wire and lastly mix your cement plaster and apply while trying to match the existing finish as close as possble. hi Kirk. I'm from the UK. I have a question please. we have quite a rough finish (but excellent condition - 10 year old) house exterior walls. we're hoping to paint the exterior a more modern colour but everything looks dreadful because of the rough render finish. would it be possible to render over our very rough stippled render? many thanks.

That creates a lot of dust containing silica and lye, it's as bad if not worse than inhaling asbestos. The dust then lingers for weeks and settles on the ground and many of the neighbors yards, where when you walk on it, it is released once more into the air ready to be inhaled again by greedy lungs. Not good.
