On this episode: It goes without saying that 2002 was a crazy year for the WWE. In this episode we discuss the first brand split fizzling, the way the boys felt about it, who created Katie Vick, how the funeral segment was shot, the fallout from the angle, why they got rid of the Intercontinental title, the Lennox Lewis vs. Brock Lesnar PPV, Undertaker missing a PPV main event, was Kevin Nash milking the quad injury, Stephanie discussing her sex life with Triple H on Howard Stern, Regal's rep as an office stooge, Terry Taylor coming back in for the 917th time, heat with Test over not cutting his hair, how Nathan Jones got hired, what Vince thought of JR's BBQ sauce, when the company knew Edge was a top guy, when Bret and Vince started talking again, Vince being "hot and cold" with Mick Foley, how and why the Scott Steiner deal came together, the issue Linda McMahon had with Hogan's book, Hogan playing the WWE against AJPW in the middle of his book promotion, Jeff Hardy's "passion" for wrestling, the biggest gate in MSG history, the rumored Lesnar-Hogan main event for Survivor Series, the heat between Brock and Big Show, what the office thought of Chyna and Waltman getting engaged, why the WWE website pulled down Austin's merchandise, why they brought back the Big Gold Belt, who was for it and who was against it, why the company can't say the letters "WWF" in some old footage on the Network, a newspaper's behind the scene's look at a day at RAW, embezzlement at the WWF New York Club, Shane's role in the company, rumors that Shane and HHH don't get along, a theory of why Raven didn't get more of a push, HHH's political power, whether or not Steiner was a locker room cancer, how was Shawn in the locker room after his return, the expectations that Jeff Hardy will jump off of stuff, Bruce teaches Conrad about vomitoriums, the craziest opener in Survivor Series history, what made Angle great in backstage skits, why Kidman changed his look, how underrated Noble and Nidia were, who remembers the F-View camera angle, what kept the Lesnar/Show match short, one of the best matches you probably don't remember, what kept Chavo from being World Champion, what Vince thought of Chris Nowinski, Matt Hardy Version 1, why Steiner came in as a babyface, the WWE's relationship with Saliva, why Booker T had more success than other WCW transplants, Shawn's gear and haircut, the original plan for Shawn's return, RVD injuring HHH's throat, whether or not there was heat after the injury, the creation of the cell, who thought of it, who made it, what did the boys think of it, and did the company plan for this to be permanent gimmick match going forward? Yes, the Katie Vick angle was offensive, but what was really stupid about the whole thing was that Kane was supposed to be in hiding during his youth being a recluse, and now suddenly he has a girlfriend? Over on Smackdown Taker was being accused of having an affair with some woman. My biggest issue at this time was they were making the Brothers of Destruction look like Brandon and Dylan from 90210.

Listen. HHH beat undertaker the week before in a no.1 contenders match to face Brock. But steph steals brock from raw to smackdown exclusively. So if there is no champion to face and a new title is created, it only makes sense to give it to the number 1 contender,who has already won a match. Edit 3 years later: A match against the Undertaker no less, meaning that he was top of the pile when Brock and Taker went to smackdown.

I am a big fan of the show. I really enjoy talking a walk down memory lane with each different show. I can't exactly put my finger on the reason why but this episode is comedic gold! It's not unusual for me to get a real good laugh pretty often during any given episode but this one here at several different points had me laughing so hard I was simultaneously crying and fighting to catch my breath. I would absolutly love to hear an episode that would be a telephone interview between Bruce and Vince (as voiced by Bruce) in a Phil Hendrie type of way. Thanks for the laughs boys!

I’m a little confused. They keep saying that WWE is cutting back on their PPVs for cost cutting, but in 2002 they only aired 12 PPV. Not the 2/month that they suggest. Also, when talking about HHH/Kane unifying the IC Title, Bruce states that SD has the US title and Raw losing the IC title didn’t make sense, but the US title never returned until July 2003. The timeline seems off for the arguments trying to be made.

there were 14 ppvs in 2001, there were 15 in 2002 and then 13 in 2003.... Bruce probably got his 02 and 03 years mixed. When you write 20-odd years of PPVs, im sure a few things begin to run together in your memory.

Yeah Shane had no problem with the direction WWE was headed, that's why he left for 10 years and kept very little contact with his family, right? According to Bruce, nobody understands wrestling expect for Vince, Stephanie, and Triple H (the same people who have brought it to an all time low, mind you).. I mean Cornette, Scott Steiner, RVD, Kurt Angle, the New Age Outlaws, Chris Jericho, DDP, Goldberg, The Undertaker, and even his buddy Kevin Nash have acknowledged that Triple H was blatantly using backstage politics and his relationship to the McMahon's to bury guys (specifically WCW guys), but yeah what do they know about wrestling? They were never in the business apparently.

Conrad sounds like a concerned parent who just had his moral compass tuned through the whole Kane/HHH manakin discussion. It was weird, yea, but laugh man. I saw it when I was 12 and haven't thought about until hearing this segment. Bruce and him must be good friends off the air because Conrad tends to get passive aggressive, sassy, and judgmental pretty often about things. I'd get defensive at some of the stuff he says if the majority of my work was getting analyzed like this. (I'm referring to other podcasts than just this one.) Besides that it's a great show guys, keep it up!

Survivor Series 2002 was a very interesting pay per view in a very interesting year. My opinion on the Katie Vick situation, 2002 was a year they did and Vince approved crazy shit. Robert Scott Vick who was Sick Boy in WCW, he signed his deal in 1999 and they let him go in 2002. While that storyline was crazy as f, there was no real conclusion cause imo, he was let you. I would have loved to been in the arena to hear that Chris Jericho performance and how the hell they got it where you could hear it in the arena but the band was at The World.

WWE absolutely buried Booker T. There is no way in hell the WWE did anything good for Booker. WCW - Harlem Heat and even his solo efforts were fantastic. Comes over to WWE ... King Booker - Jobber for hire, it's like the WWE wanted to embarrass the now defunct WCW, but none of the WCW talent was around so they took the guy who just won the WCW Championship and make a fool out of him.

@justinjockisch4105
@justinjockisch4105 6 жыл бұрын
RAW was never aimed at children.. Their core audience was 18-35 and to this day children are their smallest audience. Just because there's been some hokey shit ruining the show for the last 12 years doesn't make it a kids show.. Anyone who wants to argue this can go look at the official audience chart released by WWE. Children are their smallest audience, catering to them is why their audience has shrunk as a whole.
@IAmNeomic
@IAmNeomic 6 жыл бұрын
The reason why WWE and many companies aim their product at children, despite the audience being different, is because children are more likely to want the shirts, the toys, the DVDs, the video games. They will beg their parents to go to the shows, to buy them the merchandise. They will beg for things at for their birthday, for Christmas. If they can get a kid to beg his family to go, they're more than likely selling at least 2-3 tickets for the kid and his parent(s). Possibly more if there's more than one child. Kids and their parents are your money makers. Adults are more conscious about the things they buy because they have a different concept of money than kids do. Adults will maybe buy a shirt here and there, maybe a DVD, maybe a Network sub. Unless you're part of the tiny, niche group that collects merch from that brand (WWE in this case), you're probably not gonna be buying all the DVDs, the toys, the plastic belts, the ring playsets, the Halloween masks, etc.
@justinjockisch4105
@justinjockisch4105 6 жыл бұрын
Brightside: Not when the product is driving off your audience. The late 90's and early 2000's wasn't aimed at children and it blew today's product away in terms of profitability (that's why they brag about revenue and not profit).. Massacring your core audience to sell more toys is a borderline retarded business move. It makes no sense if they planed on surviving long term. Which most people were saying 10 years ago, and they are now feeling the effects of... If you have an audience of 7 million (2002) and 40% of your audience is buying merch, then you drive your audience down to 3 million people (today's audience) and sell to literally 100% of the audience (just to humor this argument), you are still selling less merchandise. It doesn't matter WHO is buying the merch. It matters HOW MANY are buying your merch... I hate to burst people's bubbles, but there were far more toys and t-shirts being sold in the Stone Cold days than there were in the John Cena days. The percentage of fans buying merch and the revenue is completely irrelevant when the audience is a fraction of the size and they aren't actually making much profit... The WWE likes to play spin doctor with the numbers, but anyone with the slightest grasp of how business works would avoid buying WWE stock like the plague. Don't let those HD lights fool you, the WWE is not doing well in terms of profit. Anyone who thinks that driving away 7 million viewers since 1999 was some how a smart business move, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you. That's not how television works. Unless WWE pulls their shit together, Fox is really going to regret offering a billion dollars for a television show that only pulls 2.7 million viewers. I expect Smackdown to soar past RAW in the near future. That's their best shot at making money. Not this garbage dying product that's currently draining veiwership. There's no money in losing fans. I don't care how many toys the kids are buying. 7 million people buying $60 PPV's every month back in the day made them far more money than John Cena or Roman Reigns toys. Trust me.

When was WWE doing 2 PPV's a month in 2002? They didn't even go to Brand exclusive PPVs until 2003, with the exception of the UK PPVs

Just finished this episode and got to hear Conrad making his annoying kissing noises meanwhile Bruce wouldn’t attack Conrad on who Conrad won’t talk bad about. Conrad says “we all have different allegiances and mine might be a bit different than yours” smh. Bruce might have some sort of biased or slight allegiance to Triple H sometimes, whereas Conrad DEFINITELY ALWAYS has allegiances towards Dave Meltzer and his gossip column, along with other dirt sheet writers. Not surprising that he always defends other wrestling nerds who all have a couple things in common with him. They’re fanboys who’ve never been in the business, yet act/claim they know what’s “really going on” because they read some stuff or talked to people who claim to know or know someone who does 😂. Sucks that the worst part of Conrad podcasts are so often Conrad himself. So often killing the vibe by acting like a prosecuting attorney working off “facts” he got from gossip columnists that just like himself…weren’t there for ANY of the stuff they talk about.

Top three worst scripted moments I can recall in the 16 years I've watched pro wrestling would be: 3: TNA reverse battle royal 2: HHH/Vick segment ties with Russo winning the WCW World Title 1: A PWG 5 on 5 tag team match featuring the likes of Jushin Liger, Tommaso Ciampa, Chuck Taylor, Sami Solomon Crow, Pete Dunn (notably) in a gimmick where Tommaso was shoving his thumb up people's butts. Jushin had cheeks of steel and captured Ciampa's thumb with his buttcheeks and one by one; 1 guy from each team would shove their thumb up another guy's butt followed by another. More rediculousness ensued and it's on youtube if you ever wanna prove to somebody that wrestling is staged

Bruce Pritcher mentiions in a few podcasts how vince didnt push RVD because he didnt want to play any characters other than RVD. when i think about that, im like good or else they will saddle you with a dumb gimmick. have you noticed that the good company boys who just do what they are told always get teh dumb gimmicks or just job or generally have no direction. get dumb gimmicks or just job to the stars? the Big Show comes to mind when i think of this

This is something that Eric Bischoff has brought up and I’ve wondered about and pointed out as well. EVERYONE knows wrestling isn’t real, the men and women in it are not real fighters actually competing for anything. They are essentially actors and actresses doing athletic combat theater, it’s like a soap opera with fighting. So with that being said, why is it totally fine for a show like the Sopranos, The Shield, Sons of Anarchy, and every other show to have racist, sexist, homophobic, and/over the top evil characters but wrestling promotions like the WWE or WCW get called out and publicly destroyed every time they are deemed to be too “offensive” to any group? It’s hypocritical and a huge double standard. Wrestling isn’t real, it’s entertainment and therefore should be allowed to have wrestlers or tv personalities who are racist, or homophobic, or anything else that’s not ok to be. If anything, it would give them the same opportunity stuff like that gives every other show or movie….to mirror the real world we live in and give them the ability to have more drama based on reality. Just like other shows or movies they could teach lessons and show character development through their stories by having people overcome the bad stuff or having others change to become better humans. That’s what happens in real life, so why not be allowed to portray that?
