Having owned a GC8 WRX for the last 5 years I will say they are definitley worth buying while they are still around. They are SUPER light weight compared to modern turbo saloons. You just cannot find a 4 door, AWD turbo car less than 1250kg these days, more like 1600-1800kg now. So even with 250-280bhp they feel like a 350bhp modern car.

@@MacSalad__ if i were you the number one thing is that it's been carefully maintained bc at almost 30 years old it will be a headache otherwise, unless you're in for a big project. you'll find that some of these are the most clapped cars somehow still on the road & just abused at every opportunity. check anything rubber for any cracking, all the hoses, shifter bushing, suspension parts. see if the fluids are clean and at the correct levels to get an idea of how it was treated. start it cold & make sure it fully warms up to 180 while testing. of course do the usual turbo checking, fluids, get the codes read to make sure they weren't cleared. be wary of performance mods especially the poverty goofball ones like intakes. wouldn't buy one of these to save money, go into it fully expecting it to be an ongoing maintenance project. if it feels like it was loved and you were down to keep that up i'd go for it. the way a lot of these are treated it wouldn't be a bad idea to buy a blown one and replace the drivetrain yourself for the peace of mind.

Good vid, would also add that the centre dash lid is prone to cracking and isn’t cheap to replace (around $300 AUD if you can find one), and parts are keeping up there. I own 2 GC8s and you can’t just duck down to the wreckers anymore to pick up parts readily like you could maybe 5 years ago. It’s a good idea if you do go with the GC8 to get to know your local Subaru or GC8 specialist wreckers and tuners as they can normally point you in the right direction. It definitely does feel like the cult of Subaru sometimes with how enthusiastic people are with these cars :)

I have one and the MAF (Mass air flow) Sensor is also one thing not to cheap out on. For my model a 1998 one (The one with unpainted door handles) it costed a whopping 455 euros just for the part. The other Gc8 models probably have one that cost about 199 or something. In both cases failure of a MAF sensor can make the car run lean (With no prior signs) and only way you find out without an aftermarket sensor is when your on the side of the road with a hole in your piston. So in a way i don't agree with the holes in the dash because if there is an air fuel ratio sensor on there you should buy it instead of walking away. And there is one more reason to why they disappear and that is rust. Otherwise lovely car it stole my heart when i sat in the passenger seat even.

Still has the ALK, strut brace, sway bar and Apexi Power Intake that I put in it. The first drive home brought all the memories flooding back about just how capable these things are even in fairly stock form. Have a few jobs to do on it, fix the mirror switch that doesn’t work, find new remotes, install new head unit, remove the disconnected boot cd 12 stacker that I put in it in 2001, attend to the low fuel light that’s not working and get a new pod filter on it. I'm up to my 6th gc8 wrx/sti variant. Personally, I've been fortunate enough to have owned many 90's Jap performance cars (R32 GTR skylines, evo, mx5, silvias, etc). The one endearing aspect (for Australian) gc8 wrx owners - is that these were locally delivered, modified and tuned since 1993/4. Subaru have been here since the 70/80s. We're fortunate to have a strong second hand and after market support for these cars. They're like lego. You can literally retro fit a 2015 gearbox into a 1999 gc8 and it'll run like factory. Either way. It's a 90s Jap car from a golden era of fast cars, boost and flat out driving.

ah, is that why most of the old restored/modded ones have the 6speed instead of the 5speed? Is the 6speed MT more reliable than the 5speed? I know with the Evo's, its the exact opposite where their 6speed's are made of wet paper and can't add too much horsepower or boost on it. I've only ever tried stock Wrx's, so i wouldnt know how the modded tuned would go.

I always wanted 1, even now I still do. But I drove an 04 Forester XT and was a little disappointed with it. Felt it lacked personality and engine seemed a bit boring in anything other than mid range. Still I am keen to drive a GC8 just to see what they are like and I like the GF8 wagons also.

It's kind of both to me. I think it's a great car for what it is - like most memorable old cars. It's definitely a great time capsule - being that it is a late 90s car, it's one of the last performance sedans that offer a close to pure analog driving experience. However, it is often romanticized and some people tend to think it is better than it really is.
@roboticunclephil Жыл бұрын
nah i straight up don't feel like they make cars that FEEL like this anymore. it's the weight i think and the separation of the driver from the road, modern cars are just encumbered with crap and road-separation-comfort-technology. even a 90s corolla/civic feels great to just whip around a bit no power needed. get a japanese 90s car while you still can!

I sat passenger in one when I was about 13 and watched my sisters boyfriend at the time absolutely destroy a bmw m3 on the corners with ease first sharp s road and the bmw was gone. Grew up watching Colin McRae show what the Subaru was all about. I think some of the things said in this video are kinda mehhhh. The Subaru was never ment to be a long distance family car so things like cup holders and seat pouches etc just wasn’t what anyone wanted one for lol. Subaru thrown the inside together just to get them into rally’s. Wasn’t until the facelift classic that they started to put a couple little things here and there in the inside, I own a 1997 Impreza turbo saloon and the inside has next to nothing for storage other than the glovebox but I genuinely couldn’t care less lol. Untill you drive a Subaru Impreza for yourself you truly never understand what they make you feel. Every pull brings out a smile. The sound is absolutely iconic. If you ain’t a car person then it’s probs not your cup of tea. It’s a car for the true drivers the true petrol heads not the Tesla lovers or heavy assisted drivers with all your different driving assists of today’s cars. You’re in control when you drive one of these and that’s what makes them special.
