Super Mario RPG - Legend of Seven Stars {Final Boss} Smithy

Fighting Smithy with a painfully average team.

Final boss time and Smithy's first phase has one of my favorites music in the SNES library.
I went for this fight with Bowser and Mallow for the sake of a challenge and something different since nearly every other video I see has Geno/Toadstool, Geno/Bowser or Bowser/Toadstool but no love for Mallow.
The team is balanced but each character bends sharply to one specific type of damage; Bowser is a physical powerhouse and Mallow has powerful specials while Mario is a mixed bag. I have to juggle the healing duty between all characters depending on what Smithy does, especially on his second form.
I also avoid using overpowered stuff like Jinx Belt, Quartz Charm, Super Suit, or any of the two Lazy Shells since I want to show how dangerous Smithy actually is to the average player.
The first phase is all about handling Smelter and Shypers all while enduring Smithy's powerful attacks. While this is very easy to manage with Toadstool/Peach, and her extremely useful Group Hug special, without her everything changes as the battle can easily spiral out of control if you get a Sword Rain/Meteor Swarm combination as it's all but guaranteed this will KO Mario or Bowser unless they're at full HP.
Smelter will create up to two Shypers which can use Sword Rain, a powerful all party attack spell on its own. Combine with Smithy himself, who is no pushover, and his dangerous Meteor Swarm and you can easily get a party wipe if you let Smelter create two Shypers to help Smithy.
The second phase of the battle is where Mallow truly shines; he can dish heavy damage to two of Smithy's most annoying heads (Tank and Welder Mask) with Shocker and Snowy respectively. The chest head takes extra damage from Fire and the Mage head gets heavy damage from physical attacks.
My strategy to win here without Toadstool was to rely heavily on Megaelixirs and Kerokero Colas (bought at Tadpole Pond after helping Toadofsky with his compositions). While my stock of healing items is big this is a VERY expensive solution and much more cumbersome to do with Toadstool's Group Hug, besides far more limited stock of items forces me to play much more aggressively since once I run out of healing items I'm good as dead.

When I got to Smithy to face off for the finale, I went as Mario (obviously), Mallow and Geno. Started the adventure with those three teaming up from the Bowyer fight, gotta end the adventure with them.

Well yes and no. The game gives you A LOT of hidden accessories and items that break the game and make it easy as hell. Without them he's fairly challenging. With them and he's a joke.

If you don't have someone with really good magic defense, Wizard form *can* one round party wipe an unbuffed party. But you can boost your defenses. There's a reason he has Shredder.

What's disturbing about this fight is the fact that there are so many Smithys in the bottom of the base and judging by the dialogue from the "minions". It seems like they are the ones who built their own master or Smithy every single time.

I know this is an old comment, but Bowser is capable of changing his size. He’s tiny sometimes and massive sometimes. It’s not that far fetched when you consider mushrooms can make Mario grow pretty large

he's a giant. look at the parade at the end of the game. bowser in his clown car = ant compared to a giant smithy sitting in the flying blade. bowser could never have taken smithy alone, that's why he had to group up with everyone to take him down. the guy was an f'n beast and that makes him all the more epic.

I always leveled my characters to Level 30 before the Smithy encounter, and never skipped the Lazy Shell armor and weapon, so Smithy was never much of a challenge to me. I'll have to try beating the game without being overprepared one of these days, or try using a different team comp.

@@Dayserking just the hard mode rom hack. it's still easy, they actually ruined it with giving enemies dumb actions like weird mushroom instead of a modified mega recovery, plus the shypers don't use sword rain anymore, just heal.

I always have princess Peach in my teams, she is the best support and have a high damage, making her the perfect character, with the accessory that avoids fatal blows, you can resurrect you team as long you protect her

Once you have Peach, Pick me up item is rarely used except when peach falls in battle.

I had Lazy Shell with Jinx Belt or Attack Scarf on Mario (Hero Shirt for Armor obviously) since with all of that, he can rack up tons of damage with just Super Jump alone. Peach and Geno for healing and support are always gonna be the OP party.

Ghost icon probably means it can inflict Fear, which halves the damage you do.

It does different things to different characters at different times, depends what badges you have on. Turned me into a shroom once

Smithy's Treasure Box Head does the following: Shroom- Turns you into a Mushroom. Partially heal every turn but can't do anything. Scarecrow- Become a scarecrow. Can use Special and Defense. Can't attack or use Items. Mute - Causes Mute status on your party. Think Silence from Final Fantasy. Unable to use Special. Poison - Poisons your party. HP loss every turn. Fear - Cuts party's attack power and defense in half. Sleep - Puts party to sleep.

It’s quite simple, really. His plan to invade the Mushroom Kingdom with custom-made weapons and soldiers _failed_ because of Mario and Co. Now they’re invading _his_ world to stop him before he can create a new army from scratch. Also, he’s made of metal, and the place you fight him is _really, really hot._

If you just want to beat him to get the ending, just run one person with the lazy shell armor and the rare scarf. They will have the highest defense and magic defense and can ensure you don't die. If it's peach you definitely won't die as long as you keep your FP up

Nah, it's fairly straight foward and similar enough to Paper Mario 64, with some differences. The "Action Commands" are much simpler than 64's:Mario's abilities you either have to time them (for the jumps) or mash (for the fire), most of Geno's you just have to hold the button,etc.Although there's a mechanic for "perfect timing" in the regular attacks and blocks (with perfect attacks rewarding twice the damage and perfect blocks rewarding no damage taken) Instead of badges, you have a system of weapons,armor and accesories. And instead of a partner, you have a party of three. It might look too hard because this guy is using arguably the weakest party members.Geno is pretty strong and Peach is straight up overpowered. He's also a bit underleveled.

In the remake, Smithy feels downwoards after Culex is sitting at home! Then, Mario defeats Culex, and then turns 3D. Well, Smithy would underestimate him, and then end up getting totally through and would explode a lot of times! By the way, i am very good at defeating Smithy. I beat him seven times! I defeated Culex 3D and his Crystals eleven times. Maybe i underestimated both of them...

I mean Culex in 3D has 9999 HP and you have to defeat all his crystals or else the crystals revive him. Also he starts with Meteor which does your characters max HP -1 and has a timer between uses and will KO if party members are below max HP. Then when all the crystals are taken out, he spams Final Claw which does 9999 damage if not timed perfectly. Also the only way to not take the hit from Meteor is to use Spare us All Triple Move or use a Red Essence.
