thinking of learning this song, and looking through the you tube guitar videos, all the different versions of summertime, and I came across this....stopped right away and said to myself, now this guy knows what he's doing. smooth. love it. fantastic. you don't just play a lot of fast notes, you really play with feeling, and you have just the right laid back, "I do this in my sleep" approach. you don't try too hard and ruin it. perfect.

Recently found your channel. Great rendition of this classic. I really like how you continue to revisit the original melody. Many Jazz players do not and it is hard to tell which song they are playing. I am not a Jazz traditionalist but instead a rock-n-roll listener. I like hearing the melody during the improvisation. Great job!

@AchimKohl-JazzGuitar10 жыл бұрын
thanks, it's a Gibson ES-137 Custom, it's not an archtop guitar, I changed the bridge with fine tuners. you can buy the complete transcription of this solo with backing track on my sheet music store.

Wow. Incredible playing. I'm trying to learn more scales because I'm a soloist in my school jazz band. What scales were you playing here, if you would be kind enough as to let me know. PS, your how to improvise videos are great and very helpful.
@AchimKohl-JazzGuitar9 жыл бұрын
DJ Shredd Productions Summertime is basically a D Minor Blues, you can play the D Minor Blues scale throughout the complete song. I've played also the D natural minor scale, the arpeggios and a lot of chromatic approach between the chord notes. look out for the dominant 7th chord A7 in measure #8, #14 and #16, there you can play the altered scale or (one of my favorite arpeggio) a diminished arpeggio (G, Bb, C#, E). more information about my style you will find in the transcription of my solo improvisation of this song. best regards from mainz, germany

Might I inquire as to how you're getting that sound? String type/gauge, amp & settings, other studio-type effects? Outstanding, as all of your videos are. I am working with a 137 custom and Fender Twin and just quite nail your sound. Thanks for the help.
@AchimKohl-JazzGuitar6 жыл бұрын
Hi Al, here is my gear list: Gibson ES-137 Custom, Pickups: Gibson Classic 57 Strings: Dr. Thomastik Bebop Strings 12 -- 50, medium string action (not too low!) Picks: Jim Dunlop Tortex Jazz III with a sharp tip I'm always using a little compressor, graphic EQ, and reverb, no amps for recordings, I play directly in my interface, that's all. But if you play with a Fender Twin you need a graphic EQ like MXR 6 or 10 band graphic EQ, you have to reduce the highs 2000 - 8000 khz about 2 db and cut the 16 000 khz. best regards from Mainz, Germany
