@MrLikeke5 жыл бұрын
The 23T is a drop in the bucket compared to the ~400T in unfunded liabilities. This is all the debt in the USA, from retirement pensions to home mortgages. B-b-but someone's home mortgage should not be counted. Well, it's the taxpayers who fund the programs (FHA, Fannie, Freddie) and it's the tax payers who bail out toxic debts, so yes, mortgages should be counted. And the price tag on unfunded liabilities is rising every year.
@ThatBoldStatement5 жыл бұрын
@dark meat Government bonds. To raise money countries will issue government bonds which are essentially a guarantee to repay the money and also a bit of interest over a fixed period. These bonds are ussually at a much lower interest rate than most rates such as those you can get at a bank. The rate depends on the financial stability of the government as well. One issue with this method is if a government is too in debt, their currency might struggle a bit. This is because credit agencies might rate them lower. It also creates potential for additional taxation. Worries about more currency printing among other issues. Many countries in the EU took advantage of being part of the EU and using a common currency. Such as Greece. They had one of the lowest retirement ages in the world and countless social programs. This led it an ever increasing debt which didn't affect the currency as they were using the Euro propped up by countries like Germany. Ultimately this went back to bite them in the ass since they can't print more euros as it's a common currency. They essentially couldn't pay their debts which were largely owned by foreign governments trying to help support them. In the case of the US most of these government bonds are held by US citizens. They have an interest rate of around 1.6% which is even lower than inflation sometimes. When governments get too far into debt they will often use a method called "quantitative easing" which is where they start buying some of the government bonds back. This often is done through the printing of more currency. On a small scale this isn't too bad. But on a large scale it can ruin a currency as it becomes less valuable. Look at Venezuela, Zimbabwe (100 trillion Zimbabwean dollar bills for example). One day you could have $10000 in a bank account which is all your savings that could buy say 5000 loafs of bread. Then next year the government could have hyperinflation like Venezuela and your $10000 can only buy 1/10 of a loaf of bread. All your savings are destroyed. Since 2016 Venezuela inflation has been 5.3 million percent. Meaning 5.3 million dollars back then would be worth about what $1 back then was worth. So most people there try to use foreign currencies as in a single day your job earnings could become worth 10% what they were at the start of the day if you hold Venezuela currency. Some countries also use government bond investments to manipulate things. In the US case China owns over a trillion dollars of US government bonds. This isn't to be nice or show their support of the US. The reason China does this is that their economy is heavily reliant on foreign trading. Esspecially with the US. If an currency is more in demand in regards to worldwide currency it will have a higher trading value. If it is lower it will have a loert trading value. You might wonder why not have a higher one? This is bad for countries relying on exports a lot. If the USD is worth 7 Chinese currency today and it was worth 9 currency later this means the US currency can buy 28% more Chinese goods for the same amount of US currency. So it makes Chinese goods more appealing to buy. So by buying foreign debt the chinese government can help control their currency to sell stuff to other countries easier. It also helps defend their currency internationally from inflation. If China was angry could they get rid of it all to screw the US? Yes and no. They could get another countries government bonds to try to stabilize their economy. But the rapid selling would cause an effect and they'd lose money on their bonds immediately until the market adjusted. Other citizens would buy these debts. Chinese currency would be more pricy to America for a bit and would lead to them selling less internationally and hurt their people. It could lead to government bond rates increasing slightly on later issues. It would cause some effect to the US but not something crazy. If they took all the money back to China it would hurt their currency even worse as they wouldn't have as much ability to buy and sell debt to control currency rates. This is only scratching the surface of all of these things. But ive already written enough.

JAS I never said I agreed to free college for illegal immigrants (I don’t) I just mean taxes in general like for roads and water sanitation. @jas92395 жыл бұрын
Grace Vanderbilt that’s not the problem, you’re reading too much into it..if they continue to put taxes on us for things like what you just said you don’t agree with, then it becomes a problem..our taxes going to roads and things that make sense, I don’t think anyone has any real kind of problem with that..but at the end of the week when you get your check and you see how much came out of it, just to think the things they want to do means we’d be taking even more and more out, then it does become a problem..I’m not saying pay 0 taxes, I’m stating we can’t continue to tax every last thing..I’m not complaining about the taxes we pay, I’m saying once they realize the value of money and what our money goes to, they’ll realize we don’t need to be spending money on certain things like education for everyone

@Emeril Lugosi If you pay somebody $10 for their labor it's because they have agreed to accept $10 for that labor. That's called a voluntary transaction, not greed. After that, it's no concern of the original provider of that labor how much the buyer sells the results of that labor for. Another voluntary transaction takes place when the fruits of that labor are sold at a price the buyer agrees with. Nobody is being exploited and nobody is greedy just by the mere fact that a profit was made.

That’s a great quote, but I do think we could balance some of the greed in this country. I once saw some news report on businesses, and there was a bread company paying like 70-80k a year to workers. And the owner said he wanted his employees to be able to have decent lives, be able to raise their families. He said, I make a good living, how much money do I really need? More businesses having that attitude would certainly be beneficial for the country overall. With all the money Walmart makes, many of their employees receive government assistance. There are even signs up in the employee rooms on how to apply for the programs. It’s a vicious cycle, we get cheap crap, primarily made in China, and the employees work, yet still get food stamps to subsidize their salaries.
@christopherstigson63774 жыл бұрын
@Emeril Lugosi all companies work this way... my current company charges $80 an hour for my labor and i get $25, while costing $45 an hour for the company. They keep $35. And there are many people who do not earn any money for the company... you also want a car, insurance, laptop, tools, etc on the job. Not much left. Your labor costs money, try hiring a few people. Cost adds up fast.
