5 掛ける 2 を、 5 multiply by 2 ってアメリカの小学校で習ってた。 multiplied by だったかもしれない。w

An interesting topic! Many native speakers also use 'is' instead of 'equals.' It's more of a relaxed way of saying it. Also sometimes people will say 'multiplied' instead of 'times.' 👍

I remembered saying "is" at an American school😀 Thanks!
equals の s は単純に「3単元のs」ですね^^。2+1は3「に等しい/と等しくなる」、っていう動詞としてのequalなので。アイクが「文の最後に来るときはsがいらない」って言ってた例は、形容詞のequal で、XとYは等しい、って使い方ですね。ホント、こういう算数の英語とかって、日本人にとっては習う機会がなくて盲点だと思います。

私も疑問に思って調べたら「2+1」を一つの名詞として扱うので単数扱いということなんですね。

そうそう、だから動詞を使わない場合は、two plus one "is equal to" threeと言っちゃっても大丈夫
Sorry but as a grammar teacher I have to point this out:) "X and Y is equal" as he said is actually grammatically incorrect and you should say "X and Y are equal" because the subject X and Y is plural. For "X plus Y equals Z," the "equal" is used as a verb and X with an addition of Y is considered singular. That is why it needs an "s" after equal.
X=Y X is Y X equals Y X is equal to Y X+Y X plus Y X-Y X minus Y X×Y X times Y X multipled byY X÷Y X divided by Y 分数 1/◯ one half,one third , one fourth and so on. ◯/□ for instance, two thirds four fifths etc. X^Y for example, X squared,X cubed, X exponent four,X to the fourth power ….
