Search eccentric exercise on KZbin. It’s definitely a thing!
@alan30189 Жыл бұрын
You can do this on every exercise at the gym. One recommendation is to do the eccentric part about five times as long is the concentric part. So, you would do a bicep curl in maybe one to two seconds, and then lower the weight back down for the eccentric part, for 5 to 10 seconds.

Joe Weider of Gold's Gym used to call these "negatives". In other words, if you were doing a bench press, you would push the weight up, then take twice the amount of time to slowly lower the bar back to your chest. This wasn't popular with some of the "ego-driven" bodybuilders because in doing bench presses (or any other exercise), it would generally require using lighter weights or doing fewer repetitions. .
@bossdog14802 жыл бұрын
Having trained over 40 years, I would say the Doc's got half of the story. 😁 Actually the negative part of the lift is equally as important as the contraction. Most people rush through this part instead of taking advantage of it. That's why they don't get any benefit from it.
@cmk1964 Жыл бұрын
That’s what he was saying. The negative is the same as the eccentric.

Thanks. You explain the differences between concentric and eccentric for the arms very well. However, I couldn't follow what you meant for lower limbs as the examples were rushed, the pictures were small, and I couldn't understand which of the exercises were targeting which muscles. Slower please and better explanation for legs. Thankyou! 👍

Just do reverse of what you would otherwise do. Like you shoe most effort trying to get up from squat position right? Take 3 times longer coming down than getting up. Like take a long time while trying to sit down. Anything against gravity is eccentric.

As a lifelong lifter ('I'm 62, been lifting since I was 15), I find this very difficult to accept. The whole concept of the mind-muscle connection, time under tension and all the other techniques, practices, theories and research I've read over the decades would seem to counter this study in dramatic fashion. Who was their test group- beginners or advanced athletes? I dunno about this one, doc.

How does a person only "lower" the weight? Wouldn't a person have to lift it up first in order t lower it?.........so you're always doing BOTH.........which is what we've always done anyway. Unless he's talking about purposely going a lot slower on the way down?
