Shaqayeq Mirza Ok, so, born in a small town in Romania, 0 opportunities, poor, dysfunctional family with always drunk step-dad(s) with beatings and all that package that comes with that. Self thought myself english and other fields since i was young, education is broken in Romania and i had to learn on my own a lot of thing but it was easier with internet after learning English. Made very good friends who helped me get away from all the problems at home. Later got into economics, finished college this year (~10% of children from here do) and going to start my own business next year. The story is a lot longer with losing the house, beating my step-dad to keep him from beating mom but it's a 10-page essay and i won't spill it here.

I love learning. I love being smart. I dream of one day being that old wise man who lives peacefully alone, reading and writing books. But, currently, I just cannot get on board with the school system. I have pushed myself to get As and it never pays off in the end and I'm often plagued with mental health issues. I excel in creative writing assignments, but my teachers mark me down because it never correlates with what they asked for. They say, 'it really is amazing writing you have here, but you completely missed the topic.' And I respond angrily, 'I didn't write it to please you.' Why do we need grades to justify our intelligence? It's so wrong!

@wildcard89248 жыл бұрын
+TarlanT "overall how to study/learn." I disagree. I think it's actually the reverse. I was taught a particular religion before I was introduced to philosophy and critical thinking in college. *I was fed "truths" before I was asked to question them. I was ordered to memorize symbols in math until I was taught logic and how to prove math expressions. *I was RAISED to use math before I was asked to question them. it's actually the reverse. everything is applied until you're OLD enough to question it.

+Wild Card For a teacher, there is always a trade-off between going deep or going broad. In high schools they mostly go broad. With almost no logical/mathematical proofs of every formula they teach. Imagine if teacher would introduce to an average kid, who will never become a scientist, 5 different proofs of Pythagorean theorem. Logical reconciliation and proofs start to come in College.

School also kills creativity. I was the most creative student in elementary school cause I got complimented a lot and I was sometimes impressed by my own ideas. At the end of college, I realized that I've mostly lost the ability to create anything, nothing I do impresses me anymore. Sure, I write good papers and I get good grades, but it feels like everyone else is doing just as well if not better. The creative side of me was what made me special and unique, and school has completely killed it. Now I am just one of the way too many identical people with the identical (if not worse) qualification with the identical goal in life. School is basically a life-factory, making everyone the same since forever.

In college i was doing better but it was still very average. I applied to my first job at a cafe when i was in my third year and I was just expecting to be a waitress or kitchen staff, thats all i was looking for. But the two ladies offered for me to be an assistant and manage their social media account because i seemed so good at communicating and I was artistically inclined (something that wasn't very appreciated as a kid). I agree so much with this! I did extremely well in school - in Germany and in the US. I earned the best possible score and had a teacher say, that in his 30 years of teaching he never read a better final essay than mine. Instead of picking the top university and studying medicine, I chose to go into a creative field and the first thing that happend... I did a 4 week homework and a test for entering that university. And my perfect grades, that I had worked on 3 years, were replaced with my score on this homework and test - which were way worse than what I had from school. Of course it made sense. The university wanted creative and artistically capable people, not learned people. And then I was an average and finally bad student at the university. While I am a creative person, I tried to please my teacher/professors, who did not give two flying pants about being pleased. University was way more anonymous. This was before Bachelor degrees came along. My studies were supposed to be finished within 9 semesters. The average at my university was 14, which i scoffed at at the beginning. (most people had jobs + kids and... i later learnt that it was impossible to finish in 9 semesters anyway due to scheduling classes at the same time). It took me 16 semesters! 16! And therapy. And part of that was not being able to do simple bureaucratic things. Like getting signatures from professors who themselves did not have set days when they would be on campus and sometimes flatout refused to grade papers. "Not now, I don't have time. (3 years after I had taken the test that i desperately needed a grade on to sign up for my final test at university. Was this legal on the professor's part? Of course not, but... he's grading me! I finally pestered this professor so much that he gave me the worst grade of the class. My work wasn't as good, but that grade...well...) I was living in an ivory tower of achievable tiny goals and tiny steps that were laid out perfectly for the way I think in school. But university isn't just education, it also includes life skills that I lacked. After turning my life around, I passed university, I am happily married for several years and I work in a job I love. I will be poor my whole life (compared to other people who graduated with me! In my country being poor is insanely rich compared to other countries. I am aware of that.), since I am very bad at negotiating with clients and the whole money part of my job
@cesarebachelli8 жыл бұрын
All those things u have mentioned in the end (i.e. classes on dealing with crises, etc.), I have learnt mostly from having conversations with people around me, from books, or from the internet. And it is a lifelong learning matter. Social skills like how to deal with relationships are very complex and intricate, with varied solutions. I think the closest the school can offer is Psychological Studies,. But, we would still have to learn it ourselves through our own experiences, better yet from others' experiences. And part about surviving university is again about gauging information from people around us, or even from the internet. Basically, I just want to say information is literally at our fingertips these days, keep searching and keep learning. Some things are just a matter of learning from experiences and school may not be able to provide all.

Andrew Taylor I actually disagree. My uncle who has been arrested, had addiction problems, and didn't graduate high school. He is now making over 85,000 yearly as an electrical engineer. Yes, I'm shocked too! School is not a necessity and it shouldn't altar your success in your adult hood. it's funny how if I say I'm not attending college, I'm belittled by my fellow classmates who say "You're going to live in a dumpster!" Or "You're not gonna have a life". Ever since I was little my mind was embedded with college college, grades, and more college. Feels as if I'm stuck in a system that I can't get out of. College may make things easier, but it does not PROMISE your success, no matter how hard you work or study. Its simply a system that tests your work ethnic, but why should our grades be the one to show our ability? Whether you go to college or you don't, have bad grades or a disability, I believe you should strive for what you want to do, you don't NEED school to live a happy life.

Andrew Taylor I'm sorry did you not use anecdotic evidence too? You didn't use evidence either, just simply stated what YOU think is the best, not the truth. His position is to manufactur chips for devices and implant them, does he really need four years of college to achieve this? Lol or did you expect that all people who don't attend college work at their local fast food restaurant? You say I didn't "prove" anything, but my uncle and everyone else who has been able to require such a high paying job or a job they adore without college is a perfect example to go against your statements.

Deadass can't say enough how much this vid resonated with me. I grew up in an environment where, over and over, I'd be told the same thing: 'You work hard in school, you get a good job, you make good money and then you have a happy life.' So, naturally, being an extremely naive 15 year old, I jumped to the conclusion that my world stopped at textbooks and report cards; that if I got into uni, everything would magically fall into place. Fast forward to 2 years later. At the tender age of 17, I left high school with 4 As and came to Edinburgh University to study French and Spanish with Chinese as a side subject. I came into uni thinking I was pretty much set for life. Only now did it hit me; no one gave two double fucks what I got in my exams. Made sense tbh. We were all attending the same school, we were all obviously smart enough to get in, so we were all the same. As a matter of fact, all of the people around me had way more to boast about outside of their SQA's, GCSE, SATs, etc. They managed to be hot, popular, well-traveled, interesting AND educated at the same time. It was then that I realized my grades could only get me so far. They mattered in terms of GETTING into uni but, unfortunately, my high school never prepared me for what was after that finish line. Suffice to say, things have gotten a lot better for me now. I took a gap year in 2016, wherein I got to enjoy all the experiences I had missed out on in uni; learning new skills, making new friends, sowing some wild oats, joining clubs. I even managed to discover my true passion for film making. I'm giving it another go next month at Queen Margaret University. Hopefully, I should know what to do right this time. As much as I learnt from that experience, I still feel that had I seen this video back in my senior year, it would've saved me from a buttload of trouble and a fucktonne of disappointment. *Update, November 12 2017: The course at QMU was trash. It was really dry and theory-heavy. Got depressed af and now my studies have been differed pending a mental assessment in January 2018. Idgaf tho. This is gonna be the third and final time I bother with university. After the assessment, I'm just gonna hit the bricks and do what I do best; making movies, making contacts and building up my production company- which has just secured a third client. *Update April 12th 2018: Decided I'd be better off doing the whole filmmaking thing as just a hobby. Atm, I've just secured a high-paid internship with the council, working in their museums sector. The historic element of the museums sector still vaguely pertains to my flair for storytelling anyway. So, basically I'm in the perfect position.

I am a high school Special Ed teacher and the demands on me are very high. I believe we should have more courses that teach soft skills, financial literacy and relationship success etc. However, perhaps other adults such as parents should be also concerned with the well rounded education of their child. Parents can model many different life skills and expose their children to cultural activities that will enrich their lives. I afford my students the experiences of watching TED talks, School of life, moving orators and alternative music but there are only so many hours in a day within a system that frowns on authenticity. There are many educators working to change the system from the inside out.

its hard being a cool kid at school, coasting through grades and thinking you have it made then life hits and you realize that its not about memorization and regurgitation in the jungle. That Ferrari you envisioned at graduation starts to fade further and further away. You don't even know how you will afford a good used car let alone. You start to ignore beautiful girls because you feel like you have nothing to offer them. Thus you're likely to be single for the foreseeable future or you will just settle with an average girl/guy just to not be alone and to stop the questions of marriage from old folk. Your life is boring & routine so you find escape in series and watching braver men/women in sports secretly wishing that was you. You're essentially directed on what to wear and how to cut your hair everyday. You've lost your identity. and old people keep expecting huge things from you because you 'graduated college'...yay. All the while your old high school classmate who just about graduated high school owns life because maybe they were single minded about a passion/talent they had so they spent every minute working on it. They are extroverted and people gravitate towards them unlike you. They were always braver than you, and they were always natural leaders even though their grades were poor. They share their high quality of life on instagram and facebook, people admire their every post and you feel like you could die inside. Material well-being not necessary leads to a successful and happy life. Money is just an another challenge of life that could leave you in a pit of psychological and spiritual suffering. Some people complete this challenge, some - not. Not everyone will succeed in taking responsibility that great wealth brings. Moreover, men shouldn't feel like they have to offer something for a girl. Especially if it's related to money. Relationships should be built by the psychological connection. It's not recommended to "buy" a woman. Also your opportunities to learn and grow doesn't end with a graduation from school or university... Internet provides us with many source of information so educational institutions loses their significance. Finally, act of sharing personal life or achievements on instagram and facebook just emphasizes the need for admiration as well as acceptance... I doubt that person that live fulfilling life is marked by such narcissistic qualities... Those capitalistic concepts of success are concentrated to physical things only...

As for the comparison to others, it's hard to be avoided, unfortunately, but you can make it. Transform yourself into the reference system that you pries (values, goals, health etc.) and not other people. Focus inward, not outward. As just as a last piece of advice, don't choose social media as your source of information about other people's life quality. Show compassion and understating to yourself and others around you. Practice the concept of self-love in tough times and practice confidence in your achievements. And hey, laugh it off, when possible. Nothing is as serious as it seems.

They suck up to her all the time, and she loves them for it, they maintain top grades and all. But the question is, will they really be able to perform very well as a doctor or researcher?
@ecos8898 жыл бұрын
I keep failing in education. But that does not necessitate to me not doing well. I for instance have managed to find lab work just through asking different professors about the work they do and if I can help doing it. From that I have managed to move up into research despite my below par degree grade of 2:2 So with the education do not think that it is just this straight line, for many its a very wobbly line. Also many employers want experience and value that much more that a degree. For instance if you where taking an apprenticeship in lab work then moved up through the laboratory system you can start getting a degree if you really want them a decade on when you are most knowelable and have a solid working knowledge of how science works in the real world. With the apprenticeship route I know of many people in my family managing to find work that they love. :) So it depends in what you wanna do and if you feel you are not academic enough follow an apprenticeship and eventually get a degree if you feel like you want one, but if you love the position it gets you keep following that. :)

A lot of people in western countries haven't finished school yet they are highly respected and highly successful. They own large companies and have millions of dollars in investments. In my opinion to be successful like these people just work towards what you like or are talented at try and achieve your Ultimate goal. This will be a hard, irritating or dangerous journey but keep going in spite of that. You might not be successful, wealthy or well known towards the end of that journey but you sure will be fulfilled. I'm not speaking from experience and I'm definitely not an expert on this but this will get you somewhere till you realise what it is you must do. Try reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho its a really interesting story with a philosophy based on this direction.

In Poland we used to have letter grades in grades 1 to 3 (from E to A!) but later we had different teachers and we used a different system: everything was graded using points, then at the end of each half-year, we averaged the points for each subject to create percentages which are transformed like this: 95-100% - 6 86-94% - 5 72-85% - 4 48-71% - 3 20-47% - 2 0-19% - 1 After a year, both half-year percentages are averaged, then converted to 1-6. Then the average of all 1-6 scores is calculated.

When I was eleven, my English teacher gave my class an assignment. The assignment was, everyone had to make up- what they believed was- the perfect school/ school system. Then, we all had to write a paper and read it to the class aloud. I got a B-. My Paper: At the beginning every school year, students would take a personality test. Based off of the test, a system decides what jobs they would be best at, and what jobs they'd be the worst at. Then, students take a test to see what jobs they'd enjoy the most. Then, the job that fits into both categories best, would be the best job for that person. After they find the best job for them, students could choose what classes to attend, based off of the job.

I agree, that would make a great video. I've presented my opinion on being inwardly, positively rebellious, replying to another comment. Let me cite myself: "It's not doing whatever you want and defying everything that doesn't suit your current worldview. Living in a society does require you to keep to some rules, like laws (those that make sense at least), morality, ethics and it requires you to make some kind of contribution to it. Sadly, in order for our current system to work, most people have no other choice than to work boring, dull corporate jobs in order to sustain themselves and thus their imaginative, lively self slowly becomes drowned in the never ending, repetitive 9-5 corporate schedule. The way I see positive rebellion is to doubt everything, scrutinize everything, criticize what needs to be criticized even when the authorities tell you otherwise, be yourself and don't conform to every petty norm that our society has set for us (beauty standards, trends, etc.). You have no other choice than to play by the current rules of the game if you want to survive, but you've only lost the battle to do what makes you happy in life when you've given up. Do whatever society tells you to do, given your current situation, in order to sustain a good position within the society, but at the same time work towards what makes you truly happy. You were dealt the cards you were in life, you can't change that. For some they're worse, for some they're better. You can however decide how and when you play them. If you keep playing them right, sooner or later you'll get dealt a hand you were wishing for all your life."

Thank god school is over, i was getting REALLY sick of all that bullshit. In my last years I just didn't have the patience and energy to pay attention, do homework or care at all... I still ended up having decent grades, but I went from "nerd of the class" with straight 10 to "pretty good but average" with 7-8. I didn't really care, but it was annoying as fuck to hear "I expected more from you." from teachers, classmates, my parents and relatives...
@chrisg49978 жыл бұрын
Truth is you don't need college and most of what high school teaches you so don't worry, we were taught that if you don't get "A"s you won't amount to much, but this is far from the truth, you can create your own projects or teach yourself education rather than you paying someone to teach you useless bullshit

The mental gimp Oh and i had pretty bad teachers in school, most kids had to get extra classes in private to get decent results in the final exam... Keno, I see that we meet again. :D. But being obedient outside does have a lot of positive outcomes. How would it look if your doctor is rebellious? They just decided to give you the wrong medication just because they felt like it. To some degree do have some rebellious every now and then but going full of anything (both obedience and rebellious) will result in your downfall. "Starting to participating" in rebellious acts (like criminal schemes and drugs) will most likely lead you to an early death if you don't think about the TRUE consequences. Just my thoughts :D.

Today students are often evaluated by multiple-choice-tests... Teacher: 'How does it work?' Student: 'Don't know, but according to the book, answer 'B' is correct...' Some (but too few) teachers take a different aproach: Teacher: 'Well memorized, but now explain it WITH YOUR OWN WORDS...!' ;-P Student: '...ähhhh...???' (no clue)
@BigHenFor8 жыл бұрын
+Danger King If you can't teach something you've learned to someone else then you really haven't learned it. That's why multiple choice tests are only used to test what Information you've acquired about a subject, and essays are used to test what Knowledge (=the extent you understand how the information is useful) you have about a subject. Unfortunately, essays give a better picture of a student's ability than multiple choice tests, and have greater weight in marks awarded. So despite your fears, learn how to write good essays. Practise being clear, structured, and concise in your writing. It's a skill that can make or break a career.
@mac57948 жыл бұрын
+Danger King agreed 👍 I mean there must be a way around these formats because a 8-12 yr old is not going to decide what is good for his/her career it's a later part if your life just a gist of it(what is being taught) is necessary
@BigHenFor8 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. You prefer multiple choice so, how can multiple choice help you communicate that brilliant business plan to a bunch of investors who don't want to read it, but hear you tell it? Essay writing teaches you to structure your thoughts so that you can get your message across. That skill carries across to your spoken communication, and you will be more convincing and persuasive. Think about it. (You could even be writing books instead of just reading them.)
@neonbarnowl8 жыл бұрын
+Danger King I know this was only a tiny part of your comment so I'll start by saying I agree with everything else you said but disagree that knowing mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell is useless. In the US we're seeing an increase of people who aren't vaccinating their kids or themselves, while knowing simple/complex biology won't land you a job it can help people get a better understanding of how these medicines etc. work. Knowing this kind of information has a use outside of jobs, it's still important I think.
@BigHenFor8 жыл бұрын
Danger King It depends on the context doesn't it? And as humans are lousy at foretelling the future, no-one knows for sure when some piece of knowledge may finally pay dividends and be useful. Especially as the Lifetime Salaried Job is almost gone. With the up and coming economic and demographic trends outlining the care of the elderly becoming predominant as the Baby Boomers hit 70 over the next few years, research into counteracting the diseases of aging may just need someone who's hot on mitochondrial physiology!

yes but I think it's because you have to separate between different kinds of intelligence. The kinds of smarts that are required in school are not always easy to display outside of school. My weaknesses are a poor memory in certain areas such as numbers or personal events or locations while I have very good memory when it comes to movies or texts. If we can learn our strenghts and weaknesses we wont be fooled to believe that we are generally stupid, only in certain areas. Don't think that school smarts don't matter because they do, it's just that they have their place and are not applicable to every aspect of life.

i noticed that in school, some of my classmates are having a hard time with critical thinking. they always have to be spoon-fed information and cannot think deeply in order to solve a problem, because they believed there is only one way to solve that issue. good grades don't come from knowledge, it comes from the ability to memorize specific information and how tactical you are at taking standardized tests.

for people saying they get good grades so they are fucked, youre not, you can keep what you are doing and get good grades, even become a doctor or lawyer if you want, the point of this video is not to discourage those who are doing good, rather educate society on the a fact that needed to be brought to light since 999 B.C. I will say that I realized this in 5th grade that I didnt want to be a doctor or lawyer or office person or whatever, so I just took school lightly (I mean I still get A's cause school's easy for me) but this world cant just run on 100000000 entrepreneurs and if you are an A student it doesnt mean youre fucked, just dont be afraid to stand up and do what you feel is right even if others think its wrong. That is something I learned at the age of 10, thank god lol Im 17 right now, Im just waiting til Im older, I told my parents Im going to college but truth is, Im going to leave college right away to start living my life the way I want to, but dont tell my parents or they will scold me for being a disobedient dog ;)

I excelled at school in particular subjects - Business Math, Statistics, Economics and Algebra. I failed at Physics, Science, Trigonometry, History, Chemistry, etc. you know why? In school, our teachers taught us about `what`, `when`, `where` and `how` without knowing `why` we are doing that? I'm good at subjects that I can apply in a real situation. An A grade isn't really the basis of intellect so having a fail grades doesn't matter to me at all times. Most of my colleagues who were graduated with honors were just ended up working in a company instead of creating their own company. Sad to hear that our school system didn't teach its students about innovation. I had this experienced in an Algebra exam which I formulated another solution for a given problem aside from the traditional formula we used. I got the correct answer but my teacher marked my solution wrong, she couldn't understand what I did, of how I ended up with the answer. I told her that in real world, same problems have many different solutions. School doesn't accept innovation and creativity, that's why majority of the students are ended up working with a boss after they had graduated.

I having this aching feeling that this might happen to me... I've always been good at school, but I'm 19 now and I've never had a job in my life... I don't even know exactly what I want to be when I grow up. I think about it every night and it's hard to sleep.

i'm 19 too. failing so hard at the normal people's life. had 2 office-like jobs, didn't stood for more than 1 week in neither of them. cause i know that shit ain't for me. University either, i'm going to my last trial (exam to get in) tomorrow, philosophy test, i need 90 points out of 100, i'll prolly fuck up again, but i won't give up now. but i have a feeling that i'm getting close to finding my way, while feeling really far from the real world tho. i'm really good at signing and writing(songs and such), drawing, and i have lots of knowledge in life just at 19... guess its from past lives. anyway, we'll better keep fighting brother, i have the feeling that being like this at my 19 makes me a fkn looser, but i know we can turn this shit around. something may be waiting for us to make a move

Emilio M. M. I'm also 19 and feel really lost in the world. I dont have much to say cause im socially awkward and dont usually reply to posts. All i can say is most times when you feel like this we are much more closer than we think to the answer. Like you wrote, something may just be waiting for us. We just gotta keep searching. I know we're closer than we think.

we blame the school, but the system after the school is messed up. the school is based on a meritorious system, but in real life we must face the anomalies of the system: connections, bribery etc. We know very well the feeling after that interview when we didn't have the right references... or better said: connections.

Have time for Christ? Ephesians 6:10-18 says, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. The bible is no old book. You have to really let Christ open your eyes; to see the world in shambles. Many people say it's a religion to lock up people in chains, and say it's a rule book.. why? Because people hate hearing the truth, it hurts their flesh, it's hurts their pride, it's exposes on what things have they done..people love this world so much, s*x, money, power, women, supercars.. things of this world. Still trying to find something that can fill that emptiness in your heart. You can't find that in this world.. only in Christ, the bible is no chains, it's a chainbreaker. Breaking your sins into pieces... Repent now, and turn back to the true Lord only.. God bless. ❤

but when you think about it, why would schools teach students about relationships? isn't that the parents' job? We go to school to learn useless facts and socialize, but it's our parents who shape us into who we are today.

I'm 25, and I had an obsession for honor but when I was forced to stop university, I worked for 7 years. I learned that honors were nothing much compared to your actual work attitude and perseverance. My boss is an understanding guy and he values hard work and discipline. Most of the honor students who applied to him were rejected because they lacked interest and hard work.

Once you graduate, you realize that certain conversations are worth more than all of your college classes combined. Being in the company of certain people and learning from them can have a greater effect on your life than memorizing facts enough to pass a test. I wouldn't say degrees are totally useless but education still has a long way to go from hypotheticals to practical real-life skills that can actually make you successful.

As a 17 years old I think our education systems are just preparing us for a rat race. I never really learn anything in school that would give me anything except financial surety to some extent. I'm just about to step into a completely foreign domain without having textbooks for help or having a 'formula' to clear an exam. Why do I even learn about Young's double slit experiment? Is it gonna help me cook? I ace my classes no problem but I can say, without a doubt, that for the coming years I'm fucked. Well everyone is.
@kodomochan327 жыл бұрын
I'm also 17. I ace my classes but I can definitely say that I'm fucked up as well. I envy some of my classmates who are employed as restaurant servants right now because they're legitimately earning money at an early age whilst I depend on my parents for "financial assistance". :( I want to earn money of my own and not descended from people who have worked hard for theirs.

School gave you nothing except the skills needed for financial surety? I mean... What is school supposed to give you? If cooking is the most important skill you're going to need, then I'm assuming you learnt Young's double slit experiment in a trade school, as you're studying to be a chef? What do you personally believe is the responsibility of your school versus your parents?

I'm 17 and I work at a club. Don't ask just know I do. Anyways I feel like school really should teach work ethic and how and when to stop working. And teaching us how to achieve what we want.

I'm an actor . We really didn't had anything related to media during our school , I mean who really has. I sucked at the performance arts and all the plays they stole from Shakespeare and recycled them again and again . They never even selected me . 9 years later I'm settled, popular , have loads of advertisements signed up as my work and earning more than even the director of those plays . And those actors are either still looking for suitable careers or most of them are customer care executives
